We are sorry to hear about the problem you have encountered.

Many customers have reported this issue with the American Express connection during the weekend.
Can you try to connect with Amex again, and let us know if the problems persist?

To do this, you'll need to force clear the current connection information for your bank in Moneydance. I'm sending a file called 'remove_one_service_2017.py' that will help do that.

Before proceeding, take a manual backup via File --> Export Backup.

To use the .py file, first save it to your computer and then follow these steps:

In Moneydance, select Window --> Python Scripting (Choose 'MoneyBot' if you're using the 2019 version).

In the window that opens, select 'Open Script' then navigate to the .py file wherever you saved it on your system.

Select 'Run' to execute the file.

You will be asked to select which connection you want to clear. Choose your bank, and click OK. You'll get a confirmation message when the connection has been removed. Close the window when done.

Set up the connection to your bank like normal choosing the "New Connection" button. Since all of your settings have been cleared, you should get the most recent connection information for your bank.

Hopefully, that will work. If it doesn't, let me know and we'll continue troubleshooting.

Deleting and restoring the service does not work and gives the "Forbidden" 403 error code.

This is a security update by AMEX and they suggest that folks who use Q to do essentially the same thing that MD asks. Delete the connection and reconnect. However it seems that they have added something in the reactivation and not told the MD folks about it. It will take some time and effort to get it running again.

You can threaten or actually go back to running Q again but you trade the advantages of a large corporation that can get AMEX to pay attention to the indifference, security risk and frankly crappy software that they put out. Personally I would rather stick a fork in my eye, but YMMV.

(Really, really NOT IK support so I can talk like this, don't blame them)

sthtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/481110542020-02-25T04:18:44Z2020-02-25T04:30:28ZUnable to download transactions from American Express

This thread might get more attention in the online banking area... not sure, but it seems more appropriate...

The NC bank bit got a lot of action there. I'd assume AMEX would definitely get attention.

And yes, AMEX isn't working for me either at this time.
And it is working for my still mirrored Quicken ledger, and I had to do absolutely nothing to have it working - no resets, it just is working.

I'm not defending Quicken nor condemning MD - just passing along information.

Oh, and Quicken is no longer Intuit, so I assume they have MUCH less import and impact to major institutions now, which may be why we are seeing changes that no longer consider financial software products - the banks now only care about the screaming from their CLIENTS when changes are made, not Quicken.

Unfortunately, other customers are reporting the same issue and as you suggest, it's likely that American Express are making some changes to their system.
I've filed a ticket in our ticketing system regarding this issue, so the developers will be looking into it.

For the time being, without Direct Connect, you are still able to easily import your data into the program. The best way to get your transactions into Moneydance is to use a web browser to download files from your bank's web site.

We'd recommend you download using the OFX or QFX file format if available. If not, use the QIF file format. (These files are sometimes referred to as Quicken or MS Money files). You can import the files to Moneydance using File --> Import.
The steps for manually importing your data are outlined in this article from the knowledge base.

Thank you for your patience and sorry for the inconvenience.

I don’t know why but my passwords and login got “garbled”

I ended up with 3 different passwords for Moneydance and others stopped working.

I found I had to reinitialize logins for most of my accounts - and then, they would continue working - at least for the couple of days that have passed.

My Bank was about the worst

irazismetag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/481110542020-02-26T02:29:05Z2020-02-26T02:29:05ZUnable to download transactions from American Express

Looks like my Passwords have been scrambled! My login’s have all been reset - like putting dice in a cup and throwing them down.. What happened?? Could it be a computer problem?

Moneydance is the only file I use, add to and continue to use.. Its not like a book..

It can be compared to a spreadsheet you update. I hav lots of those and they don’t exhibit the same problems Moneydance does..

Your computer is probably fine.

What you probably did, given two different accounts, is choose the same account at Amex for both of your MD accounts as opposed to picking one for each.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/481110542020-02-27T04:58:20Z2020-02-27T04:58:20ZUnable to download transactions from American Express

suddenly resolved for me, thanks everybody for help!

Kirill
