Hi Peter,
Try this...
Open Moneydance.
From the menu bar, go to File > Open.
Look to see if your original data file is listed there.
Alternately, go to File > Restore from Backup.

Hi Peter,
I can see you’ve received a reply from one of our knowledgeable Moneydance customers and it appears you’ve been given all the information you need.
However, don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you have further questions or need any assistance.

Tried both suggestions but nothing - moo original data uploaded
as if starting from scratch - where is my data and why did it disappear?

I'm a fellow user.
One of the most common reasons for Moneydance files seemingly being "lost" is that something has happened to your preferences file, i.e. it has been damaged or deleted, and hence Moneydance does not know what file was last used or where it is.
This problem is more annoying than anything else as it does not affect the data itself.
Search you machine for files that have the extension .moneydance (these are data files) and/or .moneydancearchive (these are your backups)

Install/run toolbox extension. You will see an option to find datasets.

In addition, if Moneydance is opening in the Welcome window and your data file/s are not listed on the right side of that window, you could click Open other and navigate to the location where your data is stored.
Another possibility, could be that you have accidentally launched an older version of Moneydance, perhaps?
Which version and build number do you see displayed?
(navigate to Window->Welcome to Moneydance)
According to our records you should be running Moneydance 2021.1 (3069).
Please keep us posted on your progress, Thank you!
