Can you let us know what version of Moneydance you are using? Catalina has a ridiculous number of prompts to ask you whether individual apps to be able to access specific folders. Can you remember if it's possible that any such prompts were displayed when you first started Moneydance and the answer you selected?

I'll try to research how to ensure an app has access to any specific folder.

I found that if I launch MoneyDance on the .moneydance file then it works. It doesn’t work to just launch the Moneydance application and have it open the last used file automatically, which is what I had been doing. Therefore, I’m ok for now but it would be nice to have the previous behaviour back at some point so I can put Moneydance back on the Dock, at the moment I have put a symbolic link to the .moneydance file on my Desktop to make it easier to launch.

Can anyone please help? Since I upgraded to Catalina this happens -

When trying to open Moneydance I only get an error message telling me 'to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime'.

I'm then taken to Apple support where the only available download is Java for OS X 2017-001.

Having downloaded, at the 'Select a Destination' for install, I get another error message stating it 'can't be installed on this disk'. (i.e. Macintosh HD) 'A newer version of this package is already installed'.

Hence, no Moneydance!

I haven't been able to identify this 'newer version' on my 2015 Mac but that might be me of course.

The ability to support older versions of Moneydance on newer versions of MacOS was lost some time ago.

With the various problems reported over time, the minimum versions supported (and that work) appear to be:

2017.6 10.13 High Sierra
2017.8 10.14 Mojave

Based on the fact that Java 8 is now end of life (which is what MD 2017 uses) and I suspect that no significant testing would have been undertaken on any earlier release I would expect the initial version to be supported with Catalina would be 2019.3.

I would not expect any version of Moneydance prior to 2017.8 to work correctly based on previous reported issues but I also would not be expecting any official support for later versions of MD2017.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477056452019-10-11T14:14:30Z2019-11-02T10:18:59ZProblem after upgrading to Catalina

Hi Maddy, if I change it to “Open this Window” then when I select my moneydance file on the right hand side I get the error pop-up.
Thanks for your helpful response. I suspected that my running an 'ancient' MD version might be the issue.

I don't mind buying the latest MD to run with 10.15 Catalina but I have another query. Will I be able to continue with my accounts, where I left off? That is to say, have my back-ups been saved in such a way that can I import them into the latest MD?

My reason for asking is that i imported ACCOUNTS.qif onto an old Mac as a potential temporary fix BUT the most recent transactions were from 2016 - not much help.

Going back to the new Mac, I do have a file ''root.mdinternal-2019-10-04' within the folder ACCOUNTS.moneydance/checkpt.

Is this (most recent) file actually a back-up and if so, will it import into MD2019?

Many thanks (again)

I have had this exact same issue and now InfineKind want me to spend £25.00 to upgrade to the new version when they have made their app, which I have used for many many years, non-compatible with the new Mac Operating system?

I have yet to find a customer service contact number or email address to raise this as a complaint, as my previous Key only allows a discounted rate....

I'm appalled.. Irony is, without moneydance, I can't see if I can afford it!!!

Barbara Dyertag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477056452019-10-13T13:42:32Z2019-11-02T10:18:59ZProblem after upgrading to Catalina

I am no support staff, just a user.
Hi Barara.

Moneydance can’t predict changes that may happen to a operating system in the future, so they can’t deliberately make their app non-compatible with future operating systems.

Its Apple that have made changes to their Mac operating systems with the release of Catalina that made older versions of Moneydance non-compatible. They have done it before, they will do it in the future. They don’t look to support older apps unlike Microsoft do with Windows.

So, if you want to be appalled at anyone, be appalled at Apple.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477056452019-10-13T14:19:31Z2019-11-02T10:18:59ZProblem after upgrading to Catalina

From: sprimost

The file root.mdinternal-2019-10-04 is a point in time copy of your data. It is like a rollback point that the software itself can go back to, but it is usable.

By its location I assume that "ACCOUNTS" is the name of your data set i.e. the name you know the Moneydance data by, this is assumed since the folder name is ACCOUNTS.moneydance and the naming convention that is used is significant to the software. Within this folder there should be a file named root.mdinternal this is the file we would normally expect your data to be in.

If it exists you should, within moneydance, be able to select the folder ACCOUNTS.moneydance and tell Moneydance to "open" this and it should have your data, tell Moneydance to open this do not open it in your file explorer.

The difference at this level is that the explorer only knows it as a folder that contains other files and folders, but Moneydance understands that this name means this is the top level of a data tree that contains Moneydance data, so selecting open in Moneydance itself tells Moneydance the name of the data set and the starting reference point for it to find all the other data that makes up the data set.

If the file does not exist or does not have the data take a copy of the file root.mdinternal-2019-10-04 and place it in the ACCOUNT.moneydance folder and rename it to root.mdinternal and try to open that in Moneydance.

Obviously before doing anything you should take a backup of the data tree and put it in a safe place.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477056452019-10-19T13:41:05Z2019-11-02T10:18:59ZProblem after upgrading to Catalina

Hi dwg,

Many thanks for your comprehensive advice. I'm pleased to say that my worst fears (i.e. no usable back-up files) weren't realised. After purchasing, downloading and entering the licence key for the latest version, Moneydance DID find a usable back-up data set. So, it appears I'm back in 'business' - phew!

Thanks for explaining the operation behind the whole issue and I'll now definitely keep an eye on those MacOS and MD updates!
