However, I like to have Moneydance installed as an app in a NAS so backups and redundancy are afforded.

I have looked on the web for information regarding this issue without success so I am directing the question directly to you.

Is it possible to install Money Dance in a NAS (Qnap or Synology).

Even if it is installed in a partition it would be nice to have it on a more redundant system than a stand alone pc or laptop.

PS: is Moneydance a multiuser system? (I would like to have my wife and I access the same file without having to share a computer) is this possible?

THanks.

FELIX TONGtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489613812021-01-09T20:09:50Z2021-01-09T20:09:50ZCan I install Moneydance on a NAS?

I'm a fellow user.

Moneydance is designed to be installed locally, it is not supported to instal it on a central system.

It is also designed to work with local files, the way it reads and writes its normal data does not work well with a network stack.

You can certainly use a NAS as a destination for the backups that Moneydance creates.

It is not a multi-user system as I believe you envisage, to do that in the PC space it would have be a client/server type of application to protect the data. It does however allow data to be shared using a replication process, which the NAS system could be used as the shared location for the exchange of data.

Moneydance removes the problem of record locking and contention by each machine having its own copy of the data and transaction updates being passed between the machine then applies locally.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489613812021-01-15T00:18:20Z2021-01-15T00:18:20ZCan I install Moneydance on a NAS?

I'm a fellow user. I have a Moneydance file stored on our NAS, which is a Seagate Central unit. It seems to work correctly with our two iMacs using the file alternately. I've also set Moneydance to backup to that share. Haven't been doing this for a long time, and can't comment on how it 'should' work.

We do NOT attempt to both open the file at once. That would be unwise, if even possible.

bulwnkl404tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489613812021-01-15T15:14:12Z2021-01-15T15:14:12ZCan I install Moneydance on a NAS?

Thank you for your reply to my question.

We are interested in installing the software on two computers (mine and my
wife) and keeping the file on a NAS (like in your case). We intent to
access the file at different times.

However, my concern is what may happen if the second person tries to access
the file while the first person is still using it. (Like in the event I
forget to close the file after using it).

The reason I am asking is that we had a bad experience several years ago
with Quicken. The file was accessed by a second computer and transactions
were added to it that were overridden when the other file was closed. (It
was a mess...).

puy1tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489613812021-01-15T16:46:32Z2021-01-15T16:46:32ZCan I install Moneydance on a NAS?

Moneydance support sent me a link to a better way to share a single file inside the house, using a NAS. Here’s that link:

Using a NAS as the interchange device would be using the Shared Folder method.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489613812021-01-15T19:57:45Z2021-01-15T19:57:45ZCan I install Moneydance on a NAS?

One of the reasons for Moneydance incorporating its own syncing mechanism is the real risks of more than one user opening the data at once, doing this could well result in data corruption.

dwg
