HI Clarence.

You are right to be nervous about the warning.
The way the Moneydance 2019 data set is constructed and the frequent access needed to small transaction files means that eventually your data set will become corrupted if you store it in the cloud. This did not apply to 2015 and earlier versions.
Move your data set back to the default location on your hard drive as show under HELP – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER.
I assume you and your wife have Dropbox Client installed on your hard drive in the standard location? That is, you can see the Dropbox folder on your C drive.
When you sync using Moneydance’s internal sync engine you have a primary computer and as many secondary computers as you want. On the primary computer set up syncing under FILE – SYNCING. I suggest using Dropbox Folder. One a secondary computer you sync to the primary computer under FILE – NEW – OPEN SYNCED FILE.

If you need detailed instructions just post.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477729392019-10-27T13:44:29Z2019-10-27T13:44:30ZSyncing Moneydance between users via Dropbox

Many thanks, Derek. Unfortunately, this is what I’ve done and it doesn’t work. Could this be because my wife and I have separate Dropbox accounts, with a shared folder for Moneydance (amongst others) and I am syncing first from her Mac to the shared folder on her Dropbox account and then trying to sync from the same shared folder, but onto my Mac and via my Dropbox account? Do we need to login to Dropbox as the same person (annoying if so!)?

Not tried this but in principle it should work.

When you set up syncing on your primary computer it should set up a folder called “.moneydancesync” in the root of your Dropbox folder. Sign into your Dropbox account and highlight “.moneydancesync” and then SHARE. Once this folder is being shared it should appear in the route of your wife’s Dropbox folder. Now set up syncing on the secondary computer FILE – NEW – OPEN SYNCED FILE.

As I say I haven’t tried this but if it does not work there is another method.
Let me know what happens.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477729392019-10-27T15:11:37Z2019-10-27T15:11:39ZSyncing Moneydance between users via Dropbox

On 27 Oct 2019, at 14:46, derekkent23 > wrote:

//Thanks Derek. I had already done that but it’s possible I missed a step so I shall try again later. For now, any idea why the .moneydancesync folder should appear in Dropbox online but not appear in the local Dropbox folder in Finder? I’ve done a complete reinstall without being able to get that folder visible except in the online version.

I am not a Mac user but its my understanding that folders starting with “.” are sometimes hidden.
Try in your Finder window, typing CMD-Shift-G and then pasting ~/Dropbox/.moneydancesync/ into the box to unhide.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477729392019-10-27T18:08:11Z2019-10-27T18:08:11ZSyncing Moneydance between users via Dropbox

On 27 Oct 2019, at 15:19, derekkent23 > wrote:

// Please reply above this line Thanks for this, Derek. I am afraid it doesn’t work. Nor does using the "Shared Folder" command and treating Dropbox as a shared folder (which it is, but you see what I mean…). Nor does Dropbox Connection as opposed to Dropbox Folder. There is clearly some permission blockage that the Moneydance people don’t know about or haven’t explained in their online guide.

I sync the file from my wife’s Mac to Dropbox, according to the instructions. The Dropbox folder it syncs to is shared with my Dropbox account. On my Mac, I go to File - new - open synced file and, no matter which route I take, the synced file from my wife’s Mac does not appear anywhere. You mentioned another method; I’d love to hear it. others, i will be forced to revert to keeping the full file in Dropbox, though your warning worries me.

Is this a OS Catalina glitch?

Many thanks for the trick to unhide folders. Why do they make these things so obscure?!

Other in the past have synced between different Dropbox Accounts using Moneydances internal sync engine, but it’s not well documented, so don’t give up yet.

Can I get confirmation on a few things before we move on?
Using the Dropbox Folder Method.
Can you see the “.moneydancesync” folder in the root of the Dropbox Folder on your C drive?
Have you opened your Dropbox account online and shared the “.moneydancesync” folder with your wife?
Can your wife see the “.moneydancesync” folder in the root of the Dropbox Folder on her C drive.

When I say root it would be dropbox.moneydancesync\ not in a sub folder.
Inside the “.moneydancesync” folder should be a alphanumeric folder.

Hope this helps

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477729392019-10-27T19:18:32Z2019-10-27T19:18:33ZSyncing Moneydance between users via Dropbox

On 27 Oct 2019, at 18:40, derekkent23 > wrote:

Hi Derek, I think you may have cracked it, with maybe a little assist from me (after many a mistake!) I noticed that there were two .moneydance folders in both of our Dropboxes, one marked as (1), and curiously, they had opposite contents in them, so alphanumeric files AB and C were in the .moneydance folder on my wife’s Dropbox, and in the .moneydance(1) folder in mine, and vice versa. So I deleted them all on both Dropboxes and started again, first letting it set up open in my wife’s Dropbox, sharing that with my account, shutting it down, opening mine, etc. Eventually, this meant that the Dropbox Folder route seems to have worked. I guess it just muddled itself by creating two folders in the two Dropboxes...

Fingers crossed, anyway. I can’t thank you enough for your help. You’ve been a life-saver (perhaps a bit OTT but my blood pressure was through the roof!)

Got there in the end, that the main thing.

Don't know if your are aware but when you are using the Moneydance's syncing engine you can have the same data set open on yours and your wife's computers at the same time. Add a transaction on one computer and within 60 seconds it should appear on the other. And don't forget you can sync to phones.
