Moneydance expenses graph includes uncategorized transactions but only for current month
I leave transfers and other transactions that I do not want showing up as expenses as uncategorized (e.g. empty category). This has worked until this month. For some reason, my largest monthly expense category is now the empty category, but if I look at the expense reports for "Last Month", or even "This Year", this category is not visible. Can someone help me fix this?
I'm also open to suggestions on how to better use Moneydance if the flow I am describing is wrong.

Hi Jack,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.
Firstly, please accept my sincere apologies for the delay in responding to your query.
When uncategorized transactions appear as expenses, it usually indicates that one of them contains a split or an unintended category. If you run the Expense report sorted by “This Month” and select the Uncategorized entry, you should see the transactions responsible.
Correcting the category or removing any split lines should resolve the issue.
Generally, leaving transfers uncategorized is fine, but here are two safer alternatives:
Use proper transfer categories (as transfers never show up as expenses)
Create a “Non‑Expense” parent category
Use tags instead of blank categories
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

Hi Maddy,
There does not appear to be a category nor a split on these transactions. I have uploaded a screenshot of one of the transactions that is being shown so you can see.
Best,
Jack

You could double click on this transaction to edit it, then enter the “other” account in the Category field of the transaction, as outlined here.
Please keep us posted on your progress, Thank you!

Hi Maddy,
I just tried doing that, but this creates a new problem: duplicate transactions.
When I import my transactions there is already a copy of the transfer in both accounts, so if I mark them with the categories of each other, Moneydance thinks that I sent twice as much money as I did. Is there an intended way to handle that also?
Thanks

After downloading/importing your data, you should go through the confirmation process, as outlined here.
To begin the confirmation process, you should select the first transaction in the register with a 'blue dot'. A panel will appear on the right of your screen which shows the 'Current Transaction' details. You should amend the category within this panel, then select 'Confirm'.
You'll see the solid blue dot change to a blue circle. Moneydance will then move to the next unconfirmed transaction in the register.
As you go through this process it will become quicker and easier. Moneydance will begin to recognize the information you have previously confirmed, and start to suggest the correct categories within 'Similar Payees' in the panel on the right.
The next time you download from the bank many of the correct categories will automatically be assigned, and this will improve as you confirm more transactions.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

Hi Maddy,
Thank you for the reply, but it doesn't really address my concern.
Best,
Jack

Thanks again for your reply.
I understand how to confirm transactions.
I do not understand what confirming transactions has to do with handling duplicated transactions that are created by marking the category of a transaction as a different account.

Part of the confirmation process is the ability to merge transactions so it combines the transaction downloaded with one already in the register.

It is worth noting that as Moneydance follows accounting rules then every transaction must have an entry in the category field. The Entry can either be a category or an account, if you can leave this 'blank' that means you must have a category with a blank name. This can be problematic at times and Moneydance may not handle this properly.
The reason that there has to be a category entry is that under account rules all transaction must have a source and a destination, the account you are entering the transaction in is one of these and the entry in the Category field determines the other side.
You can select "show other side" to show the other register the transaction is in.
