Vanguard Manual Download: Duplicated DivReinvest Transactions
I manually download Vanguard transactions (Quicken download option) and then import into MD. Since the beginning of this year, it has been duplicating Dividend Reinvestments; they appear as both a Div and DivReinvest transaction in the register. Wondering if anyone else is experiencing this and have found a workaround besides just deleting the Div transactions? And why doesn't MD offer an option to merge transactions for investment accounts?

Hi Nathan,
We are sorry to hear about the problem you have encountered.
The automatic categorisation that applies to downloaded or imported transactions in bank, credit card, and other account types doesn't also apply to investment transactions. We have plans to improve this as well as to allow merging of likely duplicate investment transactions, but the support is currently pretty basic.
There is one thing that might provide a more immediate solution, which is to set the default category for your investment account. When viewing your investment account register, select the Account -> Edit menu, which will show the settings for your account, as in the attached screenshot. In this window you can choose a different "Default Category", and future transactions will have your selection for the category.
To more easily change the already-entered transactions, you can select a range of those transactions in the Bank Register by doing the following:
click the first transaction you'd like to change
shift-click the last transaction you'd like to change, which will select all of the transactions between the first and last
Right-click (or control click) on the register and select the Batch Change -> Category menu, then select the category you'd like for the selected transactions
Hopefully this helps improve things in the short term, and we'll try to improve investment account categorisation in a future update

Thank you for the reply.
The issue is not a categorization issue but a duplicate transaction that
never used to appear before. I am almost certain that this is an issue on
Vanguard's end, for when I import transactions into MD, it just duplicates
DivReinvest transactions: once as a Div transaction and again as a
DivReinvest transaction. The Div transactions then just need to be deleted
and all is reconciled, though it would be great if MD recognized these
duplicates and was able to merge them.

Generally, when the investment transactions you wish to merge are within the same account, you can proceed as follow:
Launch it and select 'Update mode'
In the MENU: Currency & Security tools tab, choose:
FIX: Detect and merge/fix duplicate Security within same Investment Account
Select->proceed and follow the on-screen instruction.
Finally, restart Moneydance for the changes to be implemented.

Thank you.
When I did that, it says "CONGRATULATIONS - No duplicated Securities within
Investment Account(s) found" and those duplicate transactions still exist
within the Register.

Open the downloaded file in an editor and see what is in there, the contents of the file may give an indication as to why you get 2 transactions in Moneydance.
Both OFX/QFX and QIF files are plain text files that are human readable.

I have the same issue and the only way I have been able to fix the resulting file is to change the DivReinvest transaction to a Buy. Then it won't continue to download.
The Vanguard activity summary shows the two transaction as a "Div" and as a "Reinvest". That has been the case for quite a while, not just since 2026 began. So it seems to me that Moneydance should be translating the Vanguard "Reinvest" transaction to a Moneydance "Buy", not to a "DivReinvest" since Vanguard generates two transactions each time one of its mutual funds has a dividend that is set up to reinvest...

It sounds like a problem in the provided data.
If they are presenting two transactions then need to present one as a Div and the other as a Buy.
ReInvDiv or DivReinvest should work in a QIF file if a single transaction is used, I would expect that to be ReInvDiv as that is what Intuit defined in the QIF spec.
Reinvest is appropriate for a single line income and reinvestment transaction in an OFX file. It is not a valid action in QIF file.
