Direct Connect with American Express
I tried downloading from Amex and received this pop-up message: "Because of a recent change, you may need to update your connection between American Express and Quickbooks or Quicken."
For Quicken users, it tells them to disconnect the account and reconnect it. I tried doing that on Moneydance, but it did not work. Are you aware of any solutions to this problem? Is there a way to reconnect to American Express to do Direct Connect downloads of transactions? Thanks.

It's not fun....
Link to this for the very long story (TL/DR - Amex has basically discontinue direct connect)

Your basic option is to use MD+ (Plaid), no, I'm not happy either.

Moneydance+ isn't working phenomenally well either. I was having issues with AmEx a few weeks ago, messed around with it, it started working the next day, and now, once again, it hasn't downloaded transactions from AmEx in 2 weeks (since 06Sep2024). Very frustrating. Not sure where the fault lies. Chase didn't download today either, but it's only been a couple of days for that, so I'm hoping everything sorts itself out by Monday, otherwise I guess I'm off to find something that works for AmEx or ditching that as my primary card. Decisions, decisions...

MD+ is never as good as OFX. I've also had some issues with AmEx on MD+ (a 10 day delay recently), but it does tend to "eventually" catch up.
Alternatives for both OFX (gone now) and MD+...
manual downloads - thank goodness Amex still has that option versus Schwab and USAA, but with 6 accounts, I find that tedious.
new methods - I'm working with hleofxquotes who wrote what I'd call "automatic manual downloads" - [he's the programmer, I'm a tester], but it is extremely raw (though it works), - no gui, use terminal to pass commands, and so on... but we'll see if hleofxquotes wants to go further with it...

Since AX turned off OFX downloads, I have been using manual downloads (i.e., download CSV file from AX website and then "Import" function within MD) and that has worked OK. Still, not the best, so I appreciate any efforts that might streamline our experience. My earlier trial of MD+ left me less than enthusiastic. I am using a Mac with OS Sonoma 14.6.1 and accessing AX via Safari.

I tried to use the CSV extension, but I'm getting an error, telling me there was a problem , probably an formatting error. I think I have the most current version of the extension, and my CSV2QIF converter works fine so I think the format is ok. Any suggestions?.

I'd recommend QFX downloads (i.e. Quicken) as they are basically OFX downloads, just manual, versus CSV for Amex.

I just downloaded the QFX file and MD opened and loaded the transactions correctly into the current file. Yes it's manual download, but it seems to me that an extension to download and open the QFX file would be possible. How about that Moneydance?

The issue is that there are still many many banks that offer manual OFX/QFX downloads, and every one is different. It would be a monumental task to "web scrape" all banks through their websites.
However, MD did attempt to do that by creating a built in specialized web browser to allow that, but as stated above it was a monumental bit, and was abandoned as too difficult to maintain.
Automatic OFX direct connect was a standard, and only required pointers to the OFX server of each bank, so still had some maintenance as things changed, but a small fraction of automating web scraping.
And yes, I know you are only asking about Amex, but users would then ask for MD to provide for other banks to have this feature.... (true for MD, true for an extension writer).
