Hi Ratnesh.

You don’t state the version and build of Moneydance you are running, e.g. 2019.4(1892) or your computers operating system so it makes it difficult to give you a tailored answer.

Assuming its Moneydance 2019 the default location for data sets is to be found under HELP (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER.
A data set is a folder not a file containing other folders and files. The naming convention of a data set is yourdatasetname.moneydance. When you open Moneydance it will either open in the “Welcome to Moneydance” window with the data set name listed on the right or in a data set where you can use FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – OPEN. If your data set is not listed use OPEN OTHER to navigate to your data set. If you still can’t find your data set search for a folder with an extension “.moneydance”.

Alternatively, did you use Moneydance backup. The following explains how Moneydance backups work.

Moneydance 2019 has two methods for making a backup.
The backup location can be found under HELP (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – SHOW BACKUP FOLDER. In both cases you can select the backup location and as such it is good practice to set the location on a cloud server such as Dropbox, in case your hard drive fails.

Manual backup. A manual backup can be made under FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – BACKUP EXPORT. The file naming convention is yourdatasetname-yyyymmdd-tttt.moneydancearchive

Automatic backup is set under FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – PREFERENCES – BACKUPS. Auto backup makes a backup every time you close Moneydance. Moneydance only keep the last auto backup of the day, overwriting any previous auto backups for that day. You can set the number of backups to be kept. When this number is exceeded the oldest backup is deleted. The file naming convention is yourdatasetname.yyyy-mm-dd.moneydancearchive

When you FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – RESTORE FROM BACKUP you do not overwrite your existing data set. This is in case you later find you need access to your old data set A new data set is created with the naming convention – from manual backup yourdatasetname-yyyymmdd-tttt.moneydance the date time code taken from the backup file - from auto backup yourdatasetname (plus at number) e.g. yourdatasetname 2.moneydance The default data set location can be found under HELP (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER. You can delete old data sets you no longer want. You can rename a restored data set with Moneydance closed as you would any other folder provided you retain “.moneydance” extension. A data set is a folder not a file containing other folders and files. When you open Moneydance it will open in the “Welcome to Moneydance” window with the data set name listed on the right.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/478281222019-11-11T20:57:50Z2019-11-11T20:57:52ZI seem to have lost the Data

Hi Derek

You were very useful last time I had a problem.

I use a Microsoft Surface. The Version number is below, I went to help and about. Says Version 2014.5. I thought I was on the latest, I paid last year for an upgrade.

[cid:image003.jpg@01D598D2.9E634E40]

I then went to Document Folders and can see the folders there. See print screen below. But when I open Money dance I can’t seem to open the folder or don’t know where to click to
Connect to the data.

[cid:image005.jpg@01D598D2.9E634E40]

Help please.

Hi Ratnesh

Your screen shot seems to indicate that the Moneydance data sets are in the default location.

When you open Moneydance it will either open in the “Welcome to Moneydance” window with the data set name listed on the right or in a data set where you can use FILE – OPEN, again your data sets should be listed.
Can you confirm if Moneydance opens in the welcome window or in a data set and can you see your data sets listed.

If they are listed but nothing happens when you click on one of the data sets read on.

Your screen shot shows that 2014 has not been registered, which seems strange. Is it possible that you did upgrade to 2017 or 2019 and have two versions of Moneydance on your computer?
If the data sets you have found were converted from 2014 by 2017/2019 or created by 2017/2019 that would explain why they will not open. The data format is different between 2014 and 2017/2019.

Can you find the email you would have been sent if you upgraded from 2014? If you can’t find it try using the Lost key box at https://infinitekind.com/purchase Use the email address you would have used to upgrade.
Then enter the key in the upgrading box on the same page to see if the key is valid for 2019.

If it is then you need to open your data sets with 2019 not 2014. But first make a copy of all your data set folders and store them in a safe place. If necessary downloading a copy of 2019 from https://infinitekind.com/download-moneydance-personal-finance-software
And installing it.

Note you can always re-install 2014 from https://infinitekind.com/download_2014
But remember once a data set has been opened in 2017/2019 it is converted and cannot be opened in 2014.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/478281222019-11-11T22:09:59Z2019-11-11T22:09:59ZI seem to have lost the Data

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi Ratnesh

Meant to say, the screen shots seems to indicate you have managed to open the data set “The Cottage” in 2014?
I thought you could not open any data sets?

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/478281222019-11-11T22:20:15Z2019-11-11T22:20:16ZI seem to have lost the Data

Derek,

I think you may be right i.e.) upgraded but have two versions. I removed the icon from the task bar and searched for Mondaydance again and clicked that, and this time my data was there. Went to About and now have Version as the print screen shows below. Version 2015.8 (1372).

I think I may have only updated to this version.

Yes I manged to open THE COTTAGE as this was the only one that showed up, it’s an old Data Set.

I believe my licence details are:-
Your license key is:
B319053-FB7B908E

Do you think I’m OK now?

Hi Ratnesh

Yes, you should be OK but you need to install your key as the screen shot shows 2015 is unregistered. See https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/purchasing-and-upgrading/regi...

You may want to un-install 2014.

If your key was purchased for 2015 then you are entitled to a free upgrade to 2017 from https://infinitekind.com/download_2017

Your key would also entitle you to a 50% discount for a upgrade to 2019 see upgrading box at https://infinitekind.com/purchase

Up to you.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23
