Has there been any progress on this excellent suggestion?

Moneydance+ Preference checkbox option: Suppress Memo Import
Please add this enhancement request to the list.
 That should do it.

Use the Toolbox secondary extension of "Toolbox: Zap memo fields"

I second this. My bank populates the Memo field with the exact same text as what is in the Description Field. While it is possible to Batch Change the Memo field to "blank", the change is only momentary. As soon as you "Confirm" the transaction the Memo text magically reappears. This essentially means having to "Confirm" all the transactions...then Batch Change the Memo field...then go back and update the Memo field for each transaction. So, overall...not particularly helpful.

Yes, this will semi-quickly clear the redundant memo fields, but the point is that it would be much easier and neater if they simply weren't downloaded at all. I would think this is an easy thing to program. A simple "Do not download memo field" checkbox would do the trick.

I think semi-quickly is a misnomer. Basically, you set the zap extension to your specifications, then once every how long you want (I do about 2 weeks) it takes literally about 10 seconds to zap them all.

As to "Do not download memo field", it's more complicated than that - I'll give just one example - Southwest and Amazon DO download pertinent information in MD+ accounts that ends up in the memo field - how do you delineate which should not be downloaded and which should? (there are more different examples). As for duplicate information (Matt Grimes comment) - that occurs in OFX downloads as well. And so on.

The point is that a simple "Do not download memo field" checkbox would be universal as well as a discarding of information. IK/MD does not believe in discarding downloaded data. It would be similar to asking for Description to not be downloaded, or to eliminate the category selection (many people do want that as well). What seems simple becomes a domino set of changes.

The zap memo bit covers many of the memo issues, and allows the user to decide what to zap and what to keep. And it is better than "semi-quickly" except for the setup itself.

BTW, to show you are not being dismissed, some of us "knowledgeable users" (as IK support likes to refer to us) asked for a change to MD+ memos as well. We walked through all the caveats that I mentioned a bit of, and were basically given the answer I gave you.

We did get a couple of changes to the clutter, but overall, the "will not discard data" won out.

Which is why Stuart wrote this toolbox zap extension, and some of us helped make it extensive, (he included OFX and QIF checks - I managed to get rid of memos from years ago), and Stuart made it very fast. The only issue is we added enough features that one does have to walk through the options and select what they want at least once.

I installed the extension. I'll give it a try next time I have some transactions to download.

I noticed there is an option in Preferences to Automatically Merge Downloaded Transactions...does that eliminate the task of "Confirm" each individual transaction?

    1. You don't have to wait, this isn't concurrent with a download, you do this "after the fact"... as I said, I do this about every two weeks or so (and just tolerate the MD+ clutter or the duplication until then). I have 35 years of data, and it was just "fun" to put like 400 months to check (default is 36), and see like hundreds of mostly duplicates like you mention, and then blow them away. My whole database felt "cleaner".... ;)

    2. The second option doesn't eliminate the Confirm if this is a download you haven't manually entered as well, but if manually entered and then matched to a download, you get an "automatic merge" versus duplicates and such. (This does not work for investment accounts).
[I have Automatically Merge Downloaded transactions for myself]

    Good points all.

I guess what I am really saying is that I was satisfied with the data downloaded in the QFX or QIF formats, enough so that I have only enabled MD+ on the accounts that have abandoned those formats or required manual downloading from the institution's web site.

Just trying to keep the whole MD thing as straightforward as possible, in the event I become unable to do our family accounting.

@dtd - Thanks for the clarification. The extension may not be of any value to me then. I'm a new user, just getting started. No historical data.

One other question: there is a blue circle in the right side of the description field. It seems to have three states:
    1. Solid Blue
    2. Open Circle
    3. No Circle

    What's up with that?

  12. 12 Posted by alanbob on 25 Dec, 2023 12:44 AM

    alanbob's Avatar

    That indicates transaction status:

    1. Solid Blue:  Downloaded, not confirmed

    2. Open Circle:  Downloaded, confirmed

    3. No Circle:  Manual entry, not downloaded

@Matt - oh, the extension WILL be useful then, as you download items with duplicates or cluttered information. Just download, ignore the duplication/clutter and blow it all away when you decide to do so.

I just had a lot of data over 35 years that I could blow away. You can do it every (whatever length) or so.

@alanbob - I do the same, I only use MD+ when I must, everything else stays the way it was. I have counseled others who moved everything to MD+ that it isn't the greatest concept. (For example, Fidelity doesn't work with MD+ but still works the Direct Connect way for their investment accounts)

And yes, I'm not real happy with MD+ comments, but you read the earlier message, I wasn't real happy about duplicate description/memo with OFX either. That's why I recommended the zap extension - we came up with a good memo deletion extension. ZAP!
