"I can get that report," What report?

For category reporting you would normally use an Income and Expense report and if you want to see individual items you would choose the Detailed version of this report.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483532312020-05-21T22:34:40Z2020-05-21T22:34:41ZTransaction Reports have rows with account and category switched

The original report was "Transaction Filter".

Ok, I see how "Income and Expenses, Detailed" could get me those transactions. Unfortunately each category and subcategory are in a header and I will need to cut-paste it back to into each row, Also there is no filter so it will have every transaction for the whole year regardless of category. It will take an hour each time but I guess I can work with that, thanks. You may have saved the weekend!

The problem with the "Transaction Filter" report's "Include Sub-Accounts" checkbox (should say sub-categories?) is that the records for the root category are queried like a transaction, but the records in sub-categories are queried with the amount sign flipped and the account / category reversed. Then they are all listed together. That has to be a bug.

Of course I could just add a subcategory called "Household:Uncategorized" for all "Household" records so all results would be reversed in the same way.

jrosstag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483532312020-05-21T23:08:26Z2020-05-21T23:08:26ZTransaction Reports have rows with account and category switched

If you go to the bottom of the parameter screen in the Income and expense reports you can change it the By Individual and select only the categories you want reported on.

I'm not following you on how you are using the Transaction filter report, or on what your overall aim is.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483532312020-05-22T00:25:11Z2020-05-22T00:25:11ZTransaction Reports have rows with account and category switched

This is double entry bookkeeping and you are seeing both sides of a transaction, both from and account to a category and a category to an account. These are negative and opposite transactions. Make sure your filters are set for only the accounts you want.

sthtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483532312020-05-22T20:05:43Z2020-05-22T20:05:44ZTransaction Reports have rows with account and category switched

Thanks for your replies.

I want to dump all the transactions for last year that are in my "Household" category, or sub-categories under "Household" (like "Household:Electricity") into Excel. I want all transactions regardless of the account. That way I can sort and review items that may partially apply to my home office.
I would also use exports like this to sanity check my categories and review for errors. I did it in Quicken and Money before that, so its a biannual thing for me.

dwg:
I don't think I am looking at the same dialog as you are. I've attached a screenshot of what I see when I click "Edit" and I don't see "by individual", nor any way to supply more than one account or category except the "Include Sub-Accounts" option.

sth:
I'm aware of double entry accounting (dimmly!) but what I'm seeing does not seem to reflect two sides. I just set Account/Category to "Household" (a category) and checked Include Sub-Accounts because that is the only way to supply multiple categories that I can see.
The transactions from Household are displayed properly, those in sub-categories are shown in reverse/sign flipped, and I do not see matching transactions for the same date with values in the correct order.

Thanks again for your help!

jrosstag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483532312020-05-22T20:25:40Z2020-05-22T20:25:40ZTransaction Reports have rows with account and category switched

Based on what you've described, I'd suggest that the Income and Expenses, Detailed report may display the information you want. You're not seeing the options dwg suggested because your screenshot is for the setting for the Transaction Filter report. I've attached a screenshot of the settings window for the Income and Expenses, Detailed report. My mouse is over the By Individual button dwg mentioned, on the right side of the window just above the box that takes up the bottom third of the window. Once you click on that, that box will show all of your categories and subcategories. You can then choose just the ones you want to include in the report, which sounds like your Household category and every category under that.

I don't get doubled versions with Mac OS 10.11 and MD 2019.4 (1903)
But my transaction filter pages does not look quite like yours. You can also try the transactions report as well it is basically a simplified version of the filter.
If you look at Tools->Accounts do you see "Household" in that list, the difference between a category and an account is fairly subtle.

Note that your screen shot shows Account/Category as the drop down and mine only lists Account.

I get a reasonable report with the following:

sthtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483532312020-05-23T03:41:11Z2020-05-23T03:41:11ZTransaction Reports have rows with account and category switched

sth:
Yep that's how mine is set! I am on Windows 10, ver 2019.3 (1880)

I'm pretty sure there is a bug in the Transactions report for my version, but I did find a work around (below). Do you happen to have a mix of transactions categorized in the Household category as well as subcategories? If so do they look as you would expect?

Ethan:
Thanks, I see now the difference in the report dialogs. The Income and Expense report would contain the data I want, but since I want to sort it in Excel that would be a lot of manual work to copy and paste the section's header to every detail line.

My workaround was to move all transactions with category "Household" to a new category "Household:Misc". Now all the records are displayed the same way in the report and I got the job done.

I feel very strongly this report should be fixed. Can I submit a defect report somewhere, or is this it?

jrosstag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483532312020-05-23T23:19:31Z2020-05-23T23:19:31ZTransaction Reports have rows with account and category switched

That is odd that our versions are so close together but there are differences in the window labels. There may be a bug fix and you should try the latest preview version. Preview versions are quite stable and this one has been out for awhile. There is nothing in the change notes that would suggest a fix.

I have items in subcategories and don't think I have any just "household". But the report looks like I expect. It is weird that you only get some transactions reversed and I am wondering if you have confused accounts and categories in your database? Is there any consistency to those transactions "peppered" through your reports.

This is how to report a bug. It would help to show more data of exactly how the bug is triggered. If you can make a simple MD file that demonstrates it and attach it to this discussion it would certainly help. Or you can mark the discussion private (and it dissapears from all us users) and attach your actual data file. Ethan marked with the big orange bar above is the only official support person here.

sth
