Moneydance 2024.4 opens synced/restored dataset to blank screen with 100% CPU

Hello,

I’m experiencing a repeatable problem opening my Moneydance dataset on a secondary Mac. Moneydance successfully loads and validates the dataset, but the application displays a blank window and consumes approximately 100% CPU indefinitely.

Environment:

Moneydance 2024.4, build 5253, on both computers
Primary Mac: macOS 26.5.2, Apple Silicon — dataset opens normally
Secondary Mac: macOS 26.6.2, Apple Silicon — blank screen
Sync method: Dropbox Folder
Dataset contains approximately 30,279 transactions and 312 accounts

The problem began after I selected “Reset Dropbox Folder Sync Data from This File” on the primary computer to reduce the size of the Dropbox sync folder.

Troubleshooting performed:

1. Confirmed that the primary Moneydance dataset still opens and contains the correct data.
2. Confirmed the Dropbox .moneydancesync folder is available offline and Dropbox reports all files are up to date.
3. Moved the secondary Mac’s original local .moneydance file aside.
4. Used “Open Synced File → Dropbox Folder” to create a new secondary copy.
5. Moneydance created and finalized a new local moneydance.moneydance package, but displayed a blank window.
6. Force-quit and reopened the new local dataset. The blank screen occurred again.
The log showed that the dataset loaded successfully:
 - Trunk loaded in approximately 0.34 seconds
 - Incremental transaction files loaded
 - Dataset validation completed with 30,279 transactions and 312 accounts
 - File-opening routines completed
 - No loading or decryption error was reported
8. Activity Monitor/ps showed Moneydance continuously using approximately 99–100% CPU.
9. Captured a 10-second process sample. It shows the activity concentrated in Java’s AWT-EventQueue-0; the TIKSync and other background threads appear idle.
10. Reset Moneydance’s local settings by moving this folder aside:

~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance

Moneydance created fresh settings, but opening the dataset still produced the same blank screen and high CPU usage.
11. Created a fresh .moneydancearchive backup on the working primary Mac and imported it on the secondary Mac with Dropbox paused. The restored backup also opened to a blank screen.
12. Created a completely new, empty account set on the secondary Mac. That account set opens and works normally.

This appears to be triggered specifically by my real dataset on the secondary Mac, rather than by Dropbox availability or Moneydance generally.

I also noticed that the Dropbox sync directory contains approximately 4,543 entries and many historical mdata-v1 (... conflicted copy ...) files dating back several years. This is despite having used “Reset Dropbox Folder Sync Data from This File.” I have not manually removed any of those files.

I can provide or attach:

 - The secondary Mac’s errlog.txt
 - The macOS sample output showing the AWT EventQueue activity
 - Additional sync-folder analysis if needed

Could you advise whether this is a known issue with macOS 26.6.2 or a particular dataset/Summary Page component? Is there a preview build or startup option that can bypass the Summary Page so I can open the dataset? I would also appreciate guidance on safely rebuilding or cleaning the Dropbox sync folder without risking the working primary dataset.

Thank you,

Ben

  1. Hi Ben,
We are sorry to hear about the problem you have encountered.

In order to determine what might be causing the problem, please can you send us your Moneydance error logs from the primary computer?

They are saved on your computer as an errlog.txt file.

You can get to your error logs as follow:

    1) navigate to Help->Console Window to show the console log in a window

    or

    2) in the Finder, press ⌘⇧G and then copy and paste ~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support into the field and press enter/return.

At that point the finder will show an internal folder containing the errlog.txt file which includes the log.

Finally you can paste the full content to your next reply.
To add an attachment to this thread, please click on the "Browse" button.

    Alternatively:

when you are in register view, navigate to Help/Moneydance->Console Window.

At the bottom left of the window you should see a round symbol and a downwards arrow.

Click the arrow and choose: File and Folders->Console log->Show file location.

In the following window you should see a file called error log, you can open the file and copy the content in your next reply or add it as an attachment (whichever is easier)

    Thank you

  2. I've attached the error log, and I'm now seeing the issue on the primary computer as well, so the urgency is higher now.

  3. It seems that you have some outdated extensions still installed. This may be causing a problem.

Temporarily removing all the extensions from the extensions folder should resolve the problem.

    You should simply navigate to:

    /Users//Library/Containers/Moneydance/fmodules

    or

    /Users//Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/fmodules

In the folder fmodules you should delete any .mxt files and restart Moneydance.
Finally, you can re-install your extensions by navigating to Extensions->Manage extensions

Alternatively, install the Toolbox extension from Extensions->Manage Extensions. Load the Toolbox and choose 'Update Mode' by navigating to Toolbox Options at the top right corner. Choose Menu General tools->Fix: Delete Orphaned extensions and restart Moneydance!

If the problem persists, you may want to switch sync method to Dropbox Connection.

To change sync method you can follow the steps below:

From your primary computer: Launch Moneydance and navigate to File->Syncing
Choose Don't Sync and close Moneydance.
Then repeat the same in the secondary computer.

From the Primary computer, you should navigate to File–> Syncing->Dropbox Connection
Sync by connecting to your Dropbox account. Moneydance will communicate with the Dropbox service if you authorise it to access your files.
You will be redirected to the Dropbox website where you'll be given an authorisation code that you should enter into Moneydance.

    Please note:

With "Dropbox Connection" Moneydance uses the Dropbox API to talk to the Dropbox service directly. So, although you don't need to have Dropbox actually installed on your computer, you do need to be online when Moneydance is running in order for changes to be synced.

On the secondary computer, you should navigate to File –> New– >Open Synced File

    • Choose the same sync method (Dropbox Connection) and select "Authorize with Dropbox->Allow"

This should open a webpage where you will see: "Enter this code into Moneydance to finish the process"

You should simply copy and paste the code in the Moneydance window and click "Next".

    • Wait a moment and the window will populate with the available sync files

Choose the same file as the one on your computer!

Finally enter your encryption password, click "Next->Finish" and allow the initial sync to finish.

Please keep us posted on your progress, Thank you!

  4. Hi Maddy, I'm still getting the blank screen after removing the mxt files. Also, as I mentioned in my last reply, this is happening on the primary system as well now, so I have no access to Moneydance menus, etc. I've attached the most recent errlog.txt.

  5. Please restart both computers.
Then try restoring from a backup, as this should resolve the issue

The files with a - .moneydancearchive file extension can be restored into Moneydance by double clicking them.

Alternatively, choose File --> Restore from Backup (or 'Import New Account Set' from the Welcome window). Then navigate to and select the backup file - if you can open Moneydance on any of the two machines

    • In the resulting window you will see the option to Keep Sync Settings from the Original File - if you were syncing your data file with another device.

If you select this option, your restored file will continue syncing as the original file.
If this option is not checked, you would have set up syncing anew.

When you restore data from a backup file, a new data file will be created for use going forward.
If the restored data file is in the default location, it's accessible from Moneydance via Help --> Show Documents Folder.

Any data files stored here are accessible from the program by choosing File --> Open. Any files you've created or restored will be listed here.

Additionally, if you'd like to re-name the restored file, you can follow the steps in this article of the Knowledge base.

It's important you close the Moneydance program fully before you make any changes

Then rename the data file. You should retain the .moneydance file extension at the end of the file name.

Please keep us posted on your progress, Thank you!

  6. I tried restoring from yesterday's backup and got the same blank screen, but I was able to restore a backup from two days ago and that worked. I lost a few transactions, which is unfortunate, but I can go back and add them again.

I cleared the sync data from the Dropbox folder and started a syncing again fresh. It appears to be working on the remote computer now too. Thanks for your help.

  7. Thanks for following up, Ben!
I'm happy to hear that everything is sorted now.

I'll go ahead and close this discussion for the time being, but please feel free to reach out if you need any further assistance.
