Expenses having different numbers
Hi, I'm wanting to replace Quicken because it's gotten so bad, but I'm seeing different numbers in the Expense category depending which part of the application I'm looking at, be it the report, the overall budget, or the budget bar at the top of the program. Could you help me figure out where the logic is that is causing this?

Dustin, I saw some of that as well. Is it possible you have negative budget amounts? They will be treated as positive and throw budgets off. I also found items that didn't transfer over correctly from quicken - probably something I did in importing the data.

It appears that my email response didn't get attached to this ticket:
Thanks for the response Jerry!
I’ve checked my transactions from my banks and corrected them. They are accurate as of 01/01/2023 onward.
RE: Negative budget amounts, I have a return that is counted as a negative from last month, however the transaction is 184.01, making the difference: -42.
Numbers I see:
Budget graph at the top: 3463.55
Actual budget page: 4397
Graphs and Reports: >Expenses [graph]: 3888.49
I’m fine with a not entirely accurate “spending” count, meaning, because of the 184 return, the report might show that I’ve spent 3816 instead of 4000. I get that, that’s fine. But as you can see from the numbers above, it’s a bit more substantial than that.
The only other thing I can think of that might be “negative” in the budget is I do have items that are more than what is budgeted. For example, I have “Late Fee” of 30 where the budget is 0 (as an unexpected expense). However I have already adjusted that and tested putting in budgeted numbers where this occurs, but this made no difference.
I do have some savings account transfers, which ad up to 180, but that math doesn’t add up with the numbers above either (including throwing in that 184).
Let me know your thoughts.

Hi Dustin,
I honestly don't pay a lot of attention to the budget graph at the top.
It along with the budget report and the budget bars do not work properly
if your budgets contain negative numbers. In going through the same
things you are about 3 months ago I almost lost trust in Moneydance. I
stuck with it though and found that other than the negative budget issue
the remainder of the discrepancies were importing errors. I had decades
of Quicken data and I finally decided to only import the last 4 years.
That resulted in having to enter non-zero starting balances for several
accounts and also comparing reports between Quicken and Moneydance
category by category. After fixing several problems with imported data I
finally got agreement. Along the way I've created a monthly budget
extension and a monthly budget editor (I'm also working on a budget bars
extension) that all handle negative budget values correctly. All that
helped me go through my data really carefully and also gave be
confidence that (other than the negative budgets) the information being
reported is correct. Hang in there and you will get it all sorted out.
You probably don't want to introduce another variable yet but if your
budgets are monthly, you can try my extensions and get a second opinion.
The can be found at

By the way, as you found, going over budget should not cause the
differences you are seeing.

just a user - Jerry have you shared these as possible official extensions, or do you prefer to keep them as unofficial addons? (or maybe they are different than normal extensions?

Hi dtd,
I have shared these with the Moneydance team as possible official
extensions a few weeks ago but I'm waiting to hear back. From what I
could tell that may take a while. For now I'm just bringing them up to a
few people to see if there is interest. I'm interested in bug reports
and or suggested improvements. I use them daily, but they are new as am
I. I used Quicken for decades and was a professional programmer for my
career. That said, I've only been using Moneydance since November and
have only learned Java starting in December.
