Please ignore my support request. I have found where the archives are and loaded up the last one. Also taken a backup!

The only thing is now the quote loader isn’t working, but I can work around that.

Thanks

You have been sent this message because you recently opened a help request with The Infinite Kind.

John Hogg Gmailtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477625812019-10-24T13:37:31Z2019-10-24T13:37:31ZLost all data

Hi John,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

I'm glad to hear that you've managed to find your archives. However, this is just for your reference:
Moneydance creates automatic backup files. A backup file will be created each time you close your file until the set number exist, then each file will be updated in turn.
If these files are stored in the default location, they're accessible from Moneydance via Help --> Show Backup Folder.

To amend the backup file settings, choose Moneydance --> Preferences, then select the 'Backups' tab, as outlined in this article. In this window you can amend the backup location, and choose the maximum number of backups to be stored.

You could amend the backup location, so the automatic backup files are sent elsewhere. For example, you could choose an external drive, or a shared folder location like Dropbox. This will ensure your data is accessible from another system, even if you were to encounter complete computer failure.

You can also create manual backup files whenever you want, and store these files anywhere. To create a manual backup file, choose File --> Export Backup. This will create a .moneydancearchive backup file - the same format as the auto backup files.

If you use an iOS or Android mobile device, or if you have another computer, you could also setup syncing. By doing this, your data will be accessible on the other device/computer and can be retrieved if you encounter any problems. We do recommend you don't reply solely on the sync as a backup, so I'd recommend you amend the backup location first. Let me know if you want to also setup syncing and I'll send the steps you need.

Finally, can you check you're running the latest version of the Quotes and Exchange Rates extension? To do this, choose Extensions --> Manage Extensions. The latest version of the extension is v.1024. You should see an 'Update' button if you're using an older version, or remove the extension and re-install.

Can you also check which version and build of Moneydance you are running?
To do this, open Moneydance and select Help --> About Moneydance (or Moneydance --> About Moneydance on a Mac) where the version and build number will be displayed.

Moneydance previously obtained rates using Yahoo, but unfortunately they stopped supporting downloads to third party applications in the last year or so. Since then we've been trying to locate other services we can include, but few are free and reliable. We currently use Alphavantage and IEX Trading.

Alphavantage worked well for some time, but recently changed their services and introduced a premium membership. This has limited the number of downloads per minute for free accounts, so you may find the updates are slower.
We've included IEX trading as another source for updating rates. This website includes a list of eligible symbols IEX trading uses - https://iextrading.com/trading/eligible-symbols/

Recently, a knowledgeable Moneydance customer and developer (Mike Bray) has created a third party extension called 'Quotes Loader'. This extension doesn't adhere to the same limitations as the program and is able to connect with Yahoo. You can find more information about the extension in this thread(the latest free third-party Quote Loader is post 205) from the public discussion board.
Download the PDF attached to post 205 and have a read.

To get an overview take a look at the YouTube video by using the link on page one of the PDF.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if you have further questions or need any assistance.

Would you also mention (or confirm) that a ctrl-S will also save to a
backup file in the same manner as closing the file. There use to be an
option on the File menu to do this, but it got removed many versions ago?

Thanks

Interested to see what support come back with.

As far as I know an automatic Save of the data set is performed about every 20 seconds.
Ctrl S forces a Save of the Data set and if syncing a sync.
It does not perform an auto backup as set under PREFERENCES - BACKUPS.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477625812019-10-24T20:50:44Z2019-10-24T20:50:44ZLost all data

I'm a fellow user.

I would be extremely surprised if CTRL-S initiated a backup.

This is a keyboard short cut to force a save i.e. flush any unwritten data from memory to disk and as Derek said by extension a sync as there is now extra on disk data.

Backups on the other hand are created either on demand or by exiting the software.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477625812019-10-25T00:48:17Z2019-10-25T00:48:17ZLost all data

From: sprimost

Not support.

My observation (and some hard knocks in the rare occasion that a LINUX
system forces an emergency reboot) is that it periodically writes out
the sync data as we all understand. An exit from MD flushes out
unwritten data from memory to disk, i.e., the transactions entered since
the start of MD. A CTRL-S performs the same flush without exiting the
software.

A CTRL-S will display on the bottom of the screen (or desktop) in quick
succession: "Finished writing data" followed by "Finished writing sync
data". This is not a backup data-set. but actually the "master data set"
being written. I have no knowledge whether it writes the backup copy of
the "master data set" that is done by the exit. My observation is that
it does not...too quick!

The exit as noted writes both the "master data set and a backup copy of
the "master data set". Obviously, this is different that the "File-->
Export Backup". which, to me, is the "when everything else fails, do a
restore". It is also handy to use when you want to experiment with
different features of the experimental versions, or doing something that
might break the "production environment".

I think that is what derekkent23 is saying. And I agree with dwg.

It is particularly useful to me, since I tend to keep MD open for over a
week, while updating checking and other accounts on a daily basis; I
would hate to lose up to a week's worth of work. and too impatient to
wait for MD to start. I mourned the passing of the menu option.
