Trying to download from American Express in two different computers and two accounts gave this error: java.io.IOException: HTTP Error:503 Service

I refreshed the connection, checked for an update and disabled the connection. Now I cannot re-establish it.

I am stuck,

Debbie

Interesting discussion. Anyone thought of complaining to the FTC/DOJ/Comptroller of the Currency? I think this is the result of Intuit enforcing terms in their contracts that make it onerous for banks to continue to offer non-quicken alternatives.

It's not Quicken (which is no longer owned by Intuit, btw), it's the move from OFX to FDX based on the banks' desire to not be responsible for such information being "leaked or stolen" somehow. Quicken also had to respond, and did so by becoming an aggregator themselves.

Each bank's response is "this is for better security", when mostly it's to keep them from having to be responsible to letting you see your own data. "It's the aggregator's fault"! And the aggregators don't mind that issue as they can make money from analyzing your data.

yes - it's basically a consortium of banks and aggregators... no user representatives, basically they don't count.

FDX is an industry consortium the same as OFX was. It is not an independent legislated body with wider goals.

If you want Financial institutions to be compelled to provide data in some way, shape or form, the only way to make it happen and enforce is through legislation where the organisations are compelled under the threat of fines, jail for executives and potentially de-registration of the organisation i.e. they could be closed down for non-compliance. As a minimum I would suggest you would be looking for manual downloads in QIF and/or OFX format.

Voluntary action by the institutions to provide the data in some useful way is patchy around the world.

I'm finding that instead of throwing a 503 error, Amex is not responding at all.

Nice there is no 503 error, but basically "nothing happens here"...

    Others?

Yes, same here running Mac OS Sonoma 14.6.1.

Control+D renders a "Downloading transactions" message at bottom of window that lingers on screen for maybe five seconds and then disappears. That's it.

This suggests there is now just no server response to what Moneydance is sending.

Apologies if this has already been posted, but manually downloading "Quicken" from the Amex website shows this message:

Because of a recent change, you may need to update your connection between American Express and Quickbooks or Quicken.

Clicking the link leads to a page with instructions to deactivate and reactivate the account for Quicken. No MD instructions, naturally. I tried removing and re-adding online banking in MD, but after entering my password I'm given two choices "Online banking" and "Online Billpay" which are both greyed out, leaving me unable to connect to Amex. Has anyone else seen this and found a way past, or has Amex also quietly killed off direct OFX for MD? Note the page I referenced above reads

To resume .QFX and .QBO downloads, please complete a Quickbooks and/or Quicken account deactivation and reactivation process.

    So I'm saying there's a chance...

No sorry, that concept doesn't work, except maybe for Quicken (as an aggregator).

Oh well, I was hoping that meant they disconnected OFX downloads as well and needed to reconnect them. It might be time to give up and go Plaid.

I don't understand.... I just chatted with AMEX and they gave me instructions on how to reconnect and download my transactions with Quicken. Why can't Moneydance do the same? Is it time to go back to Quicken?

Quicken now uses their own aggregator. MD does not. You can resume downloading using MD+. If you read some of the comments on the thread you will understand. Like everything else, money driven.

With Quicken it is often not obvious what method Quicken is choosing for the downloads, so you can be using an aggregator without knowing.

No change on OFX direct connect downloads. Don't expect it back.

Also, at least for me - MD+ with Amex also is not working - at least I haven't gotten any downloads for 10 days (and for people who read my posts, I always recommend waiting for "things to get better"), and 10 days ties my record for longest time to finally start working again on it's own (that was USAA).

Has anyone else gotten Amex downloads via MD+ in the last week to ten days?
A curious mind and a data gatherer would like to know.

So, for me at least - right now, it's manual downloads or nothing.

Well, hleofxquotes and I have been having a back and forth on manual downloads - especially given I have like 5 accounts I have to do. (3 CC, 1 Savings, 1 spouse CC)

hleofxquotes has created a script to get them. Very hands on, using terminal and such and a tool environment called Docker. So, not something to announce, but there is work being done.

Personally, I just wish Direct Connect still worked, or MD+ would come back "online" with Amex, but...

dtd, FWIW, I setup MD+ on Sep 14 after realizing Amex wasn't offering to reconnect OFX downloads. I was able to download current transactions that day and checked with the website to verify it was up to date. That gives you one data point; hopefully you can find what's keeping yours from functioning.

Thanks for the update - so you have downloaded Amex transactions since Sep 5?
That's cool, just checking to start an MD+ download concept.

Maybe Plaid just doesn't like me.... :)

Hmmm - you set up on SEP 14. Maybe I need to disconnect and reconnect - which I rarely recommend.

One thing to consider is that I think when you establish a MD+ link to an account is does an on demand download at that time after that is is doing scheduled downloads.

  25. 175 Posted by dtd on 16 Sep, 2024 10:53 AM

    dtd's Avatar

Also my thought, you may get 'neglected' after the initial download, so I ask for others thoughts/results as well.

Also, why a disconnect/reconnect might work as well.

  26. 176 Posted by dwg on 16 Sep, 2024 11:07 AM

    dwg's Avatar

Plaid would know you have connected before so I suspect a disconnect/reconnect may not work to force a download, they would not like to encourage that sort of activity by users to speed up data provision.

So far MD+ and Amex is working for me. I download about 3 times a week and all is good and up to date. I did a manual download during those first two weeks and MD+ is duplicating right now but I am ok with that.

Glad you brought this to our attention. I will keep the group posted on this.

I do the downloads manually on some accounts and use a program called CSV2QIF and another called CSV2OFX. I download CSV files which are then parsed into the appropriate format. Maybe IK could buy that program and incorporate it into a download routine for MD. I'm not interested a fee-based system, but I"ll pay for an upgrade that includes this. .
