American Express error code
Trying to download from American Express in two different computers and two accounts gave this error: java.io.IOException: HTTP Error:503 Service
I refreshed the connection, checked for an update and disabled the connection. Now I cannot re-establish it.
I am stuck,
Debbie

It should "just start working again" once MD/IK installs a new configuration profile. The instructions are not totally clear yet (since we users can't test it "in place" yet), but if past memory is correct, you would basically do what the Amex instructions said - i.e. disconnect OFX, then reconnect OFX (that would give you the new Moneydance profile) - wish Amex had told us they were changing things, but no bank ever does.
But, wait for someone here (dtd or Stuart, or someone else) to say - hey - go for it (disconnect/reconnect) and it should work - i.e. we will learn that the new profile is now ready....

Replying to dtd. I too am grateful for all of the input, help and suggestions from this forum. I am a dedicated Apple user and left Quicken ages ago for MD.
The banks have made things complicated at times and MD and this community has continued to move us forward.
I’m awaiting the next push for this.

Here here. Thanks to everyone who helped.
Eagerly awaiting the go-ahead to start downloading from Amex again.

I am a Mac OS user, too, and am similarly distressed. Thank you all for starting and contributing to this thread.

There is a work-around that worked form me to download AMEX credit card transactions and get them into Moneydance.
!--Sign into your AMEX account and click on the "Recent Transactions" section.
2--Click "Previous Billing Periods" on the left side.
3--Choose the period you want to download.
4--In the Transactions section you will see the transactions for the chosen period.
5--Click "Download" under Transactions.
6--In the pop-up window Choose "Quickbooks" for the download file type.
7--Save the QFX file to your computer.
8--Open the file and MD should automatically load the transactions to the matching credit card account.
I tried to attach screen prints to aid in navigation, but IK didn't like the file type. Hope this helps, at least until MD gets things fixed.

Yes, manual downloads are a workaround. Luckily, Amex still supports QFX manual downloads (others do not, like Schwab).
A correction to your point 6 - Choosing Quicken gets you a QFX, choosing Quickbooks gets you a QBO file. Also, if MAY open automatically, but you have to have QFX file format "to be opened by Moneydance" as default.

Does anyone here (using AMEX) know if they have bank accounts as well as Credit Cards...? And if so, do these have 'normal' account numbers and also a route/sort code (as part of the amex connection)? If anyone wants to share info (even if redacted), email me:

OK, the profile fix has been applied.. Can people test it and confirm OK?

Success for me (from a Mac FWIW). I hadn't changed any settings since it first failed.
Thank you!

Amex downloads just worked for me. I did nothing on my end to correct anything. Moneydance 2024 (5117) on Mac.

Mine worked as well without doing any type of update or re-connection to AMEX. Those that worked on this fix all I can say is "Awesome Job!!!".
Can anyone give us a dumbed down version of the summary of what happened, what solved it and how long can we realistically expect OFX transaction downloads to work? Really don't want to have to consider going down the MD+ route as first I'm cheap and don't want to pay for it :) and second doesn't sound like it's as good as OFX (when working and assuming it continues to)

Many thanks to whoever fixed this! My AmEx downloads into Moneydance are now working again. I did call AmEx's online support team in the meantime, and they were completely clueless about both OFX downloads, and about Moneydance. All they could offer was a suggestion to call Intuit. They kept repeating their script, "We only support Quicken."

If I understand what happened here, Amex turned off some OFX services that MD doesn't really need, so once MD stopped asking for those services the automatic OFX download worked again. I think the underlying issue for banks that support OFX is that there is no 2-factor authentication (correct me if I'm wrong about that). They consider that a reputational risk issue - if you have someone's username/password you can download their transactions. That makes for a bad headline: "American Express was hacked and criminals stole users' credit card transactions".
Services like Plaid, which MD+ uses, has 2-factor authentication, which is why the banks cooperate with those services.
So, if banks don't stop supporting OFX altogether, like Chase, they want to plug as many "holes" as they can. It may also explain why Amex customer service had no information when they made the most-recent changes. I'm assuming they don't really like supporting OFX, so maybe they think putting up some new obstacles with no explanation will force people to stop using it.

@ jsblau. Sort of. Not quite. AMEX turned off the service that publicised their connection profiles. MD asks for this every time. So the fix was to hard code the correct connection settings within the profile and to turn off the profile requests.
Tools like hleofxquotes don’t ask for profiles. I suspect quicken had to make the same fix.

Well, I got up this morning, started Moneydance, and Amex OFX worked.
That sure put a smile on my face.
@jsblau - I'll go past "sort of, not quite" (which for Stuart is a totally accurate statement, as he knows what was changed) - and say 'very good assessment of the overall picture' - thanks! - as in my "dumbed down version" (as requested by @jstandfest) - for much of it, I can just point to your eloquent analysis.
Amex changed OFX stuff. As usual, no one was told, and it stopped working. I (having 4 amex credit cards) noticed immediately, but others had posted before I did as well.
I, though "just a user", started rounding up the troops - this was "sort of, not quite" :) :) like USAA in 2021. It was all about hleofxquotes and Stuart then, one an OFX expert, and one who could code like crazy (Mr. Toolbox!) - I knew how to test and document results. This was not a Moneydance change per se - Sean does that. This was more like a profile change/extension change type thing.
The rest has been discussed already. Sean added the profile change in the last 12 hours, it propagated to everyone (similar to "there is a new version" or "you can update these extensions") and now - it works again.
For how long will this work is probably one outstanding question. And I think the answer is easy, given the last 7-9 days... who knows? As @jsblau said - the banking industry is in flux right now - and is making decisions based on their needs, and sadly not really on the user needs - they won't even tell us what they are doing with OUR data/information.
87 Posted by dtd on 14 Aug, 2024 10:35 PM
So, my own personal shout out (again - hey once every 3 years is cool :) ) - to hleofxquotes and Mr. Toolbox for jumping in on this - 7-9 days is really pretty short analysis/how to fix/fix time when you get changes from a bank out of nowhere.
Stuart - that makes it +8 at the moment.... :)

First, thank you to all who reported the problem, those who fixed it, and those who discussed it.
I can report that my Mac using Sonoma 14.5 is now successfully connecting to Amex. I had disabled the connection, so went through setting it up again. All worked without a hitch.
Once again, thanks to all.
