I think I’ve seen this before and a reset relative currencies fix has been used. I have built this into my Toolbox extension for moneydance. If no other help is coming forward, and if you are on the latest MD (2021 build 3032) then you can try it AFTER A FULL BACKUP.

Download Toolbox from here:
https://yogi1967.github.io/MoneydancePythonScripts/

Unzip and you will have a Toolbox.mxt file

MD extensions. Manage extensions. Install from file. Select Toolbox. Click ok/install. Accept the signing message and install.

(If on a Mac ignore the two *.dylib messages and click ignore/bin if they appear)

Now set your currency to base
Menu extensions toolbox to run toolbox

Toolbox menu / advanced mode.

Button. Diagnose relative currencies.

Review the diagnostic. If you want to proceed then

Button. Fix relative currencies. Please say yet to perform a backup first....and accept the questions.

Restart moneydance

Let us know how you get on

As I say, do a complete backup first....

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489301182020-12-25T06:27:03Z2020-12-25T06:27:03ZChange base currency

PS Then carefully review moneydance data and ensure you are happy with everything. Try restarting again too and double checking. If you are not happy then of course you can restore back....

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489301182020-12-25T06:39:34Z2020-12-25T06:39:34ZChange base currency

Thanks Stuart.. a few notes.

First - before I attempted, I did an EXPORT backup - so that this is an independed backup from the regular ones made by moneydance. So that is done. The backups themselves are confusing -- as there appear to be three options in Moneydance.. but lets leave that aside..

The thing with the base currency change is -- when I go back to my earlier default of AED. It works perfectly fine. Restarted - and everything is as I need. I do remember that ( initially ) while trying to setup AED ( many MANY years ago ) I did have this problem of defaulting back to GBP.. but i guess I somehow managed it.

Refer the tool. I will give this a shot a little later.. as this is something I need to do.

One of the reasons I am trying to change is - some of the reports ( eg TRANSACTION FILTER - which is one of the few reports that allows grouping by ACCOUNTS ) will only provide a total in the base currency -- instead of doing the basic requirement of providing a total in the currency in which the account is created. So if my base currency is AED and my account is created in INR -- then I expect the report will list out the transactions, provide me a total in INR - and then optionally provide a conversion in the base currency AED.

I find Moneydance to be a great software.. but there are these areas that need fixing sooner - ideally in the Moneydance software itself.

RJrontag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489301182020-12-25T07:32:14Z2020-12-25T07:32:14ZChange base currency

Hi. Export backup is the right option. This is a complete dataset backup.

If this were me, I would turn sync off, and use the restore from backup option, using your new backup. This actually creates a new dataset with some numbers on the end of the name. Run the test in that. If all ok, then you can file open, your original dataset (no numbers on the end of the dataset name) and do the same again. Whatever happens your backups (called *.moneydancearchive) will be there.

FYI. The first button called diagnose currencies is harmless and read only. You can run this to view the diagnostics. Only the second button called fix relative currencies makes changes.

Once you’re finished turn sync back on.

Again, I’m not from support.......

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489301182020-12-26T22:27:58Z2020-12-26T22:27:58ZChange base currency

Hi. How did you get on?

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489301182020-12-28T17:16:26Z2020-12-28T17:16:26ZChange base currency

Hi,
I will be trying this out in a while only since I am moving country and
also need to get some reports before making any changes. The reports work
fine when i change currency. The problem is that it defaults to GBP after a
save.. so for now.. Ive got some reports prior to a save.

I sure will respond and keep you updated as I make this change.

Regards
Just wanted to let you know that the latest update appears to have sorted this problem - although I have not had the chance to delve into great detail. Moneydance now does stick to the new default currency that is selected.

RJrontag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489301182021-03-22T10:01:32Z2021-03-22T10:01:32ZChange base currency

Yes there was a major bug in the change base currency which I reported. It was fixed in a recent preview build and I have tested it’s working ok without crashing now.
