We have detailed instructions on importing data from Quicken at

http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/importing-from-quicken-or-ms-money/...

Moneydance can automatically update almost any securities that
the US version Yahoo Finance can track through the Quotes and
Exchange Rates extension, which you can install by going to
Extensions -> Manage Extensions from the menu bar.

Both of your banks appear to support direct OFX connections
(http://infinitekind.com/fi). You
may have to contact your banks to activate these connections for
Moneydance to be able to connect.

Moneydance can work with multiple currencies and remembers
currency history.

I encourage you to download our free trial version from http://infinitekind.com/downloads
and experiment with the program before you decide if you would like
to purchase it. The demo version is fully functional and allows you
to manually enter 100 transactions. Imported transactions are not
limited, so you'll be able to fully test things like importing from
other programs and connections with your bank. If you decide to
purchase the program at a later date (from http://infinitekind.com/purchase)
you can keep all your data, the license key simply unlocks the
ability to manually enter more transactions.

In case you haven't found it yet, our full user guide can be
downloaded from http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/user-guides

I am finally looking at the free trial version of Money Dance, as Quicken
seem to be making it impossible for non USA customers.

Am a bit disappointed that I can no longer import transactions from
Quicken, as they seem to be trying to lock in there users. So, unless you
have any other solution will have manually enter balances.
On investments, I tested one of my shares, and it did not seem Money Dance
recognized the security and so would not update the price. Is this because
I am using the free trial version?
The security is Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust PLC :SMT:LSE

Does the full version provide a security lookup service as per Quicken?

Hi David

You have asked two questions.

The second question obtaining security prices. Positive answer, see below, but first:

Importing data from Quicken

Try the following.

Make sure you are running this build of Moneydance https://infinitekind.com/preview

You need to use Quicken to export your data in a QIF file type. Ensure any closed account that have transfers to any open accounts are included in the QIF file, re-open these accounts if necessary.

Open the QIF file in a text editor. You are looking for the date format used in the file e.g. D25/03'2019 Day Month Year or D5/ 17'19 or D05/31/2017 Month Day Year etc. You will need this information later. If you get this wrong it will be apparent as the dates in Moneydance will be all over the place and you will need to start again creating a new data set.

QIF files were never meant for transferring data from one program to another, but it’s all that is available, you will need to spend time cleaning thing up when import is complete.

When you first start Moneydance it opens in the Welcome window click on “Create a new account set”. If you have opened Moneydance before create a new data set under FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – NEW.

Select “Create New File” (Data Set) and click NEXT. Type in an Account Set Name (Data Set) and click NEXT. Change Primary Currency (base currency), if required. File Type, leave at “Standard Account set”, click FINISH.

In the side bar (list on left) under BANK deleted the two default Bank accounts, highlighting them in turn and using ACCOUNT – DELETE ACCOUNT.

NOTE: If you have accounts with currencies that are not in your base currency (foreign currencies) perform the steps under NOTE 1 before importing your QIF file as follows.

Drag and dropped the QIF file into the side bar (list on left).
Waited for import window to appear, this can take a few minutes.

IMPORTANT: Checked all listed accounts are of the correct type and currency and changed if required.

The “Date Format” should be set to the date format used in the QIF file not the date format you want to use in Moneydance. Select the correct Decimal Character. Do not tick “File was downloaded”.

Click import and waited to account values to file in, again this can take some time.
Some accounts maybe hidden under the “+” at the bottom of the side bar, added them back.

Some QIF files don’t include initial account balances. If you think this is the case you can add initial balance to affected accounts as follows.
Highlighting an account, then click ACCOUNT – EDIT ACCOUNT and add an Initial Balance.

For investment accounts QIF file don’t always carry security prices other than buy sell prices, so investment account balances maybe wrong until you update with current security prices.

Reminder are not included in QIF files.

Any accounts that are inactive (closed) should be made inactive by highlighting the account in the side bar and clicking ACCOUNT – EDIT ACCOUNT and ticking the inactive box. To remove them from the side bar, right click and select REMOVE FROM SIDE BAR.

Now the real work starts to check balances and tidy thing up. This is especially true of investment accounts as not all action types are supported. But worth it in the end.

For information on how to use Moneydance see https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb

Note 1: This section only applies if you have accounts with currencies that are not in your base currency. Ensure “Show on summary page” box is ticked under TOOLS – CURRENCIES – highlight subject currency and double click – EDIT. Note: QIF file do not contain exchange rates. To overcome this QIF file shortcoming the Currency/Security History window must have current and dated exchange rates filled in which cover the date range of transactions in non-base currency account. As well as manually adding exchange rates you can import CSV exchange rate files downloaded from sites on the web. Use IMPORT button in the Currency/Security History window.

Obtaining security prices

There are two methods within Moneydance for obtaining security prices automatically.
The extension “Quote and Exchange Rate Updater found under EXTENSIONS – MANAGE EXTENSIONS. Unfortunately, this does not support funds outside the US.
Fortunately, the second method does support Securities including funds outside the US. Try the free third-party Quote Loader. Both of the sources in the Quote Loader have good coverage of worldwide securities.

See the screen shot which shows a price being returned for your example fund.

Thanks for your reply

I should have told you that I now have Quicken 2019. According to Money
Dance knowledge base:

/"// /

/Unfortunately, it appears that Quicken has removed the ability to export data in the QIF format in the 2019 version of the program. In
general, this has been the only format they have provided that is
readable by other personal finance software like Moneydance. Moneydance
cannot read the native Quicken file format, as this is a propitiatory
file format owned and maintained by Intuit. The program still seems to
offer exports in the CSV format, but that format is not able to handle
data as complex as an entire financial history to successfully move it
to another program./

//

/Quicken now seems to offer a QXF export format. It appears that this format is intended for moving data between different versions of
Quicken. We've tried to access this file format, but have so far had
little success./

//

/In short, this means there is no longer a way that users of Quicken 2019 can move their data to other programs like Moneydance. We will
continue working on this issue, but cannot speculate when, or if, we
will be able to access this new file format. To be clear, this is
entirely a result of the decision Quicken has made to drop the remaining
file format other programs can read. It's hard not to see this as
another attempt to lock customers into their software."/

For the security price update, thanks for your advice. I shall give it a
try.

Oh no not the prison camp of Quicken 2019.

Hi David

It looks like Quote Loader thinks that the security price is being stored in Moneydance in a currency other than GBP. The Traded Currency is being converted using an exchange rate to give New Price.

To sort this out can you post screen shots of.
1. Security History window under TOOLS – SECURITIES – double click on subject security.
2. Currency window under TOOLS – CURRENCY
3. Currency British Pound under TOOLS – CURRENCY – double click on British Pounds
4. Investment Account window. highlight your investment account in side bar and click ACCOUNT – EDIT ACCOUNT
Hi David

Also, if Moneydance has been set up correctly to use GBP as the base currency a GBP and a exchange rate should not be listed in Quote Loader.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/378679962019-10-11T14:17:58Z2020-03-18T02:42:07ZFrom Quicken 2013

Hi Before I do that, I set the base currency only after I had purchased
really know what I was doing. So I have deleted and started again.
I first set the base currency as pounds and the particular investment
account doing the purchasing in pounds.
If I understand correctly I should create the security before buying it,
unlike Quicken, where it is done in same transaction.
One problem may be that some securities are quoted in pence. When creating
the security is that indicated in the price field? Then 1 would be if its
quoted in pounds and 100 if its quoted in pence. Is that correct.
Is there a way of validating the security is correct before saving it? I
think Quote Leader can do that somewhere.
I will start over and see if that works.
Thanks for your help.

The answer is in the PDF file you sent me, so I will try it.

regards

davidvernonlongtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/378679962019-10-11T14:46:54Z2019-10-11T14:48:52ZFrom Quicken 2013

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi David

When you set up a new data set (FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – NEW) as part of the process you set the base currency.
When you set up any Account (ACCOUNT – NEW ACCOUNT) you can set its currency. That allows you, if you need to, set up account in a foreign currency.
The same with securities (TOOLS – SECURITIES) you can set them up in a foreign currency.
Quote loader obtains the price in the currency quoted by the source and then checks the currency of the security and if they are different uses the relevant exchange rate to convert Traded Currency price to New Price.
I always set up securities in Pounds even if they are quoted in a foreign currency but you can set them up in the same currency, they are traded in. Either way Quote loader works.
Moneydance always handle sterling as Pounds thus is the source returns a price in GBX Quote Loader automatically converts to GBP. See my screen shot for your security in post 3.
Note you can’t change the currency of a account once you have entered transactions.
The process for adding security holding is
1. Add an investment account to which you want to add securities ACCOUNT - NEW ACCOUNT.
2. Create the security TOOLS – SECURITIES.
2. Add the security to the investment account INVESTMENT ACCOUNT in side bare highlighted – SECURITY DETAIL window – ADD SECURITY
4. Buy security INVESTMENT ACCOUNT in side bare highlighted – REGISTER window.
To edit any transaction in any account, including security purchases, simply double click on transaction line.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/378679962019-10-11T14:52:15Z2020-03-18T02:42:07ZFrom Quicken 2013

Thanks Derek,

Getting on OK. Like how it works, but need to get to know the quirks.
Actuall, Quicken does provide a QIF export on latest version.

I have just posted the following on the Quicken help site.

/"I have exported a QIF file from Quicken, and in the process of importing to Moneydance. The base currency in Quicken was set to USD (as
Quicken is US Centric ). In Moneydance I set the base currency to pounds
as that is my preference. //
//When Creating the New File in Money Dance, based on the QIF file, should I set the base currency to pounds or USD? //
//Am I making life difficult for myself, and would I better off setting the base currency in Moneydance to USD, to avoid conflicts? //
//I have several years data in Quicken which I prefer not to lose."/

I guess you may reply there to make available to others.

BTW, would you mind telling me approx how many users Moneydance have?
This is my second conversion, (first from MS Money which they withdrew),
so hope Moneydsance is a good long term bet.

davidvernonlongtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/378679962019-10-14T08:22:13Z2019-10-14T08:22:13ZFrom Quicken 2013

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi David

It’s my understanding that a QIF file does not carry any indication of currencies. The value in the file are just values. That being the case if the values represent US Dollars when exported from Quicken your only option is to set the corresponding account as part of the Moneydance import process to USD. If you have set the Moneydance base currency most of Moneydance is in GBP except the imported accounts. For the values in the area of Moneydance in GBP to be correct exchange rates must exist in Moneydance before the QIF import. See Note 1 in post 3.
As you have investment accounts in the QIF file these need to be set to the correct currency I assume USD? However, you will find the investment account balances incorrect. This is due to the fact that the currency set in the security history windows will be in the Moneydance base currency. You can change these from GBP to USD and provided exchange rates exist the values will be converted back to USD. As you do this re-calculation occurs, but I think the results seen to be correct.
All this is probably doable, but complex. There may be issues I have not foreseen. Staying with a base currency USD in Moneydance would be less problematical. You may want to forget the QIF import if you want Moneydance base currency in GBP and start anew with Moneydance.

I have no way of knowing how many users Moneydance has other than to say it’s sold globally.
Moneydance has been around for some time, Infinite Kind, the developers of Moneydance was formed in June 1999.

See the list of versions archived at https://infinitekind.com/previous-versions-of-moneydance

As for the future, that’s anybody’s guess.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/378679962019-10-27T07:37:05Z2020-03-18T02:42:08ZFrom Quicken 2013

Hi Derek,

see any issues? Its working so well i do not want to mess it up, so just
checking with you before I start.
Hi David.

If you want to install Moneydance on another computer, windows, Mac or Linux just use the same key you purchased. Makes sure you are using the same build of 2019 on all computers. Then use Moneydance’s internal syncing engine to sync your data between computers using a free Dropbox account. All accounts, transactions, everything, including securities are automatically synced to your second computer. You can literally add a transaction on one computer and it will appear on the other computer within 60 seconds.

If you want to install Quote Loader on the second computer go ahead. Use Quote Loader on either computer and the updated prices is synced to the other.

When you sync you have a primary computer and one or more secondary computers.

Dropbox Folder syncing method setup is as follows.

You need to has a least a free Dropbox account and have installed Dropbox client on the computers to be synced. You don’t have to be online when Moneydance is running as changes are written to your local Dropbox folder. The next time you go online the changes will be synced. The free Dropbox account only allows you to install Dropbox Client on three computers. If you need more than 3 then the extra computers can use Dropbox Connection where you don’t need to install Dropbox client.

Open Moneydance on your primary computer under FILE - SYNCING, set your “Encryption Passphrase”, set “Sync Method” to “Dropbox Folder” and click OK.

Wait for Dropbox folder “.moneydancesync” and its contents to be created in your Dropbox folder. This can take some time. Watch the Dropbox icon and wait till it states “Up to Date”. Then wait until the same Dropbox folder appears on your second computer, again watch the Dropbox icon this time on your second computer and wait till it states “Up to Date”. From now on normal syncing is fast, no need to wait or check. Note: on a Mac if “.moneydancesync” is hidden, try in your Finder window, typing CMD-Shift-G and then pasting ~/Dropbox/.moneydancesync/ into the box to unhide.

On your second computer starting Moneydance should open it in the welcome window, click on “Create a new account set”. Or if it opens in to an existing account click FILE - NEW

Select “Open Synced File” and use dropdown to select “Dropbox Folder” then click NEXT.

You should see a search screen headed “Finding synced files” then “Select a synced document to open”

Highlight the data set name you won’t to sync with and click NEXT.

Enter the encryption password, the “Encryption Passphrase” you set on your primary computer under FILE – SYNCING.

Then click on FINISH. You should see the message “Performing initial sync this may take a while”.

Wait to syncing is complete.

You may find a lot of old, maybe closed accounts or other accounts you have removed from the side bar reappearing in the second computers side bar. Use the “+” sign at bottom of side bar then ADVANCED to tidy up the side bar.

You can also sync to mobile devices such as phones. The free app is available from Play Store, or Apple Store. The setup is as follows.
1. On your phone once the Moneydance app is installed, open the app, then tap "Connect to Dropbox".
2. You'll be taken to Dropbox's website to give the Moneydance app permission to access your Dropbox.
If you're already connected to Dropbox on your device, this may be done automatically.
3. If you have more than one file enabled to sync via Dropbox, choose the file you'd like to sync.
4. Enter the Encryption Password (“Encryption Passphrase”) that you used to sync on your computers.
5. It can take a long time to for the first sync to complete, perhaps leave overnight if necessary.

You can now view, edit and add transaction to your Bank and credit card type accounts. You don’t get access to investment account reminders, reports etc. It’s just a simple method of adding transaction when you’re out and about.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/378679962019-12-23T15:27:56Z2019-12-23T15:27:56ZFrom Quicken 2013

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi David.

Just add the ticker as GB00B41YBW71 I don’t include :GBP but that’s just my preference FT works either way.

However on the rare occasions you may have to use Yahoo :GBP is not recognized. Note you need to select an exchange for some ISIN codes with Yahoo, in this case LSE. Turns out not to be a good example Yahoo quote is out of date.
See screen shot for FT.

By the way I don’t see your post on the forum, did you or support make the thread private, but I did get a email so am replying the same way.

Any problems just post.
Hope this helps.
