Duplicate entries shown under "Similar Payees"

I have recently upgraded from MoneyDance 2010 to 2011r2 (799), Java 1.6.0_21 on Windows 7.

Downloaded transactions often show duplicate entries under similar payees, so I am being asked to choose between many identical choices. Can this be fixed?

See attached screenshot. Thanks!

    Hi Brett,

If you could copy and paste the version information from your error console, that would be very helpful. You can open the error console by going to the Help menu and clicking on the Console Window option. Just copy and paste the first four lines of the console window here.

    Starting Moneydance 2011r2 (799)
    Settings Folder: D:.moneydance
    OS: Windows 7 6.1 x86
    Java: 1.6.0_21 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)

(Well, that's what the console says, but actually I have 64-bit Windows.)

    Thanks!

    Hi Brett,

The sidebar listing you are seeing is because you have multiple transactions with the same payee. You can simply select any of the transaction to match the similar payees.

Thanks Jessica, but from my perspective as a user, this explanation doesn't make sense to me.

Maybe I'm missing something, but if nothing is shown to distinguish those transactions, how do I know which one I'm choosing? And what difference does it make?

I thought I was selecting which description and category to assign to the new transaction, and I find it confusing and unnecessary to have a choice of several identical options.

    Hi Brett,

You're right that it would be less confusing to have less duplicates. I have created a ticket for this issue. The ticket is attached to this discussion. By posting in this discussion your interest in the ticket has been registered. This is equivalent to voting for it. We'll let you know once it's been implemented.

Thanks again for your suggestion, and thanks for your interest in Moneydance!

I vote to fix this too. It makes me crazy to see the same payee and all the same data under the similar payee section.

I think this issue was fixed for a few years, but the duplicates are occurring again in Moneydance 2017.8 and 2017.10. Thanks!

    just a user,

Trying to understand. Under the Preferences tab, then Network tab, how do you have the "Only match downloaded transactions when they are at most ??? days apart"

I would think anytime you download transactions, MD is going to look for any matching transactions in that account within those days that have the exact Description name.

I've tried "Default" and 21 days for the downloaded-transactions setting. Same behavior either way. I don't think the "Similar Payees" list has any connection with that setting.

I know this is an old thread, but ...

Moneydance 2023.1 has the same behavior that I complained about in 2011.

And it still drives me crazy. Can someone please help resolve this issue? Thanks!

just a user - I'm going back to mhoggie's question. I'm assuming you have identical transactions over multiple days (like you buy coffee for 3.50 from Starbucks twice a week) - yes I see Utilities which suggests monthly.

And, yes, I'm also going to his preference question - I set mine to 90 days but could not get "Similar Payee" duplicates within an account...

That said, you've been using MD for years - I'm not going to my live data to test this like I just did, but is it possible you have "Similar Payees" across accounts (i.e. you changed the account you paid from over time) - and this would assert your comment that the days to look doesn't relate to similar payees (if across accounts)?

Just some thoughts that you may have already had over the years.

Also, have you tried automatically merge transactions? (I honestly don't think this applies - but merge/confirm are similar items).

Today I've changed the setting to "Only match downloaded transactions when they are at most 45 days apart" but I don't think it changed anything. It was previously set for the default setting. And I think that setting is only relevant for for "Merge Choices," not for "Similar Payees."

Ideally the "Similar Payees" feature should work (without showing duplicates) for daily transactions, annual transactions, or anywhere in between.

just a user - well, I've tried quite a few times, but I can't get Similar Payees to duplicate, but I don't have 12 years of MD background in my database.

I do have 35+ years of data, but I think MD "learns" whether correctly or incorrectly what it considers similar payees to be.

This comment was split into a new private discussion: Duplicate entries shown under "Similar Payees"

Still happening frequently in Version 2023.3, thanks.

For example, the attached screenshot shows "Discover Card Auto-pay" 4 times, and "Planet Fitness" twice. (And this transaction had nothing to do with Network Solutions, so I have no idea why that is shown.)
