We are sorry to hear about the problem you have encountered.

Which version and build of Moneydance are you using?
To check, open Moneydance and select Moneydance --> About Moneydance .

In the latest version, you can navigate to Extensions->Manage Extensions and install the Toolbox.
Launch Toolbox and navigate to Toolbox Options (on top left corner) and select -
Update Mode->Yes->Do Back Up Now (recommended) Finally choose Menu: General Tools. Update Functions-> Reset Window Display Settings.

Stuart, I assume you're talking about the same extension that Maddy is referring to?

moneydancetag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/544542522022-05-27T14:33:38Z2022-05-29T18:37:41ZWindows offscreen

Yup. One and the same. Guess who wrote it!?

Maddy’s instructions are always much better than mine

I have tried all the four options for resetting windows. Each proceeded after I accepted the disclaimer, with a success message, then MD quit. (It didn't restart on its own, contrary to what the prompt says.)

But I still can't see any of my register windows.

moneydancetag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/544542522022-05-27T15:33:02Z2022-05-29T18:37:41ZWindows offscreen

Can you try upgrading to the latest preview version?
Moneydance 2022.4 (4080) is now available to download from this page.

You should remove or choose to overwrite the older version and restart Moneydance.

Please keep us posted on your progress, Thank you!

Apple seems very aggressive in enabling this feature which can remove files from your computer but make it appear as though they are still there in the Finder. This can really compromise Moneydance and your data.

Another possibility is that the permissions on the file have changes somehow. This could be on the...personal.moneydance "folder", the key file, or any other files under that folder. Would it be possible to check the permissions on the key file and the folder by selecting them in the finder and pressing
⌘ I
?

Finally, I'd strongly suggest storing the file in moneydance's internal sandbox folder. These days it's the only place on the mac where we can be confident that the file won't be damaged by other processes. I share your desire to want the file in a visible place such as your Documents folder, but unfortunately that's turned out to not be very safe. You can open the internal sandbox documents folder using the Help->Show Documents Folder in Moneydance. Then, close Moneydance before moving the file into it. You should then be able to create an alias in the Finder to the data file in the sandbox folder. In addition you can always set an outside-the-sandbox location for storing backup files. Many others use that feature to keep timestamped copies of your data file in Dropbox, iCloud or some other synced location.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if you have further questions or need any assistance.

This could be a few problems...
- The dataset has moved? - The dataset was/is in the cloud? - AV/Malware prevention is locking the file? - You have permission problems? - Two MDs running at once.. Have you tried rebooting?

Can you find the dataset in Explorer/Finder and Right-click/Open? What happens?

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/544542522022-05-27T16:06:57Z2022-05-29T18:37:41ZWindows offscreen

Never saw this message before.

I always launch the application by double-clicking the dataset, which is in a folder on my disk. That folder is not synched to the cloud. My AV protection asked about my opening the "new" app, but I authorized it and it continued opening from there.

I now get the app open without the error message, but the register windows are still off the screen.

Gonna have to try the reboot thing later... other work is interfering...

moneydancetag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/544542522022-05-27T17:04:25Z2022-05-29T18:37:41ZWindows offscreen

Can you send the output of help/show console?

It doesn't really make sense. If you have run all the toolbox reset window positions options then there are no settings saved.

Can you send screenshot of what you are seeing?

Also, the other thing to try is to close MD, find config.dict, rename it, restart MD.

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/544542522022-05-27T18:44:17Z2022-05-29T18:37:41ZWindows offscreen

I just tried again. I opened MD (latest version) and then tried to load the data. I got this error message.

moneydancetag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/544542522022-05-27T18:47:05Z2022-05-29T18:37:41ZWindows offscreen

You asked for a screenshot of what I see. There's nothing to capture. All I see is my own desktop, with the MD menubar along the top.

The other windows in the program work: Accounts, Categories, Currencies...etc. Just no register.

moneydancetag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/544542522022-05-27T18:50:42Z2022-05-29T18:37:41ZWindows offscreen

I can send the user prefs from the .dict file if that would be helpful

moneydancetag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/544542522022-05-27T19:05:46Z2022-05-29T18:37:40ZWindows offscreen

Very odd. Just try renaming the .dict file. That will either fix it or it won’t.

As for the other errors, I think your antivirus program is blocking MD. This is a problem that you need to fix.

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/544542522022-05-27T20:11:51Z2022-05-29T18:37:40ZWindows offscreen

If it is the AV program blocking MD, it was not giving me any issues until now... As I mentioned earlier, there's no com.infinitekind folder in my containers folder

moneydancetag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/544542522022-05-27T20:33:17Z2022-05-29T18:37:40ZWindows offscreen

Run toolbox. Top menu bar. Click open md folder. One of the options should get you there. You can then copy/remember this location.

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/544542522022-05-28T11:44:48Z2022-05-29T18:37:40ZWindows offscreen

Yup, that's restored the window to the right spot.

Just out of interest, which lines in the .dict file set the position of the main window? Are they

"gui.reg_win_h" = "677" "gui.reg_win_w" = "919" "gui.reg_win_x" = "76" "gui.reg_win_y" = "39"

moneydancetag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/544542522022-05-28T11:48:28Z2022-05-29T18:37:40ZWindows offscreen

I’ll need to investigate. Can you exit MD first and then post a copy of your renamed and now current .dict files? By all means edit them first and remove your license numbers, but leave the rest the same. I would like to find out why you had the issue you had and why toolbox couldn’t fix it. Thx.

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/544542522022-05-28T12:33:45Z2022-05-29T18:37:40ZWindows offscreen

Absolutely.
