I started out with MD and
checkbook the same balances. I entered all my entries for the 1st
of September. My checkbook balance ended up $370.00 less then MD. I
deleted all the entries and reentered again and now I'm 905.82 off.
Without question I've checked all entries and all is OK. This has
happened in previous months and I thought it might be me but I
can't find anything wrong with my addition and subtraction unless
it is my adding machine. I've added/subtracted the error amount to
make everything balance but there seems to be something wrong
somewhere and has happened a number of times. Any suggestions where
the problem is?

Richard Levandowskitag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/3219642009-09-13T16:35:09Z2009-09-13T16:35:09ZBalance keeps changing

Hi Richard

I am sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner. I am something
of a loss as to what to suggest. I have a very high level of
confidence that moneydance is not making an error when summing the
transactions in your account. The algorithm foe calculating the
balance of an account is simple and we would be recieving a great
many complaints if this were not functioning correctly. One thought
is that the initial balance for your account in Moneydane is not
set correctly. Go intot he transaction register for the account in
question and Select "Edit Account" from the Acounts menu. Please
make use that the "initial balance" value is set to the correct
balance for the date that you started using Moneydance.

Sincerely

months ago, when doing a reconciliation, the balance showed as
being about £500 out. I have checked back to January 2008 and
the error is from prior to this date. This is impossible because,
as I said, it was functioning correctly until September this year.
I am totally at a loss but don't want to have to input all my
statements again from 2004 to present in order to correct this. It
has had the same effect on all of the accounts that my wife and I
are tracking in MD although I have only checked back in one account
to try to find the cause.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Archie Ferriertag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/3219642009-11-02T03:43:02Z2009-11-02T03:43:03ZBalance keeps changing

Archie, is it possible that you mis-entered the date of a recent
transaction?

Frank Hampeltag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/3219642009-11-02T14:12:38Z2009-11-02T14:12:38ZBalance keeps changing

Archie

The most likely cause is that you have inadvertently added
deleted or edited a transaction with a prior data. If you have a
backup file you could check against that and see if you can
determine when the unwanted change occured.

I am not sure what you mean by "It has had the same effect on
all of the accounts that my wife and I are tracking in MD although
I have only checked back in one account to try to find the cause."
Are you saying that all accounts are $500 off?

Thanks for your response. I don't think this problem could have
been caused by entering data incorrectly as it has affected three
savings accounts and two credit card accounts. The amounts that the
final balance is out by differs from one account to another and the
error goes back more than a month despite the account having been
previously reconciled. In the case of my current (checking) account
I have traced back a couple of years and the error exists then. It
is not possible that the error could have been made this far back
as I have always been able to reconcile this account. When I
restore from a back-up the error still exists.

One possibility is that you might have deleted an account that
you were no longer using. Doing so would have deleted all
transactions that were assiocated with that account and would
change the balance on other accounts even if they were
reconciled.

How old is the backup file your restored from. If you try an
older one is the problem still present?

Sincerely

I have not deleted any accounts since I started using MD several
years ago. This appears to be something that occurred totally
spontaneously.
