I removed files from my list of accounts and believed that they were placed in "Archive" files. I cannot figure out how to retrieve my "archived" files. Please advise.

They won’t really help you. You need to restore a backup. File/restore backup. Untick retain sync settings.

    Hi Patci

What version and build of Moneydance are you running e.g. 2024.2(5172).

Moneydance does not have an archive feature as such.

If you only just made the change you can follow Stuart’s advice or

If you have removed the account from the Side Bar (List on the left) click on the + at the bottom of the Side Bar and ADD the account back.
If you have made an account INACTIVE under TOOLS - ACCOUNT – double click on the account and untick the INACTIVE as well as HIDE ON SUMMARY PAGE (IF BALANCE IS ZERO) so account is listed on SUMMARY PAGE.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Patci,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

Moneydance creates an automatic backup file each time you close your file, until the set number exist, then each file will be updated in turn.

When these files are stored in the default location, they're accessible from Moneydance via Help --> Show Backup Folder.

It is possible to amend the backup file settings, as well.
To achieve this, you can choose Moneydance --> Preferences, then select the 'Backups' tab, as outlined in this article of the Knowledge Base.

From this window, you can amend the backup location, and choose the maximum number of backups to be stored.

It is possible to amend the backup location, to ensure the automatic backup files are sent elsewhere. For example, one could choose an external drive, or a shared folder location like Dropbox, iCloud etc. This will make your data accessible from another system, even if you were to encounter complete computer failure, for instance.

You can also create manual backup files whenever you require, and store these files to a location of you choice. To create a manual backup file, you should choose File --> Export Backup. This will create a .moneydancearchive backup file - the same format as the auto backup files.

Generally, the files with a - .moneydancearchive file extension can be restored into Moneydance by double clicking them.

Alternatively, you can choose File --> Restore from Backup (or 'Import New Account Set' from the Welcome window). Then navigate to and select the backup file.

    • In the resulting window you will see the option to Keep Sync Settings from the Original File - if you were syncing your data file with another device. If you select this option, your restored file will continue syncing as the original file.
If this option is not checked, you would have set up syncing anew.
      ________

When you restore data from a backup file, a new data file will be created for use going forward.
If the restored data file is in the default location, it's accessible from Moneydance via Help --> Show Documents Folder.

Any data files stored here are accessible from the program by choosing File --> Open. Any files you've created or restored will be listed here.

Finally, if you'd like to re-name a restored file, you can follow the steps in this article of the Knowledge base.

It's important you close the Moneydance program fully before you make any changes.

Then rename the data file. You should retain the .moneydance file extension at the end of the file name.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.
