" I then delete the transactions. " That's why they come back. MD and the bank no longer know you've downloaded them, so they download them again.

Is it because they duplicate entries you already have? If so, you should MERGE them vs. confirming them. Is there a different reason?

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483040312020-05-05T22:56:56Z2020-05-05T22:56:56ZDeleted Downloaded Transactions Keep Coming Back

I do not think that is the correct behavior.

First, I read some prior posts here that said that If I did not want these OFX transactions to be readded, I needed to confirm them and then delete them. I had expected that to work but it did not.

Second, downloaded transactions are not always correct. Some convey incorrect information. Otherwise why would there even be an option to confirm them if they are always right.

Third I am trying to set up Money Dance for initial operation. When I do a download, for some brokers that maintain many years of history they provide a hugh number of transactions - thousands. And there are many in that list that are incorrect, or pertain to non-existing stocks due to mergers, etc. I am trying to start with a clean slate and dont want this burden.

Fourth, that is not how quicken behaves. When a downloaded transaction is deleted in quicken, it never comes back.

There are many way to solve this problem and Money dance in some of these forms have said these should not come back. It is unacceptable if these transactions keep coming back. It would make this app unusable. Its a very serious problem.

I can only hope that someone from MD will address this.

docjay2012tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483040312020-05-05T23:09:19Z2020-05-05T23:09:19ZDeleted Downloaded Transactions Keep Coming Back

Here is some additional information. Whether transactions come back seems to depend on the brokerage / bank. For example, for TDAmeritrade deleted transactions do not come back, but for schwab they do.

docjay2012tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483040312020-05-05T23:09:42Z2020-05-05T23:16:36ZDeleted Downloaded Transactions Keep Coming Back

just a user (and that is pertinent to my next response)

Given your complete rejection of my assertion, vs. trying to engage in a polite and productive conversation, I will let someone else tell you what is going on.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483040312020-05-05T23:29:34Z2020-05-05T23:29:34ZDeleted Downloaded Transactions Keep Coming Back

I'm a fellow user.

If you delete the downloaded transactions then Moneydance will download them again and again until they are no longer available to download. It is the presence of the transaction with its associated transaction ID in the register that allows Moneydance to ignore the transaction in the download.

References to deleting the transaction is most likely related to deleting a manually entered transaction and keeping the downloaded one.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483040312020-05-05T23:56:14Z2020-05-05T23:56:14ZDeleted Downloaded Transactions Keep Coming Back

That is not true. Deleted transactions should not come back. Its an unacceptable and defective implementation if they do. They don't come back in quicken.

I have some additional information. After deleting and downloading about 10 times the deleted transactions stopped coming back on schwab. Based on some prior forum replies from the developers which said that they indeed do maintain the history of deleted transactions so that they wont come back but sometimes they come back anyway, I will speculate that there is defective code in their matching algorithms for prior downloaded transactions. This is a problem and needs to be fixed, not ignored.

docjay2012tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483040312020-05-05T23:57:53Z2020-05-06T16:19:30ZDeleted Downloaded Transactions Keep Coming Back

JUST A USER

imo, if this is how you usually present yourself, you must not have many friends.

This query is for the infinite kind to reply to, and requires a factual reply, not an emotional one.

docjay2012tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483040312020-05-06T00:02:53Z2020-05-06T16:20:04ZDeleted Downloaded Transactions Keep Coming Back

Well, you've said that you've read many posts here - this forum is a tit for tat, try to help each other. My initial response WAS factual, and asked for more info to help better. Yours was, imo, an emotional diatribe on what the only way things could be right are, and if they don't match your needs Exactly and match Quicken Exactly, then it isn't right.

Works both ways.

I could have given you a point by point factual reply, even as a user - but after your emotional outburst, decided not to do so.

Nor will I reply again.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483040312020-05-06T15:41:36Z2020-05-06T15:41:36ZDeleted Downloaded Transactions Keep Coming Back

Hi everyone,

Please keep discussions on these forms civil. We don't want to have to block people's accounts, or really spend any time moderating posts. If you don't feel like you can do that on this thread, please just don't respond.

That being said, the above advice was correct in that through direct connections with your bank (which it sounds like you are using) Moneydance will always ask the bank for all available transactions. Deleting the transactions will only remove the information Moneydance needs to know it has seen those transaction before, and will just download them again. Instead, you should mark them as confirmed, and not delete them.

If there's something wrong with the downloaded transactions, can you explain in a bit more detail what seems to be incorrect? The confirmation process is partially about making sure the downloaded transactions are correct, but it's more about assigning the proper income/expense categories to transactions, or merging them as needed. This is information that is not included in downloads from banks. If your bank is sending incorrect information, like the wrong descriptions, amounts, etc, that could indicate a more serious problem. That's usually not the kind of confirming one needs to do in that process.

I'm not sure where you are reading the confirming and deleting downloaded transactions will cause the program not to download them again. Can you provide a link to where you have read this? I want to correct that information on our forums, so others aren't misled.

https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/problems/1949-delete...

When looking at the reference, it is years ago so perhaps that does not apply any more?

I did see other discussions that were more recent where infinite kind replied to a complaint that deleted transactions come back approximately as follows: Deleted transactions should not return, because the program maintains the history of even those that are deleted (deleted is only visible use, not database content) BUT that some financial providers may return a different date on subsequent downloads which would confuse the program.

Regardless of what I have read, you said the following:

" That being said, the above advice was correct in that through direct connections with your bank (which it sounds like you are using) Moneydance will always ask the bank for all available transactions. Deleting the transactions will only remove the information Moneydance needs to know it has seen those transaction before, and will just download them again. Instead, you should mark them as confirmed, and not delete them."

The above statement IS NOT CORRECT , or at least the money dance programs behavior is NOT consistent with that statement. Here is how I know: I have the program, version 2019.3, I set up online banking, I download transactions, I get several YEARS worth of transactions for a single account, I delete the transactions, I download again, the second DOWNLOAD DOES NOT RESTORE (e.g. redownload) the removed transactions MOST OF THE TIME.

In fact, the problem I have been having with deleted transactions being restored upon new downloads has gone away on most of my accounts (I have tried on more than 10), after repeated downloads. It can take multiple attempts, but eventual cycles of download, select all, delete all, eventually caused the transactions to not reappear.

In addition I have an account where after I download I do NOT delete the transactions, then download again, and for each download I get a duplicate set of transactions. Sometimes they are ALL duplicated, sometimes only SOME of them.

Does that sound like correct program behavior? Is it correct for each download (using the (Online / Download All Accounts) command to download already seen transactions so that after one download one gets one copy of each transactions, after two downloads one gets two copies of each transactions, etc? Or is that erroneous program behavior that needs to be investigated and fixed?

I do not have the source code, but will speculate that (A) deleted transactions are still remembered for suppressing future downloads (B) there is an algorithm for suppressing duplicate downloaded transactions (C) the algorithm is defective or lacks the smarts to always suppress.

This is a serious problem for initial setup, as it makes it impossible to configure on line download especially for financial institutions that return multiple years of history. It is also unacceptable even for the benign case where I dont delete transactions for duplicate entries to appear for every subsequent download command.

This behavior is unacceptable and needs to be researched and repaired.

docjay2012
