Transactions definitely shouldn't be deleting themselves. Are you able to provide any more details? Were these transactions all of a certain type, the same category, date, etc? Any more details you are able to give could help us start to narrow this down.
They were all to Paypal. I was editing the category field. I had
reconciled three months of our current account, in which were a number
of entries to Paypal; I tend to initially enter those as 'misc' and then
search the Paypal site to identify each transaction correctly. I had
finished my initial entries on 13th Feb, and on the 14th was doing this
editing. I was part way through doing this, when 'something' happened -
I must have clicked in the wrong part of the screen or something, but
the next transaction - another Paypal - disappeared and when I looked
more closely, all the following transactions to Paypal had also
disappeared. To make matters more confusing, I looked at the archive
file from 13th and they had also disappeared. Date ranging from 16th
Dec to 5th Feb - and 29 of them.
I cannot be sure but I think this means our balance in Moneydance is now
wrong - i.e. the transactions have been fully deleted and the balance
Yes, I can re-enter these transactions, but I would really like to know
what I did so I can avoid this problem in the future. Also, if it is
something that anyone could do in error, maybe you can close that
problem in a subsequent update. Our use of Moneydance started in Dec
2008, when Quicken stopped supporting personal usage. We are currently
running version 2017.2 (1597)
If you have any trouble finding your Home Library folder you can open Finder and hold down the option key while selecting the Go menu and the Library folder option should occur or you can open Finder and select Go -> Go to Folder and copy and paste in the following:
This should pull up your local Library folder.
If you're using Windows, it should be located under your login directory at:
C:\Documents and Settings\(yourusername)\.moneydance\errlog.txt
Depending on your version of Windows
If you're using Linux it should be located in your home folder at:

It's difficult to speculate on what could have happened. One possibility is that the transactions are still there, just filtered out of the active view. Make sure you have the "All" button active at the top of your register, as some of the other options could hide some transactions.
Another possibility is that these transactions were still unconfirmed, and you have the split register view active. You can turn this on or off by clicking on the 'box' icon just to the right of the New Transaction button.
Were you selecting all these transactions at once to alter them together? What you describe sort of sounds like applying a Batch Change operation incorrectly, like you moved all of them to another account. If you search for them, do you find them?
If none of that helps, maybe try reentering a few to see if the problem repeats, and if it does, send us your errlog.txt file. I'm trying to think of some explanation for them not appearing in your earlier backup files, but I don't see what could have caused that, as Moneydance wouldn't change those files, even if something went wrong with the one you have open.

I don't think any of your suggestions are applicable here. I do keep
the "All" button on; I was editing them one-by-one, and they were in
fact all confirmed from when I had entered them with a category "misc"
the previous day.
I have now entered them again, and will wait to see if the problem
re-occurs. if it does, I will catch the error log - that hadn't
occurred to me - and come back to you.
