Moneydance Quote Loader

Something just happened to my Quote Loader that I can't figure out. I added a new Security which defaulted to "Do Not Load" for the Source. I updated the Source and checked Save Parameters but nothing got saved. I tried this for other securities and the same thing happened. No updates to the Quote Loader parameters are being saved. I can download prices and save them to Moneydance but I have to manually update the parameters now everytime I use Quote Loader.

    Please could you do the following:
    1. Start Quote Loader
    2. Click on Help
    3. Click on Turn Debug On/Off
    4. Click on Detailed
    5. Change the security in issue to a valid source
    6. Click on Save parameters

    Locate the file errlog.txt on post it to this forum, or click on MD Help/Console window, copy the contents of the console window to the clipboard and then post the contents of the clipboard to this forum.

    Hi Gene
    The log you provided only showed an automatic run of Quote Loader in INFO mode.
    You will not be able to run Quote Loader until the auto run has finished. Once this has finished (you will see a message in the status bar at the bottom of the window. Please open Quote Loader (Extensions/Quote Loader) and follow the instructions above.

    Hi Mike,
    I went back into Moneydance, cleared the console, opened Quote Loader, reran the sequence, tried to save everything and exited Quote Loader. I then checked the Console and it was blank. I logged out of MD and then back in. Checked the console again and there was data in there, as attached, but it looked to me like the same data as before that I deleted. I say this because it's about the same length and keeps showing, "Starting Moneydance 2022.2 (4060) at Wed Nov 24 02:48:33 PST 2021" at the top. Again, I deleted this but it's right back in there and Quote Loader is still running the same way not accomplishing "Save Parameters". Thanks for your help!

    Hi Gene, MD clears the console log every time it is started, so let's try a different sequence.

    1.Start MD
    2. Let the automatic run of quote loader finish(if it runs)
    3. Open Quote Loader
    4. Change the run type on Securities and Currencies to 'Manual Only'
    5. Close Quote Loader
    6. Close MD
    7. Start MD
    8. Open Quote Loader
    9. Click on Help
    10. Click on Turn Debug On/Off
    11. Click on Detailed
    12. Change the security in issue to a valid source
    13.. Click on Save parameters
    DO NOT CLOSE MD.
    Display the Console Log and copy the contents to a file and post.

    Hi Mike,

     

    I followed your instructions step by step and the Console Log is attached.

     

    However, after I changed Securities and Currencies to “Manual Only”, closed QL, closed MD, Started MD and opened QL, it did not save and reverted to Automatic Daily. What I’m seeing is that no change that I make to QL is saved when I close QL and MD. Thanks for your help!

    FYI - Whatever you are doing, you keep sending the same console output file dated Wed Nov 24. You need to get the one being created today and check you are getting an updated console log. Might be easier to do help/console and copy paste that into a file.

    Hi Gene, as Stuart pointed out the file you have uploaded comes from Nov 24. I see you are using windows, please do no start MD and upload file 'C:\Users\Eugene Aasen.moneydance\errlog.txt'.

    I’m not the expert on this and I admit that. However, what I’m seeing is that the log is not updating at all. I opened 'C:\Users\Eugene Aasen.moneydance\errlog.txt' as you suggested and that error.log is dated 11242021-255am. I made a copy and saved that under a new name. I then went through the entire set of steps you sent yesterday again and no change. I don’t know if this is a Quote Loader issue or a Moneydance issue or what. But Quote Loader does not save any changes and the error.log does not update. I don’t know what else to say.

    When I switched from Quicken to Moneydance, I imported over 30 years of data into Moneydance. Since then I’ve used Moneydance for 3 years with Quote Loader and never had a problem that I couldn’t figure out with the manual and websited. And I keep multiple backup copies of my data everyday on different disks because I can’t afford to lose 30+ years of data. I’m to the point where I’m thinking I should just delete Moneydance and Quote Loader and start from scratch reimporting my backup data. Not sure what else to do. Here are the two error.log files. File 1 is before I opened Moneydance after receiving your message and File 2 is after going through the steps again. I didn’t go through them line by line but they both look the same to me.

    Try going to MD menu Help/console window. Send that instead.

    Hi Gene, it looks like your Moneydance installation has some issues.
    When MD is installed on Windows it creates a folder called '.moneydance' under your user directory. In you case this should be c:\Users\Eugene Aasen.
    Start MD and go to Help/Show Documents Folder. It should come up with a Windows Explorer window that shows all of your MD documents and I would expect it to say Eugene Aasen >.moneydance> Documents in the top box. Can you make a screen shot of that window (click on Alt+PrtScn, open Microsoft Paint and paste the image into Paint, save the file).
    In that box click on .moneydance and it will show a list of folders and files, one of which should be errlog.txt. Can you do a screen shot of that folder (same as above).
    Post the two screen shots.
    Hopefully I will be able to determine what is going on. Are you on PST? We might be able to do a Zoom call, though it will need to be at suitable time, I am 8/9 hours ahead of you.

    Yes, I am on PDT but I’m an early riser in large part to prepare for the opening of our stock markets. That should open up more of an opportunity for a Zoom call if needed.

     

    I took the screen shots you requested with a modification to the second one. Something strange appears to be going on. As you will see, the files and folders that show up when I go through MD_Help/Show Documents do not show any files. So I opened the same folder using Explorer and there they are. I left both folders on the screenshot so you can see what I’m talking about. Don’t know if that’s just a quirk or an issue.

     

    Thanks again for your help with this. I’m still able to use Moneydance and update everything. I just have to do the part involving Quote Loader manually each time which slows me down but doesn’t stop me.

    I just looked at this again and I see what’s happening. The files in my Moneydance are not in the Documents folder. If that’s where Quote Loader is expecting them to be, well they’re not there. You probably saw this already but I just thought I’d send this on anyway. Thanks!

    (I suspect you are not actually opening the C:\Users\Eugene Aasen.moneydance\Documents\Personal Finances.moneydance dataset, but perhaps a different one (perhaps a restored one)? After you close MD, which folder/dataset in C:\Users\Eugene Aasen.moneydance\Documents\ has the latest date/time stamp?)

    Hi Gene

    Moneydance does not use the windows Documents folder as on Mac this does not exist. It creates the .moneydance folder under the user folder, in your case c:\Users\Eugene Aasen. In this folder it creates a Documents folder which contains your data files, a fmodule folder which contains your extensions and an archive folder to contain your archives/backups. When MD starts it creates the file errlog.txt in this folder.

    Quote Loader puts its data in the same directory as the data, no matter where it is. The two attachments you sent show the correct folders but the errlog file has a date of 11/24/2021 as you point out. Very confusing. You should see a file called securityquoteload.bpam2 in folder c:\users\Eugen Aasen.moneydance\Documents\Personal |Finances.moneydance, if it is there what date is on it?

    I downloaded Slack and signed up but I’m missing something and I can’t figure it out. I’m not finding any reference for “workspace”; only Channels and Direct Message. I tried Browsing but that didn’t get me anywhere either. I seem to end up with Slack trying to get me to set up my own user group and members. Can you give me a point in the right direction? Thanks!

    Hello Mike,

     

    I couldn’t figure Slack out. So I finally threw in the towel. I deleted everything Moneydance on my computer, reinstalled the program, loaded the most current backup and then added Quote Loader and now everything is working. I have no idea what happened and I have some cleanup to do on Preferences, etc. but at least everything is working again. Thanks for your help!
