Moneydance window position
The Moneydance window no longer remembers its position on the screen when you quit the program in the new V2024. It always opens dead center on the screen. Can this be fixed? It's a bit annoying.

Well, it didn’t solve the window issue for me. I use only one screen and it’s part of my MacBook Pro.

Hence why I think there are two issues, but being position related there may be some relationship between what the software now does and what the result is for you.
The difficulty is that is only affects some users, making isolating the problem that bit harder.

2024.1 didn't fix the issue for me. I decided to go back to 2023.3 and sit this out.
34 Posted by Homer712 on 02 May, 2024 01:31 PM
So, possibly it's not as isolated after all. I too am back on 2023.3 until they get this window thing addressed as well as the "right-click" and "control-click" not working in the Side Bar as it did in previous versions. I'm sure they will, and I'm also pretty sure I'll end up upgrading.

Ok. So the developer has just found the bug/issue. He’s making a fix.
36 Posted by Homer712 on 02 May, 2024 02:43 PM
Outstanding! Time for an upgrade.
37 Posted by drsfg on 02 May, 2024 05:28 PM
I don’t think we really know how many users are affected. There may be users that don’t really care about the issue and are fine with the central location of the screen. They haven’t looked into the issue and reported a problem and Monerydance has not been made aware of them.

I hope you are correct. For me, it’s a minor annoyance. The program isn’t operating as one expects programs within the MacOS sphere to work, so the behavior is jarring. But you know, I deal with other programs and web sites that don’t work properly every day. And for me, the other aspects of the program that I use are stable, so, as I’ve said, it’s an annoyance.

Alpha 5122 is out.. (only use on test data)…
…

Dear Mr T,
Can you let me know when some further testing has been done. I’m not sure I want to subject my data to this just yet,
Thank you for thinking of me.

You should never subject your real data to any Alpha.
That's why "test data" is always mentioned.
And if you've never tested programs before, you probably shouldn't start now...
42 Posted by drsfg on 20 May, 2024 11:51 PM
That’s exactly what I was thinking. The problem is an annoyance but not life shattering. I’ll wait for further testing.
Thanks!!

I tend to keep my open windows anchored to the upper left. And my dock is on the right. Today I moved my Moneydance window to the upper right and when I reopened the program it was still there! I then mused, does the placement of the dock influence how Moneydance remembers placement? ABSOLUTELY!!
Here’s what I found:
Dock on right: Moneydance window on upper right. Result: remembers placement.
Dock on right; Moneydance window on lower right. Result: remembers placement.
Dock on right; Moneydance window on upper left. Result: goes to center.
Dock on right; Moneydance window on lower left. Result: goes to center.
Dock on left: Moneydance window on either upper or lower, left or right. Result: remembers placement.
Dock on bottom: Moneydance window on upper left. Result: remembers placement.
Dock on bottom: Moneydance window on lower left. Result: remembers placement
Dock on bottom: Moneydance window on upper right. Result: goes to center.
Dock on bottom:Moneydance window on lower right. Result: goes to center.
Is this a possible reason why this phenomenon is seem by some users and not by others?

You need to state what build of MD?
Also what Os?
45 Posted by dwg on 22 May, 2024 11:46 PM
It should not be. Moneydance saves the window location and size as absolute X,Y values as a pixel start position for the location and no of pixels for the size.

Moneydance 2024.1 (5118)
Mac OS Sonoma 14.5

But this is what is happening. I’m not making it up. I just tested it. My results were repeatable. I tried it over and over.

That could mean there is some sort of indirect interaction occurring that results in Moneydance saying something like there is an invalid position here I will open in the centre of the screen.

Perhaps another user who has placement problems can test placement with dock position. I have a MacBook Pro MAX 16” 2023 M2 32GB memory

Specs: running MD 2024.1 (5118) on an M1 iMac with 16 GB RAM using macOS 14.5 and driving an external monitor (i.e. there are two monitors - built-in and external).
Experiencing the same window centering issue (i.e. the top left window position on built-in monitor is not restored upon startup of MD) since upgrading to MD 2024 that has not been resolved by any released updates so far. Positioning the MD window in the top right corner of the built-in monitor results in restoration of that position upon startup of MD.
This led me to suspect that a window position coordinate offset may be causing an invalid coordinate when the window is placed flush in the top left corner (coordinate 0,0 if memory serves correctly). Sure enough, when the window is placed slightly to the right of the left edge and slightly below the menu bar the window position is restored upon startup. Therefore, the bug may be as simple as an "off by 1" coordinate translation when attempting to restore window position from the last recorded location.
Until this is fixed by the developers an easy end user work around is to place the window slightly down and to the right of the upper left monitor corner - this works for me - the window is now restored to the almost flush top left corner of my monitor upon startup of MD.
53 Posted by drsfg on 23 May, 2024 04:59 PM
I found that if I move the window the very slightest to the right from the left side with alignment with the menu bar, then the window remembers on restart of the program. If I move the window just slightly down from the menu bar but align with the left side, the window defaults to center on reopening.
I keep my dock on the right side.
So with those who keep the dock on the right side and you use only the built in monitor (MacBookPro), just ever so slight movement to the right keeps the window in place. You can align with the menu bar.

The info / testing is only useful on / using the updated 5124 alpha.

Well, get me a beta and I’ll let you know.

The Alpha can be downloaded from:

Don't even think about letting live data near it. This really is a test version.

Opening window position issue has been fixed. Confirmed on both my 2020 M1 MacBook Pro and my 2014 Intel Mac mini. Both systems are running Monterey 12.7.5.
Removing items from the side bar via control-click still broken.
