My goal was to get rid of Windows and use Moneydance on ubunatu. So I made /home/carey/.moneydance a Local Network Share and copied my entire Windows \Carey.moneydance folder to ;ub;untu; /home/careh. When ubuntu Moneydance said it couldn't open my ubuntu database QDATA1 2, I changed all the folder and file permissions to Read and Write files and Create and delete files, but ubunt8u Moneydance still says Permission denied. How can I copy my Windows Moneydance database to ubuntu? On both machines, my username is Carey, and boath have the same OS login password.

careytag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479212752019-12-14T15:59:18Z2019-12-16T10:30:35ZMoneydance on ubuntu can't open database copied from Windows 10 Moneydance

sorry about the typos, ubunatu->ubunto, ;ub;untu;->ubuntu, careh->carey ubunt8u->ubuntu

careytag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479212752019-12-14T16:19:36Z2019-12-16T10:30:35ZMoneydance on ubuntu can't open database copied from Windows 10 Moneydance

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi Carey

I am Linux ignorant.

However, if you can open Moneydance under Linux computer click HELP – SHOW BACKUP FOLDER. Note the folder location. Close Moneydance.
On the Windows PC with your data set open in Moneydance do a FILE – EXPORT BACKUP to a known location.
Copy your “.moneydancearchive” file to the Linux computer Moneydance BACKUP FOLDER.
Start Moneydance on your Linux computer, click FILE – RESTORE FROM BACKUP select you backup file and restore.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479212752019-12-14T21:12:53Z2019-12-16T10:30:35ZMoneydance on ubuntu can't open database copied from Windows 10 Moneydance

Well you've done it again. Interesting: had to
copy the backup (actually not done manually,
M stores a backup every time you exit it in
archive/backups) out of .moneydance, which
you can't see on ubuntu because the leading '.'
means hidden or something like it, into a
non-hidden folder. Also had to rename .moneydance
folder from Windows and have M create a new
database (which I later deleted), then delete
the new .moneydance tree and rename my W tree
back to .moneydance so M would store future stuff
there. So thanks again.

careytag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479212752019-12-14T21:38:35Z2019-12-16T10:30:35ZMoneydance on ubuntu can't open database copied from Windows 10 Moneydance

Ftom sprimost

Not support, juty a user

YOu did nto indicate whether you are experienced in Ubuntu/Linux, since
the security policy on LINUX does get in the way, in the name of "security."

There are two ways of getting this to run.
(1) the application method: do a File-> Export Backup to the local network share (or better yet, to a separate disk. This also provides a
back-up just in case something might go wrong. The on your Ubuntu
system, do the reverse, File -> Restore from Backup. you should have
every part of the data_set recreated (except for some
preferences....others on the forum can answer that). If it is a new
install of MD, obviously enter the license key.

(2) the operating system method: as one may not know, when you "mount" a disk, (a file share through SAMBA is treated as a disk), it is mounted
as "root" no matter what you put the file permissions as for the files
and directories. Thia is especially ture if you have a "mount point"
within a disk, but not if you actually mount the disk, like through
Dolphin). it is possible to change this, but it is not for the faint of
heart as it requires a bit of knowledge about fstab.

ON the latter point, much ahs been written about not sharing MD data
through local network. It is possible to corrupt your data or encounter
data inconsistencies. It is best to chose your "master" and sync to the
other computers through the Dropbox method. And be vigilant about backups

Hi Carey

Glad I was able to give you food for thought, so you could get to where you wanted to be.

Have Fun

derekkent23
