1) Discover connections work with the preview build, currently MD 2019.4 (1900)
You can d/l the preview build here:
https://infinitekind.com/preview

2) It is not uncommon for brokerage houses to only provide 60 ~ 90 days worth of transaction data via direct-connect. Anything further back than that time frame needs to be either manually downloaded & imported OR it will need to be manually entered.

The alternative, is a kludge wherein you choose an arbitrary starting point and enter your holdings in accordance with a statement for the arbitrary date.

I cant even kludge w/r securities.

I have invest acct which downloaded all the dividends transactions for couple securities. However, it does not have securities holdings itself. That is - has the cash from dividends but not the shares. I clicked on "add security" , the securities were not options on the pull down meny so I "new" specified name/ticker/id , clicked OK and nothing.

What I am doing wrong ?

rzep999tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/480730082020-02-07T21:57:16Z2020-02-07T21:57:49ZStill considering ..

Hi rzep999,

Adding securities is a 3-step process...

Step 1) Add the security to Moneydance. (Menu bar > Tools > Securities)
Very Important Create only 1 instance of any given security regardless of how many different accounts it may be held in.

Step 2) Add the security to the Investment account. (Security Details View > Add Security)

Step 3) Enter a 'Buy' transaction in the register to represent your holdings.

For more information, look to the following Moneydance KB articles:
The security list which is in the menu does not match the one in in your step2. The security which I am trying to add is in he menu/tools/security but not in "security detail/add"

Anyway, I probably spent week worth of time (over last month) "playing" with MD and anything I touched required research and workarounds . Nothing seems to work just "right" in terms of accounts management. I don't think my setup is that complicated...and I gave up on quicken QIF file conversion first day as I simply do not have time. As securities go, I dont think the person who did that ever owned a share of anything. ... I guess I am not looking for "projects" at the moment especially if the end game would be saving $30/year.

I had bigger hopes here. This is all way too painful than it should be.

rzep999tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/480730082020-02-08T20:33:04Z2020-02-08T20:33:05ZStill considering ..

I feel your pain rzep999. I'm not support staff, just a newbie user. I'm currently evaluating MD and KMyMoney as a replacement to quicken 2017. I have several investment accounts with shares of stock, mutual funds, etc that have been purchased periodically for over 15yrs. It appears that it will be a bit of a pain to get it all working.

wrt your investments, you could use quicken to export just the investment account to qif for import. Then you should have all the old buy/dividend transactions. I know, its not easy but may be worth it. Be aware that quicken allows you to record a transaction back into the same account, while MD & KMM do not. So before you export from quicken, you might want to review your transaction register and see if there are any entries with the category = the same acct you are viewing. If so, you'll end up with a "accountname_X" in MD. You can 0 that account out by setting the starting balance to negate it. Or the "better fix" would be to change those transactions before exporting and create a new dummy category that those xans record into.

Once setup though, I think MD will be a good choice... I think. The reporting in KMyMoney looks more robust for securities, but the basic portfolio view in MD looks better. I'm still learning about the MD reporting options.

Plus the ease of entering transactions into accounts seems easier in MD (more similar to quicken) than KMM.

Lastly, I'm under the impression that the cost of MD is $50 one time, versus the annual subscription that quicken now requires. So, over time, MD would be a nice savings. More importantly, I believe quicken has removed the option to export to qif, so if you stick with quicken you may end up with your data stuck in there and no way to export it.

Hope this helps and Good luck - Jaimi

jkosatag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/480730082020-02-08T20:58:09Z2020-02-08T20:58:10ZStill considering ..

re giving up on Quicken QIF, followed by entering securities issues.

You may give up on the QIF for overall entry transaction and cash balances, but definitely use it to get the Security List and Security values over versus recreating them (tedious!)

MD handled my security positions and created the Security List for me in the QIF import. All correct. The incorrect things were the cash balances, which you can either ignore, or put in a wildly crazy adjustment for an initial balance and have it correct going forward, leaving the past as wonky.

But as to security list and security values - MD creates that for you automatically on the QIF import.

jkosas suggestion on avoiding ACCOUNTX accounts worked for me, but you could just hide them and make them inactive as another quick fix.

Good luck. [You of course will have to follow the 3 step process in the future for new securities, but that's just one or a few at a time. I have about 400 securities (past and present) due to moving 35 years of data.]

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/480730082020-02-08T21:38:04Z2020-02-08T21:38:04ZStill considering ..

I did investigate KMM when I migrated, even to the degree of asking them some questions on where they were heading in terms of Investment handling.

The reply I received was not encouraging so I felt any improvements there were a long way out. The pace of development since has reinforced my view.

I was not happy with some of the approaches used with the program it was more like GNUCash which I understood it to be related to i.e. an accounting approach, rather than how Personal Financial Management software would handle it.

dwg
