Data import

I have an excel spreadsheet which records receipts and payments for one of my bank accounts. Rather than re-keying all this data is there any way I can import the data as uncleared transactions? The last time I played with this ( a couple of years ago) it seemed that I could only import bank transactions to reconcile against items I had already input

Assuming the data is laid out in neat columns you should be able to save it as a CSV file and that should import as new transactions.

When I look at File Import .csv is not offered as file extension. So is there some other option for importing data?

    Hi,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

If your version of Microsoft Excel allows it, you could try following the steps below:

    • Open the Excel File: Open your Excel file (.xlsx or .xls) in Microsoft Excel.
    • Select Save As:
    • Click on File in the top menu.
    • Choose Save As (or Save a Copy for cloud-based Excel versions).
    • Choose CSV Format:
    • In the Save as type dropdown menu, select CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv).
    • Name your file and choose a location to save it.
    • Save the File:
    • Click Save. Excel may prompt you about potential data loss due to formatting differences. Click Yes to proceed. ________________________________________

Alternatively, you could try using Google Sheets:

    • Upload the Excel File
    • Go to Google Sheets.
    • Upload your Excel file by dragging it into Google Sheets or using the File > Open menu.
    • Export as CSV:
    • Once the file is open, go to File > Download > Comma-separated values (.csv, current sheet).
    • Download the File:
    • Your CSV file will be downloaded to your device.

Finally, you can refer to this article of the Knowledge Base about Importing CSV Files to Moneydance!

Thanks for that. I am about 90% of the way there
When I run the import all the fields go in the right place. There is, however, a blue dot at the end of the Description field and when I click on a line of data a box comes up asking me to confirm the data and then the blue dot goes white if I click on confirm. Also when I select account reconciliation every line is ticked as reconciled. Is there no way the data can be marked as unreconciled so thet it appears in the account as if I had entered a manual transaction

Generally, after importing your data, you should go through the confirmation process, as outlined here.

To begin the confirmation process, you should select the first transaction in the register with a 'blue dot'. A panel will appear on the right of your screen which shows the 'Current Transaction' details. You should amend the category within this panel, then select 'Confirm'.

You'll see the solid blue dot change to a blue circle. Moneydance will then move to the next unconfirmed transaction in the register.

As you go through this process it will become quicker and easier. Moneydance will begin to recognize the information you have previously confirmed, and start to suggest the correct categories within 'Similar Payees' in the panel on the right.

The next time you download/import your data the correct categories will automatically be assigned, and this will improve as you confirm more transactions.

Whilst playing around with this I have caused myself a problem

When I try to open a .csv file unrelated to Moneydance it opens Moneydance
with the file import window open

How do I get out of this?

    • Locate the CSV File you don’t want to open with Moneydance:

    • Right-click the file and select Open with > Choose another app. In the list of apps, select the program you'd like to use to open CSV files (e.g., Excel, Notepad, etc.).

    • Check the box Always use this app to open .csv files. Click OK.
Your CSV files should now open with the chosen program instead of Moneydance.
