Moneydance crashing on start, MACOS 10.13.6 (17G14042)
I'm having a problem with Moneydance consistentlycashing on startup.
I'm running MACOS 10.13.6 (17G14042), and Moneydance is up to date.
I have tried a re-install and deleting various preferences, to no avail.
I have attached the crash report. Can anyone suggest a solution?

If you're using Mac OS X, it should be located at one of these locations within your Home folder:
~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt
or:
~/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt
If you have any trouble finding your Home Library folder, open Finder and select Go -> Go to Folder and and copy and paste in the following:
~/Library
This should pull up your local Library folder.
If you're using Windows, it should be located at:
C:\Users(yourusername).moneydance\errlog.txt
(not support, just a user)

The version is 2021 (2006), the latest available.

I'm a fellow user.
The error log is incomplete and not overly helpful.
I would suggest taking Moneydance down to the basics by renaming the config.dict file and then starting Moneydance and seeing the result.
As you're using Mac OS, it should be located at one of these locations within your Home folder:
~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/config.dict
or:
~/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/config.dict
If you have any trouble finding your Home Library folder you can open Finder and hold down the option key while selecting the Go menu and the Library folder option should occur or you can open Finder and select Go -> Go to Folder and copy and paste in the following:
~/Library
This should pull up your local Library folder.
Once you've found your config.dict file, close Moneydance and rename it (to something like config-org.dict, for example), then open Moneydance again and it will appear as though you've just installed Moneydance for the first time and may have to locate and open your data set again.
You can then check the operation of Moneydance.
If it works as it should you can continue using the new configuration file by while viewing your data file, choose Help --> Register Moneydance and input your license key.
If you run into any problems, you can simply close Moneydance and rename config-org.dict file back to config.dict and open Moneydance again to restore your original settings.

Thanks. I did that, and it crashes even faster now. New errlog included, in case it reveals anything to anyone.

Moneydance is not even completing its loading.
You are using High Sierra so that should be fine.
I'm thinking of trying with the previous major release, which uses a different version of Java in order to see if it loads.

I tried that; same result as the more recent version. Error log is identical.

Something else to try…..
In MacOS go to System Preferences –> Security & Privacy –> Files & Folders, unlock the padlock & make sure Moneydance is ticked & included. You may like to do the same under Full Disk Acccess.
Maybe that will help!

The failure is very early so I am thinking that the OS has to be involved somehow, or at least there is something outside of Moneydance involved

Nothing notable has changed (that I know of). I tried another java-based appl;ication (Processing 3) and it also crashed, so that indicates a Java related problem (Thanks for that suggestion). I don't really know how to troubleshoot that. I tried upgrading Java officially, and downgrading to one from Apple, with no improvements.
Also, regarding security suggestion by jeff_l, that option isn't available in my OS apparently.

I tried making another user account and Moneydance starts up ok there (hangs up on trying to sync to my dropbox file, put that's another story).

The EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGABRT) could indicate an issue with your machine....
One answer is to create a new profile, which in fact you have tried and it works. Therefore, you might have a dodgy setup, or Malware, or disk errors.
To try: Boot into safe mode:
- Be sure your Mac is shut down. - Press the power button. - Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone. - Hold it until you see the logon screen - Login and try moneydance

Reboot
Try removing Java from your computer completely.

Moneydance uses its own bundled version of Java so a system level Java should have no bearing on the problem as Moneydance does not use it.

I agree, but it’s worth eliminating that in case it’s somehow getting called, especially as other Java apps fail and also as a new profile works...

I am having the same problem.
I just upgraded MD to its new version (2021), it worked for 2 days, and now, it opens, but when I try to access my account it crashes...

Ok- I found some erratic disk errors, so I have rebuilt the system on a new disk.
Moneydance now starts up. I am trying to set it up with a sync file on dropbox. It gets to the point where it tries to do an initial sync ("this may take a while...") and then it takes a long while (30-45 minutes) before the system freezes up (can't force quit).
My mobile phone and my desktop computer sync to that file just fine.
Any ideas?

Have you verified that dropbox is installed, authenticated, and working?
Check your hidden dropbox folder. Do you have a folder called .moneydancesync ? (note the dot). If you don't, create this folder and try again.
Perhaps upload your errlog.txt file too..?

Dropbox is working correctly (although doesn't moneydance make its own authenticated connection?).
It's not getting far enough to generate an errlog file. The most recent attempts have simply led to indefinite waiting on initial sync window, not to the system hang.

Depends if you are using dropbox folders or dropbox connection..?
regardless, I would still install dropbox to test the connection, password, etc... Just my personal opinion..... (not support)

If I recall correctly there is a problem where Moneydance does not create the .moneydancesync folder in Dropbox and that you need to create this manually.

I finally solved it by copying my config.dict file from the working desktop computer to the laptop where I've been having the problem. The two systems store that file in different locations, but it seems to have helped it get over the problem.
