When I migrate to a new computer, how do I make sure those files are saved and transferred? Where are they located? How to I include them in my backup of files to restore to a new machine on a mac?

Momtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/485532072020-08-18T19:46:02Z2020-08-22T18:48:04ZCustom File Readers Location

Hi Mom,

In a Windows environment, the file - mdcsvimporter.props - resides in:
C:\ Users \ Windows Username \ .moneydance
(take note of the [ . ] in front of . moneydance)

Your normal backup routine should include the entire .moneydance folder.

In some operating systems a [ . ] in front of a folder renders the folder hidden. In that case you would need to set the operating system to show hidden items.

so the file that contains the various readers I have custom created is mdcsvimporter.props ?

That is correct.

Here is a Moneydance KB article that provides the default location of Moneydance data files. It should help to get you close to the location of mdcsvimporter.props as well.

Q. When you moved the mdcsvimporter.props file to the new computer, did you first install the CSV Importer and have it create it's own mdcsvimporter.props file and then replace the original mdcsvimporter.props file with yours?

Make sure to restart Moneydance.

The above steps are what I followed to have the custom readers appear in a new computer as expected.

If you were to put in place your mdcsvimporter.props file before the CSV Importer created it's own mdcsvimporter.props file, then the CSV Importer may over-write the mdcsvimporter.props file that you placed there beforehand with an empty mdcsvimporter.props file.

Worst-case scenario is that it shouldn't be difficult to just copy the settings one-by-one from your old machine to the new one.

So does the mdcsvimporter.props file go in the Moneydance folder or the fmodules folder?

I did already get my other data in Moneydance, then installed the importer, then moved the file. And still no luck. Will manually re-create, but wondering what can be done in the future to avoid the loss of the file?

Rachel Rahmantag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/485532072020-08-22T22:46:21Z2020-08-22T22:46:21ZCustom File Readers Location

I'm a fellow user.

That file is in the .moneydance folder that is in your home directory, so the level above the fmodules folder.

Moneydance backups and the information in the knowledge base related moving between systems relates to the information that cannot be readily recreated or regenerated, that is your actual data. It does not relate to the extensions you have installed or your preferences etc.

If you have as your goal to be able to have complete information about every aspects of your Moneydance usage, then in addition to the Moneydance backups (which have the ability to recover in some very specific usage cases) you need to take backups outside of Moneydance that captures things like the extensions, installed, your preferences etc.

The Moneydance backups are not designed nor intended for this, they are a backup of a single data set only, the data set you have open, they do not capture the environment, these backups are not a complete backup solution.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/485532072020-08-23T00:09:58Z2020-08-23T00:09:58ZCustom File Readers Location

Hi Rachel,

When I originally posted my last reply I inadvertently implied that mdcsvimporter.props should be put in the fmodules folder. That was my error; my apologies. I since edited out that error.

mdcsvimporter.props belongs in the .moneydance folder.
