I'll go with "I've been using Moneydance for about 10 years" to make the following conjecture.

You are probably using a version of Moneydance earlier than 2022.2(xxxx) - Mac OS system updates tend to break older versions of a lot of software including Moneydance. Users using older versions of Moneydance who upgrade to Monterey have reported almost exactly what you report.

To use Monterey with Moneydance - you will probably need to upgrade to the 2022 version of Moneydance to do so. Whether there will be a fee to do so (usually half price) depends on the current version you are using.

You can check your license key for upgrade eligibility (if you can find it or read it) at
https://infinitekind.com/purchase

Moneydance does not require you to upgrade, but changing your MAC OS system might cause you to need to upgrade.

Hope that helps.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/495133652021-11-28T19:23:43Z2021-11-28T19:23:48ZMacOS Monterey

Starting Moneydance 2012 (825)

Tried changing the font, to no avail. Changing font size also did not help.

Frank Kellertag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/495133652021-11-28T19:41:53Z2021-11-28T19:41:53ZMacOS Monterey

I would note:

Apple have removed Times from the Operating System - who knows why, strange move in my opinion. It is possible to source a Times font and install it to remove that particular error.

When it comes to backwards compatibility of the OS with applications Apple is particularly weak and is known to break many older versions of applications with OS upgrades. Apple's actions has broken many versions of Moneydance and has resulted in the need for many changes to have been made. Moneydance 2012 is not expected to work properly on Monteray, it has not worked properly or bene qualified on any recent version of MacOS - probably since Sierra.

No version of Moneydance prior to Moneydance 2022 will be supported with Monteray and I would expect most earlier versions to fail or have problems. I do not see any solution other that to purchase an upgrade.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/495133652021-11-28T19:57:36Z2021-11-28T19:57:36ZMacOS Monterey

Install this font to resolve that error:

Monterey requires the latest version of Moneydance in order to function properly.
We would recommend downloading and installing Moneydance 2022.3 (4062).

Is there a reason for recommending it over the current release build 2022.2 (4060) ?

borehamtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/495133652021-11-29T18:26:12Z2021-11-29T18:26:12ZMacOS Monterey

just a user...

@boreham - that's an interesting question - some previews are just bug fix releases, some have new features that need more testing.

You can check out:
https://infinitekind.com/previewdl/current/changelog.txt

to see what changed between 4060/4061/4062 to see if you "need" any of the changes.

You can also ask here (you just did) if the previews in question are more "bugfixes" or "new beta features".

In this case 4061 and 4062 are mostly bug fixes versus "preview betas".

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/495133652021-11-29T18:41:00Z2021-11-29T18:41:00ZMacOS Monterey

Thanks dtd. For many years I did what you suggest and was usually on the latest Preview build. More recently I have been playing it safe and sticking with the Release builds.

I haven't been aware of the distinction between Preview Betas and Preview bug fixes before. I assume that is a somewhat subjective distinction. Bug fixes unless the change log says something like "first build of 2023.1".

I was surprised to see Support recommending a Preview build over a Release, to someone who hasn't updated for nine years, which made me wonder if there was something particular in this case. The change log looks quite important for iCloud syncers.

borehamtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/495133652021-11-29T18:55:05Z2021-11-29T18:55:47ZMacOS Monterey

@boreham - The issue on previews is there is only one path, so both bugfix previews and beta feature previews are in the same string of preview releases. And, as you say, the distinction is subjective.

I personally am still using 2021.1(3069) for my live data, and I "play" and "test" with the newest version at this time. (I have two versions of Moneydance on my computer, which I call Moneydance 3069 and Moneydance 4062....)

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/495133652021-11-29T18:58:31Z2021-11-29T18:58:31ZMacOS Monterey

Interesting! Why do you keep your live data with 2021.1 (3069) ?

borehamtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/495133652021-11-29T19:57:20Z2021-11-29T19:57:20ZMacOS Monterey

I don't totally trust any version of 2022 quite yet (the new features keep getting bug fixes) and I don't need the new features until MD+ supports Investment Accounts.

And, for example, some things get broken, my impression is that some reports that work in 3069 no longer work and keep getting tweaked in 2022 to work right again.

3069 is a truly stable version to me, but I can't resist testing (often with a copy of my live data) with the newer versions. Just the way I tend to work.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/495133652021-11-29T21:39:25Z2021-11-29T21:39:25ZMacOS Monterey

Many of us run our live data on totally different versions that what we field questions on.

My live data is on a machine that never sees another version of software unless I decide to upgrade. I run many version of Moneyance on machines I use for testing. The oldest version I hve on a test notebook is Moneydance 2008 and the newest is Moneydance 2022.

The reasons for not upgrading are many, the exiting version does what is needed, later versions do not include any or any significant features you would use, the existing version is stable etc.

Unless you are using a Mac you can pretty well use any version of Moneydance released in the last 10 years or so the backward compatibility between the OS and older application versions is good on Windows and Linux.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/495133652021-11-29T22:02:42Z2021-11-29T22:02:42ZMacOS Monterey

Thanks dwg. With your commitment and contribution to MD none of that surprises me. But I am a bit surprised that Support would recommend a Preview build to someone who hasn't updated for so long.

borehamtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/495133652021-11-30T00:59:57Z2021-11-30T00:59:57ZMacOS Monterey

Monterey requires the latest version of Moneydance and since the most recent stable release there have been a number of significant bug fixes.

It becomes a judgement call on exactly what to recommend, but based on the Monterey requirements and changes to recent releases of Moneydance then using the latest preview release makes sense in this case.

I'm also expecting that there will be more preview releases before we see the next stable release, at this stage it is very much the case that there will be progressive improvements in Moneydance around new features like Moneydance+, iCloud support etc, plus things like reporting fixes.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/495133652021-11-30T07:14:24Z2021-11-30T07:14:24ZMacOS Monterey

I think it depends on the preview. Each is different. Some just contain insignificant fixes. Some contain significant and needed fixed. Some are major upgrades. Each is different.

For example the last preview replaced the whole Java Virtual Machine to a new brand.

Some previews have been real dogs and some very stable.

For normal users the latest stable is best but sometimes, it’s better to be on a preview. Depends on the situation.

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/495133652021-11-30T08:06:02Z2021-11-30T08:06:02ZMacOS Monterey

OK thanks both.
