I want to export part of my overall MD files to a new file. Which format should I export to so that MD will pick it back up and open it as a new file?

No export option will create a file that Moneydance opens as an Account set with just the data that you have selected. The option create files which are more universally read. With such a file Moneydance will read it QIF format) but it is like a migration exercise like you would do when changing software programs.

What is the purpose and reason for this?

    In short, you can’t.

BUT you can use toolbox clone dataset to create a new dataset with the master data in tact - ie accounts and categories but no txns (for example).
