Mike Bray - Report Writer Extension

Hi Mike
I have been looking at your bitbucket site - specifically your extensions for reporting.
I am a little confused with the information in the 2019 Wiki around the Report Writer section. Some of the links show details of the Jasper Reports extension and also refers to items that don't seem to exist in this extension once installed. Specifically things like being able to select different output formats and the screenshot of the parameters screen (https://bitbucket.org/mikerb/moneydance-2019/wiki/Report%20Writer%20Filter%20Parameters) contains items that I don't have.

Am I looking at the wrong thing or is this just that the documentation is out of step with the actual extension?

Steve, Report Writer is under development and has not been released, I
wouldn't use the Wiki for this.  You must have listed the files in the
Wiki to get to it as you can not get to it via the Home screen.

Hi Mike, I did think as much. I was looking for something that will create custom reports as the ones inside MD are pretty basic and limited. I sort of stumbled across this as I was looking. It looks very promising so will be quite keen to take a further look once you have a beta release?

Hi Tony, not yet it will be a few months. The post was to try and get
input on what people would expect to see.

    Hi Mike

I think a report writer is a great idea. The key to how well received it would be dependents on how easy it is for the average person you use. The need to know what’s going on under the bonnet will put most people off.
I know this depends on who your target user is.

I agree. As a geek, I want to be able to dump/extract raw data without having to write a script (eg just dump all prices or all securities or all txns). But also as a ‘normal’ user, I want to be able to extract the data as MD presents it.

For example, I just wrote a script to extract investment register data. It took quite a while to understand the MD ‘model’ and then translate that to a format that mirrors the MD onscreen investment register.

Perhaps have a ‘Geek’ / ‘User’ mode and flip between the two. The problem i see is that you will have to code for all datasets but then that’s what will make this tool useful.

I’m happy to beta test any early code and provide comments.

    Regards Stuart

Thanks for the feedback, you have both raised the one concern I had,
which is the ability of the user to use the extension.  The fields I am
making available are those on the screen for each record, for example
the Account Maintenance screen, the transaction screen and the
investment  transaction screen.  I am not exposing the underlying fields
or codes. For example for transaction status I am outputing
CLEARED/UNRECONCILED/RECONCILING not the internal status which is
numeric. I am only outputing individual records, there is no
summarisation.  I expect users to either use Excel or Jasper Reports to
    do the summarisation.

I know that Jasper Reports is not a general user tool but more of an
educated/IT savy user tool, but it is well known and free.  If people
wish to use a different tool they can do so by outputing the data top a

Well I think having the on screen data version will be the priority for most people. So great!!

I would agree. I think that initially for most people, they will want to be able to report on what they see on screen rather than the underlying data structure.
I too, would be more than happy to beta test when you get a little nearer.
