Sorry to hear about the problems you've been experiencing.

What kind of account do you have with PNC? If it is a Virtual
Wallet account, you actually won't be able to connect using direct
connect. For some reason, they support direct connect on all
accounts except the Virtual Wallets.

I can confirm that otherwise, PNC Bank do support direct
connect. Moneydance uses exactly the same OFX server connection
protocol as Quicken but your bank representative may not know this
and mistakenly believe that you can not connect in Moneydance.

Your bank requires that you activate your account for direct
connections before you can download in Moneydance. You can find
more information about this process on the PNC website -
https://www.pnc.com/en/personal-banking/banking/online-and-mobile-b...

Your financial institution should also advise you of the login
details you should use for direct connect, as generally these login
details differ from those used with online banking or ATM.

understand how any of this works. PNC insists they don't support
MD, only Quicken. When I ask for whatever would work to connect
Quicken, they tell me to use my usual login information (which
works, btw). So I'm stuck here. I tried to follow the MD manual to
manually connect to the OFX file (I think that's what it was
called) but when I entered the website, it just took me to the
bank's login page. From there, I couldn't find any way to download
my information to import into MD. It's just too much work and
confusion when Quicken does all this automatically. As much as I
hate Quickens business model and crappy customer support, I need
something that works without all the hassle, and MD with a PNC
account is a lot of hassle, at least for me.
Thanks for the info. It just leaves me where I was before, but I
appreciate the response. Dave J

David Johnsontag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/389117022016-01-15T10:09:51Z2016-01-15T10:09:51ZPNC + Moneydance = train wreck

Hi David,

As you have a Virtual Wallet account, you will be unable to use
direct connect with your financial institution.

Connecting with your bank can cause confusion as there are two
methods that personal finance software can use to access your
accounts: direct connect and web connect.

With web connect, the software basically connects to your bank's
website and downloads and imports OFX, QFX, QIF, and OFC files
automatically. This is likely what you were using with Quicken.

Direct connect actually connects to a server at your bank
instead of their website and usually requires different login
credentials than you would use to log into your banks website.

Moneydance only supports automatic connections through direct
connect and not web connect.

In regards to downloading the transactions directly from your
banks website, if you are unable to locate this feature on their
site, I would recommend contacting your bank to ask where this is
located, as most financial institutions have the option to download
transactions. When you have found the download page, you can open
your bank's download page directly (after entering the appropriate
address in the Account --> Edit Account menu) by going to the
menu bar and selecting Online --> Open Account Website, which
makes the download process easier.
