Been using Momeydance for years. I was on an iMac with Mojave OS. Had to reformat my hard drive while upgrading to Monterey OS but I have a backup of the documents folder. I found a very old Moneydance file ending in .moneydance in a Moneydance folder but cannot find the most recent one. I have upgraded to the latest Moneydance and was using the 2019 version before. Where would my recent Moneydance data file be?

Whilst you were wise to backup your Documents folder before reformatting your hard disk. Unfortunately, by default MD does not store its Data Set in the Documents folder on the Mac.

The program does allow you to easily store backups of your data anywhere you like. e.g. an external drive, USB thumb drive or the Cloud. So do you know if this was the case?

Were you using the Macs built in Time Machine backup software? Or were you syncing your data to another computer via Dropbox? If you were backing up elsewhere then recovering your most recent data should be straight forward?

If the answer is no to the above, then unfortunately your data would have been lost in the reformat.

    Fellow user.

I have backups using Carbon Copy to an external drive and a partial Time Machine backup. Where were the original and backups stored? In the Library folder? I see MD is now storing files in Library/Containers folder but I don’t have such a folder in my previous OS backups

Ah that’s great, I’m a fan of Carbon Copy Cloner.

In that case the easiest way to locate your Data is to let Mac OS Finder do it for you.

Try searching your Carbon Copy Cloner ext drive with something simple like “money” without the quotes. Hopefully, you will find your moneydance Data sets or your moneydance Archive files & you will be back in business.

I’m not finding anything other than a very old file. Don’t MD files go into a specific location? Is the extension something other than .moneydance. I see old files used the .md extension

You can read about The Default locations here:-

However, a general search with Mac OS Finder would find them wherever they were located.

If all you are finding are *.md files it sounds like you have not been very vigilant with your backup routines, as *.md files are from way back before your MD v 2019!

Moneydance moved from the .md file format to the .moneydance format between the 2011 and 2012 versions, so I doubt those files will be of any use.

Backup files for the last several versions end with the .moneydancearchive extension, although I think those would come up in a search that was made for anything including 'money' in it.

There is no other place Moneydance would be saving your files other than the default file locations, unless you moved your main data file and specified a custom location for automatic backups (or turned that function off).

Was CCC set to backup all of /Library? Specifically Library/Containers? If not, then you did not have your backups or data file saved to the remote drive.

What about the time machine "partial backup"? Does it have the Library/Containers folder backed up?

I may have deselected some of the LIBRARY folders from the copy since I thought all important data files would be stored in the DOCUMENTS folder not in LIBRARY. My mistake. Thanks for trying help me on on this. I’ll fix this for future backups

TBH, I keep my data file (bundle) in my Documents folder and open MD by clicking on an alias to that file in my Dock. This works fine. I also set my backup folder to a folder in my Documents folder. (and make permanent archival backups several times/year).

I like having control over where my backups and data files are.
