Sync with Moneydance for Android is broken
I have had a very happy time with Moneydance until this week. I have the Moneydance desktop installed on two laptops, and I had the Moneydance app installed on an Android phone and an Android tablet. I am using the Dropbox Connection sync method. On Friday, I noticed that several transactions I had entered on the phone had not appeared in the register on either laptop, and transactions entered on my primary laptop had not appeared in either the phone or the tablet. I tried disconnecting the tablet's Dropbox sync first, and when I tried to reconnect it, Moneydance displayed "No folders found". I tried clearing the app data from Android settings, and when that led to the same result, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Moneydance from Google Play. I have also restarted the tablet several times, but I cannot reconnect to the Moneydance database.
Turning to my phone, I noticed that it last synchronized on 2/3, and I entered a test transaction to see if it would synchronize. In the past, when I exited a Moneydance account after entering the transaction, the app would display a message that it was synchronizing data. That did not happen with the new transaction, and while it showed up in Moneydance on my phone, it never showed up in my laptop's Moneydance. Again I tried disconnecting the synchronization on the phone, and "No folders found" greeted me. So now both Android devices are dead in the water.
I also use Joplin with the Dropbox API storage, and updates seem to be synchronized between all four devices.

I am experiencing the same problem. Since JAN27 my Android phone (SAMSUNG Galaxy S25) and Tablet (SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab A9) are not syncing anymore while everything is ok on both my LINUX (MINT 22.3) computers. I tried everytrhing I could think about, to no avail. Not sure the problem comes from Moneydance, Dropbox or Samsung. Anyone has a suggestion! Thanks

Hi
Moneydance developer Sean is working on an Android solution. As an Alpha tester currently testing build 20260205 syncing works unless you close the app almost immediately after entering a transaction. The main issue is related to biometric/pin app opening. Hopefully Sean will sort this soon and after more Alpha testing will release a new build for others to install.
Have Fun, Stay Safe.

derekkent23, thank you for the good news on synching. I hope it also addresses the problem of reconnecting to the database.

Same situation here. I noted the last sync from my Pixel 9a was something like Feb. 5, maybe earlier. Similarly, before looking here, I'd tried removing the app and reinstalling it.
I've also found that on my main computer Moneydance window, clicking "File - Syncing..." appears to "lock up" the whole program. It takes quite a while (as minutes) before it seems to come back to the main window where clicking on anything can be done again. At first, I thought the only way to get out of this was to kill the processes, but it did eventually come back. ONLY the "File - Syncing..." option seems to have/create this situation. All the other menus that I have tested appear to work as expected.
I'm using what appears to be the latest version for Linux 2024.4 [5253]. From Derek's post, it looks like there is a new version coming, 20260205 that is working sort of. I use this all the time and look forward to a "fix" ASAP.
Really appreciate the product and the team working on keeping it up and running.

@All
While we don’t yet have a confirmed release date for the public version of the new Android mobile app, our development team has released an updated build to the Beta channel recently.
The latest build has been uploaded to the Play Store in both the Alpha and Beta channels (Internal Testing and Open Testing). If you’d like to receive these updates, you can join here:
Alpha: https://infinitekind.com/prepreview
Beta (reviewed by Google, so it may appear slightly later): https://infinitekind.com/preview
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

Hi Maddy, and all there at Infinitekind,
Did you want any feedback on the beta version? Since you didn't ask for
it, I'm not sure what you gain from data shared by us simply installing
it. Thinking that is what a "Beta" release is for, here's a few quick
thoughts after installing it and using it today.
Best of all, it worked! Great job to the team and thanks for letting us
gain access to this.
Things that I noticed:
*
When opening it the first time I wasn't asked to enter my Sync
Passphrase to open the Dropbox Connection file. Maybe there was a
reason for this, but I remember having to enter it with the previous
version when I removed and added the app back on my phone.
*
On opening it the first time I was asked for Authentication but my
finger print doesn't work, but then I don't seem to actually need
it. I just swipe down and see my accounts. I wasn't asked if I
wanted to set up this Authentication....which I do.
*
The use Pattern option did seem to let me see the accounts too, but
I don't know why I was asked for that. In the settings, I did click
the option for a "PIN Lock" but am not asked to create a pin.
*
I see ALL my accounts - even ones I have hidden on my desktop. This
is not what I want on my phone. Ideally, it would be great to be
able to choose what accounts show on the phone as I don't really
want all of them to show up. IE: I don't want my investments and a
number of savings accounts to show up. Really, I only want a few
credit cards and one of my checking accounts to be on my phone view.
I may on a rare occasion need to see others, but normally I would
only want the accounts I use regularly when "out and about".
*
The font has changed and I can probably make it a bit bigger or
smaller with phone settings, but it would be nice if it could be app
controlled.
*
I don't remember if the previous app included an "X" at the top of
the screen or somewhere else, but I don't see a way to close the
beta version of the app without looking at all the open apps on my
phone and then swiping Moneydance to close it from those that I see.
I don't remember doing that with the old version...but I'm old and
probably just don't remember that this is how I closed it.
* Making an entry on the app, then closing the app, and seeing the
"Syncing" had taken place, when I got home, I don't see the entries
created while out doing errands. Maybe this is because it's the beta
and I'm not going to see the entries at home until it's finished
being set up, but that was not expected. It would be good to know
that the beta phone app won't show entries made in the home
registry...until....
All in all, I like it and am grateful I don't have keep track of
receipts until I get home. I still will, but for the interim if I have
to open the phone and recreate entries made while out, that okay. After
being so used to having the app on my phone, that gives a peace of mind.
Really appreciate you all and this wonderful software! I hope the above
is helpful. If you don't want feedback like this, please let me know.
Best and highest regards,
Dan Neville

Hi Dan
Can you confirm you are running Android build 20260205 shown on SETTING screen.
Some thoughts.
Point 1
If the old version of the Android app was installed and you are just updating to the Beta Build it want ask for the Passphrase. It should only do this if you have first uninstalled the existing app.
Point 2.
For me on my Samsung Galaxy S25 Android 16 the finger print does work. Does it work on other apps for you?
Being able to bypass security is a known, bug I have reported this to Sean the Moneydance developer. Security is enabled on the SETTING screen PIN LOCK
Point 3
I don’t know if the Android app has a Pattern or Face option, so can’t comment on them. I don’t use these on my Android devices. The PIN is actually your Android pin not one you setup for Moneydance.
Point 4
The only way to remove an account from the Android app is on the computer. Make the account inactive. Not ideal. So I agree, a way on the Android app to select which account appear would be a good idea.
Point 5
Understand.
Point 6
You close the Android App in the normal way using the Android O and then the three vertical to close the app running in the background.
Point 7
If you are running Android build 20260205 syncing should work provided after adding a transaction and returning to the main screen, then wait the short time for the sync date to update before closing the Android app. For me adding transaction on one of my two Androids or my two computers sync to the other devices.
Hope this helps.

Sorry for the delay in reply. Retired life just seems to keep me from
sitting at the computer all the time, now. I also wanted to run the beta
for a few days to confirm things I was seeing. Here's an update and
answers to your comments. BTW - I will be traveling for the next 10
days, so it will be a while before I get back home and can check the
home/main computer with Moneydance, and reply again to any other messages.
****************
Yes, The version is Android 20260205.
First and important point is that the app IS NOT syncing to the main
desktop. I don't get this, as it definitely shows it's sync'd, but I do
not see any phone entries showing up on the main computer. I've given it
a couple of days and numerous entries to test this. Not one of them
comes through. The desktop and main records are on my Linux Mint
[Cinnamon] OS.
Re: Point 1
I had totally uninstalled and rebooted the phone before downloading the
beta version. This is why I was surprised the authentication didn't
prompt me for the passphrase. Nor, did I really need to Authenticate
anything to start up. Furthermore, now that I've had the app for a few
days, each time it opens the Authentication screen shows on top of the
accounts list BUT can simply be bypassed by clicking on the background
list of accounts. This is not only not secure, but even if it did work,
anyone with my phone (who can log into it) could see see at lease some
if not all the accounts listed behind the authentication window.
Re: Point 2.
I'm using a Pixel 9a, and the finger print reader does work for other
apps. It's required for things like Logging in and apps like Bitwarden.
It has worked every time.
Yes, I have the security set on that screen, but was never asked for a
PIN...even though it shows it's checked.
Re: Point 3.
I don't use the face recognition either. I do have a pattern set on the
phone so my wife can get in if needed.
Re: Point 4.
I've asked about the accounts showing on the phone long ago. I was given
the same information you shared. That is not a good solution for me. I
also noted that the phone now shows the INVESTMENT accounts. I
definitely don't need or want those on my phone.
I don't know how complicated it is/would be to make showing
different accounts optional. If it's a challenge, I would definitely opt
for not showing the INVESTMENTS.
One other request was to be able to start typing for the Category.
As it is now, scrolling is the only option. It works, but being able to
start typing the category would be a way to more quickly get the one
wanted. NOT a big deal. Just a "it would be nice" feature request.
Re; Point 6.
For closing the app, I'm not sure I followed what was typed. I'm finding
I have to swipe up to "minimize" Moneydance which also shows all the
apps I have open on the phone. Then I can close the apps I don't want
open by swiping up. Again, not a big deal, but an "X" or something
asking if you want to close the app would be nice...at least once the
Authentication to open it works.
Thanks for your helping the Infinite Kind team Derek. I hope this helps.
Best,
Dan Neville

This comment was split into a new private discussion: Sync with Moneydance for Android is broken
Maddy:
The beta app synchronized -- sort of -- once, but it was worse than not syncing because my data was corrupted. After I installed the beta app and it synced, I ended up with several weird accounts (see screenshot *1952.png). Unfortunately, I hadn't backed up my data before trying the beta (yeah, stupid me). When I examined the weird accounts, they contained transactions I had created or changed to use new categories since the last successful sync a couple of weeks ago, and the new categories had been removed from the database. (I was able to clean it up and will know after I get my next bank statements whether I was successful.)
After I had finished my cleanup and backed it up, I synchronized my two laptops before trying the app again. It sat overnight while it was allegedly loading my data, and when it hadn't finished this morning, I restarted it by swiping it off the screen using the Android task manager (or whatever it's called -- not the thing in settings that kills the app entirely), and the identical screen in *1952.png appeared. The data shown on my main laptop was not affected, so I don't believe any additional synchronization occurred.
One thing that may have caused the corruption is that the initial sync from the beta app took so long that I opened Moneydance on my laptop. I am unsure.
While I was writing this, I had the phone off so I could examine the desktop program without risk of corruption. I closed the desktop app, turned on the phone, and started the Moneydance app after the desktop's final syncing message had closed. The app synced for about 4 minutes, and it did something -- I'm not sure what. Screenshot *1910.png shows two phantom accounts that don't show up in the desktop application.
Please let me know if you have some suggestions or if there is another beta build you'd like me to try. I won't be able to do any more with it today, but I have time on Monday. Thanks!

Hello Maddy et al,
I'm back from a 10 trip where I made multiple entries of our expenses during the trip. I'm now home on the main Moneydance account (my desktop) and having started it, see none of the entries from the mobile app. The app shows that it's sync'd but obviously something didn't process correctly.
I can see all the transactions from the mobile phone platform and now I'm entering each of them into the main data file. Once I have them entered, I'll create a back up. I'm not sure what steps I need to make to get the sync working again. And, after reading waterfordtrack's experience, I don't want to experiment on my own. Let me know if there is an updated beta or if there are steps you want me to verify, or what other steps I should consider.

1)As the data on your mobile device is up-to-date, we can take it from there.
To sync to the same sync file as your mobile device, you should follow the steps below:
You will need to launch Moneydance on your computer and click on File/Moneydance -> New -> Open Synced File, there, select the same sync method as it was originally setup on your computer (Dropbox Connection or Dropbox Folder).
You will see a list of data files with the name of your base account, select the same as the one on your mobile device and you will see a prompt for the passphrase (it should match the one you have created on your computer's previously), wait for the initial sync process to finalize and that will be it.
2) Please launch Moneydance on your computer and when you are in register view, navigate to Help->Console Window as outlined here
Click the icon with the horizontal ellipsis and navigate to Utilities->Convert to Primary and restart Moneydance.
Please keep us posted on your progress, Thank you!

Hi Maddy,
I've completed adding the of out standing entries manually. Looking into
the instructions below, I now, after entering the dropbox key allowing
for a connection, do not show any sync'd documents. Not sure how that
happened.
When I check the File / Syncing... I don't get any options. When I
looked at this a moment ago, I saw something like "Syncing is not
enabled". I don't remember exactly what it was, but the picture below is
what I see now. It seems like it hangs up if I click "Syncing..." now,
but the time I have taken to write this some process completes and the
window is interactive again.
Appreciate your advise.

Please send us a copy of your Moneydance error logs so we can investigate the issue in more detail.
They are saved on your computer as an errlog.txt file. You need to navigate to:/home/(yourusername)/.moneydance/errlog.txt
Finally you can copy the full content into your next reply here
Thano you

hi im in the same boat as everyone...android app/sync working fine until about a month ago. i deleted my dropbox files and downloaded the beta version and re-setup the syncing process but every time i set this up i get the name of my base, Mark's Finances, in the bank account section and the beta app just sits here trying to perform the initial sync...ive let this sit overnight and it never completes. pls help.

Hi all,
It's been a few weeks since I've heard anything more about the phone beta version. I'm still using it but have some real concerns about not needing to do anything to access it on the phone. The security screen still appears but is not needed. Just touching the accounts behind the screen takes one right into the app.
The other issue previously mentioned was the new app version showing ALL the accounts. I hope that is still being worked on too.
Please let me / us know when there is another update to try.
Thanks again for all your working on for Moneydance.
