FX do not download and apply to transaction
Hello,
I encounter a problem on the FX rate whereby, when I download the FX rates using the extension tool using the ECB rates:
1. I have no assurance that the rates have been properly applied to the table;
2. I don't understand if the rates have been downloaded correctly;
3. then, the rates do not apply correctly to the transactions downloaded from my bank
This FW feature is key for me. I would like to use it to the full. Kindly advise on what is the depth of FX features in MoneyDance. I have a question on the possibility of changing the base currency of all my data (over 10 years) from ZAR to EUR. What is the possibility to change the base currency?
Kind regards,
Laurent

Hi Laurent,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.
1) We would recommend installing the latest version.
Moneydance 2024.4 (5253) is available for downloading from this page.
You should choose to overwrite or manually uninstall the previous version.
2) Generally to update your stock/currency price/rate, you can use either the extension Quotes and Exchange Rate Updater v.1046. or the Quote Loader v.330104
3) In order to change currencies in your account/s, you should follow the instruction below:
Navigate to "Extensions->Manage Extensions" and install the "Toolbox" v.1068.
Launch the "Toolbox" and select Update Mode
Navigate to Menu:Currency and Security Tools
In the resulting window, under "Update Functions" you should select:
"Fix: Force Change Accounts/Categories [& Securities] FROM Currency TO Currency
"Proceed" to select the relevant account/s.
Finally you should restart Moneydance to retain the changes.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

If you use Quote Loader you can do manual updates, so you can see what rates it retrieves and select to save them.
When you download transactions to an account it would be expected the currency of the account and the downloaded transaction would be the same, FX rates are then only used if the category you assign the transaction to is in a different currency so determine the category amount.
If you are looking to download transactions in one currency and load them into an account in a different currency applying FX rates as you go Moneydance is not geared to do that.
While you can change the base currency of the Account Set, the software will not change the currency on the existing accounts and transactions and recalculate the amounts based on the new currency.

Tools -> Currencies will show you the history of exchange rates that have been downloaded for verification.
And what should be mentioned is BACKUP your file!!! Maddy did not mention that in the steps above but it is essential. Before using toolbox and changing the base rate. Toolbox is excellent but you may end up doing a modification that you did not wish. Toolbox will remind you to do that backup (Toolbox +1) but ALWAYS have backups around.

Thank you for the kind response.
I found that I had a fx rate value in the table that had been created by mistake with a future date in 2032. I believe this could have impacted the way FX rates are pulled into transactions.
I take good note of doing a back up before changing the base currency. Thank you.
