Hi Ronald

Below are the basic steps to add Securities, Add a Investment Account and purchase securities.

Set up each Security under TOOLS – SECURITIES – ‘+’
Example to fill in the New Security window for the security Apply Inc
Security ID = AAPL
Security Name = Apply Inc
Ticker Symbol = AAPL
Value Suffix = Shares
Don’t change the other boxes they are optional. Click OK. Add additional securities using ‘+’ then X to close windows.
See https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/investment-accounts/adding-se...

Set up an investment Account under ACCOUNT – NEW ACCOUNT – INVESTMENT - NEXT. Fill in CREATE ACCOUNT INVESTMENT window. Minimum ACCOUNT NAME. If the investment account has an Initial Balance fill that in to. Click OK See https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/investment-accounts/create-an...

Click on to highlight new investment account in Side Bar, list on left and click NO in the window that opens. The reason for this is to show how you normally add securities to an investment account.

Click on the SECURITY DETAIL tab.

Click ADD SECURITY and in the window that opens as a minimum use SECURITY dropdown to select the security to be added to the investment account. For Sub Types see https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/investment-accounts/security-...
Repeat for each security to be added to the Investment Account.

Click on another account in the Side Bar then click back on the Investment Account.

To enter holdings, buy shares click the REGISTER tab then NEW TRANSACTION.

In the transaction line that opens select the Date.

In the ACTION box use dropdown to select Buy or Buy or BuyXfr. Use Buy when the purchase is to be funded from the Investment account itself, Bank Register tab using Initial Balance set in step 2. Use BuyXfr if the funds are to come from another account.

Use drop down in Security box to select the Security to be purchased.

If the Action type was BuyXfr use Transfer box dropdown to select the Account from which the funds are to come from.

Fill in the Shares box to define number of Shares to be purchased and the Price box to define their price each. Then press ENTER on you PC.

The purchase transaction is complete.

Hi Ron

Moneydance is based on accounting principles so as far as I know there is no way to buy share at zero cost. The best you can do is use a share price of 0.001
Its not a issue I have encountered so maybe others can suggest a better solution.

Hope this helps

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/495692212021-12-29T19:34:38Z2021-12-29T19:34:38Zgetting started

With say initial holdings you can set an initial balance in the account - through the Account information box then your first transaction could be a buy of how many shares you have at an average cost.

But as Derek has said being based on accounting principles Money/shares cannot just appear out of thin air. Yes with Quicken they can but Quicken does not have an accounting base.

dwg
