Opening and Closing taking a long time

I have been using Moneydance for about 5 years. I'm at the point where it is almost unusable. The program takes 5-10 minutes to open. It also takes about 5 minutes to close and more and more frequently it will not close and I have to use Force Quit. I guess I am naive as to how I should be handling the file. Because I've been using it for so long I assume that somewhere I am overloading the memory. How do I fix this?

    Hi Bob,

    Can you state the version that you are using (Help > About Moneydance).

    There have been significant changes to the way that txn files are handled in later versions of Moneydance. If you have an older version, you may be eligible for a free upgrade, or a 50% discount, depending on the version that you purchased (and whether you've already upgraded for free in the past).

    I think that It would be worth it to try MD 2019. As per the Blog:

    "Since 2015 Moneydance has stored every change made to your files. While these changes didn’t take much space, they did result in many small files that could slow down the opening and closing of Moneydance. Moneydance 2019 will automatically compress and consolidate the older history in your data which can reduce file size by a decent amount, but the most significant change is probably the improvement of opening and closing your files.

    Thanks for the help. I thought I was up to date on versions but somehow I was using 2017.10 instead of 2019.3. Updating the version really seems to have solved the issue.

    Any suggestions for how to get the quotes and Exchange Rates Extension working better? I have about 20 stocks that I like to get updated prices for. At one time this worked quickly, under a minute. But now it takes about 15-20 minutes to update.

    Alpha Vantage have deliberately slowed down the process for obtaining quotes. There is nothing Moneydance can do about that.

    If the Quote and exchange rate updater does not work well for you try the free third-party Quote Loader. Both of the sources in the Quote Loader have good coverage of worldwide securities.
