copy and paste splits
Dear IK,
I am requesting that the ability to **copy and paste splits** be added to MoneyDance.
It is extremely cumbersome lacking this ability, to then have to manually create large numbers of splits on downloaded CSV transactions.
Many businesses are doing away with OFX and QFX formatting and simply offering CSV for downloaded transactions.
A problem with CSV is the lack of the MERGE feature available to OFX and QFX transactions.
I could take a OFX transaction whose amount matched my manually entered transaction with 17 splits and MERGE the two.
But with CSV, MERGE is not available so I have to manually create and edit each 'cell' of the 17 splits.
That is a long and cumbersome process easily avoided if splits could be copied and pasted.
Please, please, please add this feature.
I would be willing to pay for the upgrade just to get that ability!

Hi David,
Just as an FYI...
There is a 'Duplicate Transaction' option in the right-click context menu that can recreate the splits for you. You will, of course, need to edit the date and values accordingly.
Creating a Reminder with the splits included can also be a viable means of avoiding having to recreate them each occurrence.

Thanks but I am not new to MoneyDance.
I can Duplicate all day long, but that will NOT duplicate the BLUE DOT
downloaded transaction identifier.
Same for Reminders.
You and I do not seem to be on the same page.
A main purpose for me using downloaded transactions is knowing they match
(should match) the financial institution's records.
I enter plenty of manual transactions, but I depend on the BLUE DOT
downloaded transactions to match what I entered manually.
None of what you suggested aids me in anyway.
I do all that already, but not as a means to do away with the BLUE DOT
downloaded transactions.
I can't spend time explaining further.
IK simply needs to make copy and paste splits a feature.
It is so obvious, I am amazed that it is not there already.

The Blue dot is only shown on actual downloaded/imported data. Hence you would not get it on data copied inside of Moneydance

A lesson for the unknowledgeable:
1. Open a downloaded transaction that represents my paycheck of $8000.
2. This downloaded transaction has no Splits, just a single sum of
$8000 and the cute BLUE DOT.
3. Now open my Reminder transaction entry for my paycheck of $8k and
see that it has 17 Splits and no BLUE DOT (because it is not downloaded).
4. Hmmm, how do I get those 17 Splits from my Reminder transaction into
the BLUE DOT downloaded transaction??? Currently, it is not possible.
5. Now I go through the time-consuming process of creating the 17
Splits in my downloaded transaction.
6. Oh stars, would it not be wonderful if I could COPY those 17 Splits
from the Reminder transaction and PASTE them in my downloaded one?
7. Alas, 6) above is NOT possible until IK decides to make it possible.
My apology for that.
What are my 17 Splits? They are:
Salary Income, Federal Tax, RR Retirement Tier I, RR Retirement Tier II,
Medicare Tax, Dental Insurance, Vision Insurance, Long-Term Disability
Insurance, Medical Insurance, Health Care Spending Account, Roth Deduction,
Roth Catch-Up Deduction, Pre-Tax Match, Pre-Tax Transfer, United Way, AD&D
Insurance, Rail PAC.
I keep track of all these Categories in various accounts in MoneyDance.
Since my bank recently stopped providing OFX and QFX formatting for
downloaded transactions, I must resort to nasty CSV.
Without OFX or QFX, the MERGE feature is not available for CSV transaction
data.
MERGE allows the Reminder transaction to be merged with the downloaded
transaction - that means it automatically creates the Splits in the merge
process.
Since I refuse to pay for a service to get access to what is my free
transaction data in the OFX or QFX format, I must manually create those
Splits until IK decides to do copy and paste of Splits.
There you have it.

I tend to apply the reminder and then discard the single 8000 item.

FYI.
@Kevin is saying you could duplicate last month’s pay check txn that contained all the splits and just change the date. My contextmenutools extension can help with this as it allows you to duplicate and adjust by x months etc.
@dtd is saying to have a monthly reminder txn for your pay check and when you download, delete the downloaded one and keep the reminder one.
Anyway, nice idea. I get it now… 🤔

I thought I was making this clear, but perhaps not.
For ALL my banking accounts and investment accounts, I WANT TO RETAIN ALL THE BLUE DOT DOWNLOADED TRANSACTIONS.
I give preference to the BLUE DOT downloaded transactions over my non-BLUE DOT transactions.
Any manually entered transaction and its Splits is MERGE(d) with the equivalent BLUE DOT downloaded transaction if the download is in OFX or QFX format.
With CSV, MERGE(ing) is not possible.
Therefore, I must make the BLUE DOT downloaded CSV transaction match the manual/Reminder transaction then delete the manual/Reminder transaction.
My goal is to have all BLUE DOT downloaded transactions as confirmation my register ‘matches’ the business I downloaded from.
Granted, not all entries in my registers are BLUE DOT transactions, but 99% of them are.
It really frustrates me that I can’t copy and paste the 17 Splits from my paycheck Reminder into the BLUE DOT downloaded transaction.
I have to recreate the 17 Splits every time due to no MERGE available with CSV downloaded transactions.
Summary: IK should have copy and paste available for Splits.

I think you're obsessed with blue dots, personally, just my opinion...
Also, your first sentence of most of your messages tends to be condescending. We are also long term users, and do understand what you are asking for. We just have different concepts on how it can be handled versus your insistence it must be done the way you want it.

I thought this request was interesting enough to tackle.. I have updated my contextmenutools extension with this feature. It plugs seamlessly into the register's txn right click menu..
Is anyone here interested in helping to test it out for me?

Hello Stuart,
I have been very impressed with your Toolbox since you introduced it.
The Move Transaction feature is extremely handy to move downloaded Vanguard
transactions from one account to another.
I never understood why the Batch feature wasn't made to work fully with
investments but you came through for everyone.
You didn't have copy and paste of Splits in the box and I did not want to
impose on you.
Thank you for taking up the task - yes, I would like to test it for you
since I very much desire to use this needed feature.
By the way, back in the early 70's, I knew a couple of girls who attended
Oak Grove Elementary in Springfield, MO.
Sandy and Pam were their names and they were good friends.
I believe Pam's last name was Beesley - any relation? They would probably
be about 60 now.

All, an update that needs to be added to the 'lesson' :wink:
I can get CSV imports (using MD's inbuilt file/import menu) to offer both the blue dot and the merge feature... Without fail on CSV / text files..
The key is that when you use CSV Importer extension, you don't get the merge option.. I will look in to that.
I now have a working copy/paste splits extension. If you want to play email me (as it's in testing):
(Note: you must be on MD2024.4 or later for this extension)

OK.. further info... I've redone all my tests today, and in fact I DO GET BLUE DOTS and the option to MERGE even when using CSV Importer extension on csv text files, as long as you select the 'Online' option, and not the 'Regular' option.
So, to anyone importing CSV and who are getting a blue dot, but NOT getting a merge option, please provide more details - thanks..
