Why does this Helpdesk system create new private tickets in error?

I've just noticed that I have accidentally created many new private tickets for help - sorry! This seems to be when I have replied by email to another user's problem (offering help), and the ticket system has created a new private issue from me. It's not every time; as 50% of the time it does properly append to the original ticket. So what is going on? I have just had to edit and close a lot of fake tickets. And of course, it means the original user is not getting the help responses they might of had. Has anyone else seen this? Is there a solution (other than updating directly on this web page)? Thanks
