Changing to iCloud sync

Hello,

I have a Mac running High Sierra (an old MacBook Air), iPhone running iOS 18.3.2 and iPad running iPadOS16.7.10 (an old iPad). I subscribe to iCloud where Money Dance is enabled. I'm running Money Dance version 2024.4 (5253).

I used to sync with DropBox but now want to sync to iCloud. When I try to sync with iCloud I just get a error sound and can't select ok. I've tried unsyncing, restarting Money Dance (which seems to stick). And restarting my Mac. However, it wont accept to sync with iCloud.

Do you have any ideas why it won't work?

Thank you
David

    Hi David,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

In order to sync using iCloud Drive Sync you need to ensure that:

    • the data file you wish to sync is stored in the default location on the computer where you set up the process. This is crucial!

    • Your devices are using the same iCloud account

    • It is not currently possible to sync to multiple iCloud accounts.

Then you should navigate to File->Syncing and turn sync off by choosing Don't Sync
(if you were using a different sync method previously, and restart Moneydance)

    • Navigate to File->Syncing and choose iCloud Drive

    • Set or take note of your existing "Passphrase".

On your mobile device/s you need to install the latest iOS mobile app.

Launch the mobile app and choose the same file as your computer.
Enter your Password to match the Passphrase on your computer.

Then, enter a "dummy"" transaction on each device and allow a few seconds for them to sync. They should display exactly the same transactions.

Finally it might be useful referring you to this Youtube video

Side note, I believe Stuart's suggestion might be useful as well.

You may want to open your System Preferences (not Moneydance's)

    • Click on Apple ID and select iCloud from the sidebar.

    • Ensure iCloud Drive is checked.

This procedure should help you be in control on which apps can store files in iCloud Drive, click on Options... next to it and allow Moneydance.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

Thank you for the suggestions Maddy and Stuart.

Sorry to say that I've done as described, but I still get the Mac "donk" for it not working when I try to set sync to iCloud. I've attached some screen captures to show various settings and and version numbers to make sure that they are ok.

I also created a new clean and fresh "personal account", by temporally renaming the original data file so that it couldn't be found. I also stopped my iPhone and iPad syncing to Moneydance so that they are showing the what to sync screen. And the new fresh personal account has the same problem with the Mac donk when I try to sycn with iCloud. Again I've attached that screen capture.

Finally, I've downloaded Tools extension, but that seems to tell me what I already know, there is no synchronisation set.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

I don't know the answer to this, but is it possible that High Sierra is too old a version with an icloud version that won't support what MD does? High Sierra is 10.13 from 2017, and iApple has made significant changes to how icloud works over the last eight years. Just a thought while this issue is being investigated.

I saw DTD's response, so I borrowed a friend's MacBook Pro that's running MacOS Sequoia v15.3.2. Created a blank account (didn't want them laughing at my meagre bank account) and it syncs with iCloud.

To answer Stuart's question, attached is a Console output. Although I think that it's the version of iOS that I'm using.

Stuart wants you to try and setup iCloud and send the console after you have problems.

DWG - Yes the attached file is from my MacBook Air that has the problems. I switched off sync, quit MD, started MD, tried to change the sync to iCould drive, which gave the Mac donk. Then went to Console and saved the file.
