I am fairly new to moneydance and I made it my personnal goal to try to help anyone with this product to prevent a return to Quicken (I am really bitter towards Intuit rental policy on software) .

Let me see if I can show you some of the ways I work with the product that may help you.

From my perspective moneydance has saved me 1/2 the time to reconcile than what Quicken used to. (By the way I was using Quicken 2007)

1) Quicken has a seperate download window with all the transactions listed by date. However, you can't sort the data or quickly find anything. You have to scroll endlessly to match a receipt with a transaction. Moneydance has a button on top called Unconfirmed to quickly see the downloaded transactions. Also, the quick find search bar at the top right is marvelous to match a receipt to a transaction.

2) Quicken has an accept or match manually process which is tedious. Moneydance shows you a merge, categorize, original and a few other options right away. This method does take a bit of time to adjust if you have been using another product for any lenght of time. But I always think, if I would have learned MoneyDance first and migrate to Quicken, I would find Quicken limiting in the matching process. I agree, however, that MoneyDance could do a better job laying it out to make it clearer to look at. i.e. putting the words merger, categorize on the left as most read left to right.

3) I don't understand why you are getting duplicates. Are you accepting the transactions automatically? That is something I don't do. I always want to check my receipts with my online data to make sure they match. Hence, I never get duplicates.

Hope this helps a little bit. If not, the support here is always responding to post which is more than you can say about the competition, unless you have a credit card in hand of course. ; )

I'm sorry to hear that you are frustrated by MD.
I think that a slightly different approach to downloading and matching your data will address your problem.
First, I just want to make sure, are you using MD Build 751(or some number relatively close to that)? In some of the earlier builds of MD the matching process was less intuitive. You can find out your build number under Help->About Moneydance.
So, when you download transactions, click on the new transaction. Below it is a list of possible matches. You want to select merge for the one it matches up with. MD has a learning algorithm so it should quickly become very accurate at presenting the first option as the correct match. If your dates are far apart between the transaction you entered and its match as the bank has the date, you can change in the preferences the number of days difference Moneydance will try and match in.

Please try clicking on a downloaded transaction and merging it with the suggestion match and see if that resolves your issue. Otherwise, let me know and we will look into other solutions.

Sincerely,
I 'upgraded' to the new version of MD only to find it made my account balances EXTREMELY negative! It seems like the running totals don't add up properly anymore either. My checking account is obviously NOT negative. Is this a known issue? Is it due to my bank? Is it auto accepting transactions (before I had to 'approve' them before they were put into the 'register' and the 'cha-ching' sound played)...HELP! I don't have the time to sift through everything and I too changed from using Windows to Mac and thus got rid of Quicken because they were so behind on updating for Mac..... can anyone help??

Jennifer Rutledgetag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/24646572010-08-11T21:01:34Z2010-08-11T21:01:34ZMoneydance 2010 Reconcile MAJOR issues

Hi, Jennifer - I THINK I may have received a solution - I'll forward the
response to you tonight.

What happened (that I missed completely) is that they moved the "Accept"
part of the transaction download into the MAIN window. So, when you
download transactions, they go immediately into the register, with a
little blue (at least on my screen) dot that indicates they have not been
"accepted". If you download and then go right to "Reconcile" w/o first
ACCEPTING those transactions, you effectively have a bunch of DUPLICATE
transactions.

Apparently (I haven't tested this yet - will do that tonite or over the
weekend); if you select each transaction that's so marked, you're
presented the option of "merging" it with existing transactions.

Hope this helps!

Clay is correct, it is very likely that you need to go through the matching process and then your account will line up fine. You can find full instructions for the matching process in the Moneydance 2010 user guide, which is located here.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance,
