Talk me Off the Ledge of Switching to Quicken
Long time MD user, since 2010. I love MD and used Quicken for many years before 2010. I switched to MD for a couple of reasons:
- Quicken was Zombieware - abandoned by its owners, filled with bugs that were never fixed, and pressure mounted to move to online only platforms like Mint
- Subscription requirements - software required updates every 3 years and then every year to get stock quotes and downloads
- No support for multiple computers - everything had to be on a PC only, Mac support was a joke at best.
At the time Moneydance beat Quicken at those major issues to me and a slew of others that I didn't list. However, it seems like the pendulum has swung a bit the other way:
1. MD isn't exactly Zoombieware, but I feel as though IK rides a lot on the support of excellent community members who make great extensions and plug the various leaks in in the MD ship;
2. UX - I'm not sure if there's much debate here, but the thing that irks me the most is JFreeChart is 20 year+? graphs and charting libraries.
3. Bank support disappearing -- not really IK fault the ecosystem is moving past OFX. MD+ is a good step but it turns MD from a one time or yearly thing into an ordinary subscription service just like Quicken has become.
Because of the recent loss of Fidelity support I've put a couple of hours into learning the new Quicken ecosystem, and there's so much I love about MD that isn't in Quicken, including no sync support for multiple computers. But the subscription price delta between MD+ and Quicken isn't that big in my mind and it seems to support Quicken's new Private Equity owners who are at least seemingly investing in the product. The online bank support is certainly better and UX is tremendously better on Quicken if only because MD is so dated. That said MD is faster for transaction entry (which is a puzzle to me why Quicken is just so bad at that) and Quicken for Windows has 4K resolution problems that haven't been solved yet.
I'm hoping IK can get Fidelity working again but between loss of stock quotes (until the community came up with a revised QL) and a slew of banks dropping OFX support in the last 12 months, I'm wondering if the writing is on the wall. My gut is saying that the IK developer(s)' heart just isn't in it anymore. But again, that's a "gut" feeling with some evidence to support it. I mean even this support system's search feature isn't working anymore as the platform moved to Tender Support.
Long time MD user and reluctant Quicken considering individual.

Tender's search does work so long as you are not logged in.
Moneydance has been using Tender for some years, this is something that Tender has broken recently. Alternatives to Tender have been tried but they have all proven to be inferior.
If you want automated downloads and your bank does not support Direct Connect (as seems to be happening in the States) then an aggregator has to be used, and these cost Money, hence the subscription charge for this service.
Moneydance supports the manual importing of what files it can, but CSV files into Investment Accounts will always be problematic and essentialy require extra institution specific processing.

Thanks for posting this. Sad to say, but I agree with much of your sentiment. Like yourself, I'm a long-time user of MD, since 2009. And I don't like to dump on the MD staff, as the support people who staff this forum have been fantastic. Similarly, the community here has been outstanding with their peer-to-peer support and code contributions. In fact, without the excellent community I probably would have jumped ship a while ago.
Yet I can't help but agree that MD, while not Zombieware, seems like it's reached the point of being "plateau-ware" or maybe "goodenough-ware". Case in point: As another user noted (https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/general-questions/19...), we've now gone through all of 2025 without a new version being released.
To your conjecture that the IK developer's heart isn't in it anymore, it may simply be the case that there's simply no return on investment in developing an extensive, major upgrade or set of upgrades (eg, how many NEW licenses would MD sell?)
To your comments about having another look at Quicken, I'm not sure I myself would move back to Quicken, but I've taken a look at, and tried out, some of MD's online competitors. While I still like most aspects of MD, it is very clear that there is innovation happening in the personal finance software space and that there are a lot of great features and usability aspects that competitors have adopted but MD is missing.
You mentioned two key issues that concern you:
No argument from me, especially with the second point. I have no issue paying a monthly fee for MD+, but the whole debacle with Fidelity that is currently being worked on should never have happened. It was very clear that Fidelity was going to be eliminating direct ofx transaction downloads, but MD didn't do anything to proactively get ahead of this issue. So when Fidelity finally cut off direct downloads, everyone got caught and now we're scrambling to find both a short and long term fix.
In addition to the Fidelity issue (which might cause me to jump ship if it's not solved effectively), I also have this set of features/issues that I've been asking for:
Again, not trying to knock the excellent people who frequent these forums. But nevertheless, I'd love to see some improvements start to be released.
