Hello, I recently upgraded my Mac to Sonoma and now Moneydance responds quite slowly to all input.

Try disabling sync or switching from iCloud to Dropbox ?

    Hi David,
We are sorry to hear about the problem you have encountered.

Unfortunately this issue is affecting all users who have upgraded their operating system to Mac to Sonoma.

As Stuart suggested in post 1 of this thread, for the time being we recommend disabling sync or switching to a different sync method.

To achieve this, from your computer/s:
Launch Moneydance and navigate to File->Syncing
Choose Don't Sync and close Moneydance.

If you are syncing with a mobile device, from your device: Launch the mobile app and select Settings->Syncing via iCloud Drive->Disconnect. Restart your device

To change sync method (after disabling sync):

    • Launch Moneydance again on your computer and open the file you wish to sync.
    • Navigate to File->Syncing and choose Dropbox Folder.

With "Dropbox Folder" you need to have Dropbox installed and running on your computer, but you don't need to be online in order for Moneydance to read and write the changes.

    • Create a Passphrase (You will need to enter the same later, on the mobile app)

Launch the mobile app and choose the same file as your computer.
Enter your Password to match the Passphrase on your computer.

If you are syncing with another computer, from the secondary computer:

    Navigate to File->New->Open synced file.
    - Choose the same sync method as the primary computer - Enter the same Passphrase to match

Finally, enter a "dummy"" transaction on each device and allow a few seconds for them to sync. They should display exactly the same transactions.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

I am currently using Dropbox sync with MacOS Ventura 13.6

Would I be OK updating to Sonoma, or are there other issues?
    Thanks

I wouldn’t until MD releases a ‘certified’ version.

I agree with Stuart, your finances are too important to take the risk.

The people testing the alpha release are not using live data. We often use Virtual machines or even completely separate systems to do the testing, so it is nowhere near our live data.

I'm an alpha tester, so I often do go out on a limb (with not live data) , but I usually wait about 2 months after release of a new Mac OS to upgrade, and to allow other companies to certify compatibility with the new Mac OS, because new Mac Os' break software.

And there are other issues - recently reported them to the alpha/beta area.

While I agree that we ought to be cautious about OS updates that might contain bugs, I think it's ludicrous to suggest that we users ought to forego the benefits of an OS update (which almost always includes security improvements) just because one developer can't get its software compliant with the new OS quickly enough. (If I'm not mistaken, a key part of the WWDC in June is to give developers the new OSes so they can start working on ensuring compatibility and performance.)

I waited a week before updating to Sonoma. I believe that that's plenty of time for other users to report any problems with the upgrade.

MD has been running impossibly slow since I updated to Sonoma. As between MD and a new & improved MacOS, I will choose MacOS every time. If I need to switch to another program because MD can't keep up, then that's what I'll do.

    Just my $0.02.

    1. It isn't just one developer - historically, many software programs aren't fully compatible (even with testing with beta versions of the OS) for 1-2 months after gold release.

    2. Have you tried disabling icloud sync (assuming you use it?) - as that is the major issue that appears Apple changed (i.e. icloud management) in Sonoma.

Unfortunately, the 2023.2 (5051) released yesterday has apparently not addressed the iCloud sync issue.

  11. 11 Posted by dtd on 05 Nov, 2023 08:50 PM

    dtd's Avatar

The issue appears to be more about iCloud itself vs Moneydance. Apple seems to be the one at issue as iCloud in Sonoma "runs like a pig" (tester quote) and they need to release an improvement fix.

Part of the issue is that MD uses the iCloud API to push lots of transaction files, and Apple iCloud now seems to handle these inefficiently.

So, no, the 5051 release has not "addressed" the iCloud sync issue, because it seems Apple must do so instead.

Also, having seen this elsewhere a lot, this is not "passing blame" just to avoid addressing an issue. Apple requires usage of the iCloud API to use iCloud, and the Sonoma release appears to have issues with iCloud. MD/IK isn't allowed to use any other methodology. Apple is controlling like that.

Finally, there is an alternative. Dropbox to sync, even if you might "hate it". It is free, it works, blah blah blah.

iCloud sync was developed as people wanted a fully Apple solution, trusting that Apple would "always do it right"... well maybe they will, but not yet.

Without scouring the entire forum, has MD fixed this issue in the last version (the one I'm still using) or the latest version?

I'm not convinced this is an MD problem.

  18. 16 Posted by dtd on 04 Apr, 2024 11:16 PM

    dtd's Avatar

Gib - it really isn't, as Apple greatly changed the icloud concept in Sonoma, especially regarding small tiny, many many files... and that's what syncing is all about (every little change is recorded as a small file)

That said, some work is being done in the MD 2024 Alpha to ameliorate the issue (somewhat). So, it's still not going to be great, unless Apple fixes/changes this issue, but it might be "acceptable", though still slow.

So for the last couple of days Moneydance is back to normal on my Sonoma system when using iCloud. Do we know what changed? Am I the only one?

For there to be a general change with Sonoma and iCloud I would expect Apple to have pushed an upgrade out to the desktop.

Last night I opened my iPhone app. It had not synced since March 11th, but did sync normally and was up to date so the syncs are working.

Initially my workaround to the problem was to open Moneydance, wait while the first freeze occurred, then disable iCloud sync. When I was done with Moneydance I then enabled iCloud sync, wait while the first freeze occurred, then exit the program. When I realized Moneydance was not freezing right after it opened I found that I no longer had the problem.

A change did occur in my environment. My now adult daughter is on an independence kick and she removed herself from Apple Family Sharing right before the freezes stopped. Very coincidental and I have no idea what the relationship would be between removing an account from Family Sharing and the file performance would be? Maybe the permissions were reset on the account file system in iCloud?!?

A lot of us use dropbox (and a mac), so wouldn't notice other than reports from folks like you....

Haven't wanted to open that can of worms and have not seen any note from the developer that he has modified that code. Dropbox Folders works. Glad it is working for you and reliably. At the moment there are a bunch of other higher priority issues that are being worked on.
    (NOT IK support)

I will note I have not had any further problems with iCloud sync so I think it is resolved. I am on an Intel iMac with Sonoma 14.5.

Hmmm…must be something different with my system (14.5), because I just tried it, and it alternated displaying the pizza wheel for 3 minutes with being responsive for about 15 seconds. It was painful. Went back to DropBox.

FWIW, I have a lot of crashes and odd behavior of Apple system software (e.g. Stocks, WeatherWidget, Finder…).
