Why doesn't Moneydance recognize or open Moneydance data files saved on a usb memory stick?

Just find the file in finder and double click it.

Thanks Stuart. I tried that, but no luck. I can see the file name, but it is displayed in a faded font. It’s like the Moneydance software doesn’t recognize the file as a Moneydance file. Screenshot attached.
Thanks
Jim

To be clear.. you were doing this in Finder and NOT in Moneydance… yes?
Ok, try right click, open with, moneydance.

As I said, try outside MD and within Finder.

When I right click from finder, the “welcome to Moneydance" screen opens. The file I want to open n does not appear and when I select open other I can find the desired file, but it is displayed in the light, inoperable font.
Please see attached screen shot.
Thanks
Jim

Hi James,
We are sorry to hear about the problem you have encountered.
Which version and build of Moneydance are you using?
To check, open Moneydance and select Moneydance --> About Moneydance.
Can you try moving those files to the default location first?
You should close Moneydance before doing so.
Launch Moneydance again. If Moneydance opens in the Welcome window, your data files should be listed on the right side of your screen.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

Hello Maddy
Still doesn’t work. The attached screenshot is all the info about the Moneydance version.
I live part time in the US and part time in Norway. I have computers at both homes. Accordingly I have to keep the Moneydance files on a memory stick that travels with me. This has worked no problem until just recently. Now for some reason, Moneydance will not open Moneydance files, even tho they appear in the Moneydance “open other” window from the Moneydance Welcome screen. Notice both the memory stick “NO NAME” and the actual Moneydance files appear in a light gray font. Not black. Screen shots attached.
Frustrated and unable to access my files.
Jim

Generally, I believe it might be useful referring you to this article of the Knowledge Base.
Also, please can you send us your Moneydance error logs? The logs should include information about what might be causing the problem.
They are saved on your computer as an errlog.txt file.
You can get to your error logs as follow:
1) navigate to Help->Console Window to show the console log in a window
or
2) in the Finder, press ⌘⇧G and then copy and paste
~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support
into the field and press enter/return.At that point the finder will show an internal folder which contains the errlog.txt file which contains the log.
Finally you can paste the full content to your next reply.

Hi Maddy
Yesterday, out of frustration over inability to access my records, I removed Moneydance and then downloaded and re installed Moneydance. No luck. Same problem. I don’t know what impact the reinstall might have on the error log, but below is the content of err log.text:

I'm pretty certain this is a bug of some sort.. I also get greyed out files and cannot open. This all is new as it worked before. Older versions of MD are the same and so are older java versions... So I suspect this is a 'thing' introduced by MacOS Monterey. It seems to be recognising the .moneydance files as directories (which they are) and therefore not allowing you to select them.
I also saw the Welcome window issue too..
BUT... You should still be able to open via Finder..... I'll continue playing..

With MD closed.. Going to Finder, locating the file, and then right click, open with, select Moneydance, absolutely opens the file for me....

Try this:
Launch Finder and locate and select your .moneydance file on the USB disk.
Now Launch the Terminal application, and keep both finder and terminal viewable on the screen at the same time....
At the terminal command line type open and then add a space using the spacebar
Now drag the file onto the terminal window and let go... It will populate the filename/path. You will see something like this:
open /Volumes/MyUSB/MD/USB.moneydance
just press enter to open and launch MD...
Did that work?
14 Posted by Stuart Beesley ... on 27 Jun, 2022 04:56 PM
Another option is to drag and drop the file onto Moneydance app when it's open... This will also open the file...
15 Posted by JAMES HUSSEY on 27 Jun, 2022 07:05 PM
This option did not work. When I use open with Moneydance, all it does is open the welcome window. Then when I hit select other the files are greyed out and will not open.
16 Posted by JAMES HUSSEY on 27 Jun, 2022 07:06 PM
This option did not work either. After executing the open command, the same thing - welcome window and greyed out files.
17 Posted by JAMES HUSSEY on 27 Jun, 2022 07:08 PM
This did not work. Just got the welcome window with greyed out file names.
18 Posted by JAMES HUSSEY on 27 Jun, 2022 07:09 PM
This worked - partially. The first file I drug over to the welcome window opened. However I cannot get another welcome window to allow me to open the other file (Moneydance file I use to manage my mothers checking account).
Thanks
Jim

You didn’t say which option worked?
20 Posted by Wraparound on 27 Jun, 2022 07:15 PM
Dragging the file from the finder window into the Moneydance welcome window.

Ok. You don’t need a welcome window. Get any file open in the main moneydance app. Then drag your file from finder onto the main app window. If you can’t get to the main window then create a new dataset and drag it into that window.
22 Posted by JAMES HUSSEY on 27 Jun, 2022 08:18 PM
OK That worked. Thank you.

@Maddy - this problem (.moneydance files being greyed out) is definitely a problem with Macs (new bug or something, probably with Monterey). It now happens on older MD versions and also older Java versions too. File/Open/Open Other won't work any more. Sean is aware and said he will look into it... So the other reports of similar issues are probably the same thing...

Thank you Stuart!
I appreciate you sharing your findings here.
Hopefully Sean will find a solution soon!
