Importing MS Money files
Hi. I downloaded and purchased Moneydance yesterday and since then have been trying to import files from MS Money. I have two credit card accounts and 16 other accounts that I want to import, there are a few others in MS Money but they are now redundant so I don't want to import those. I have exported each Money account individually as per instructions, set up new accounts in Moneydance with exact same names as the Money accounts as per instructions. When I import one Money file however it changes the balances in the other newly set up Moneydance accounts too, if I continue to import all the other files individually I end up with some correct balances but others wildly wrong (e.g. -£125,000 in a current account). I've uninstalled Moneydance twice (including manually deleting the .moneydance folder which a regular uninstall does not do) and re-installed and tried again, same result. I've exported the files from Money twice too in case something got corrupted along the way but the same result. My most recent attempt has been (after a new install of Moneydance) to set up just one new account and import just the Money file for that account, and again the balance is incorrect and it's displaying transactions as far ahead as 2017, which seem to be duplicates of earlier, actual transactions but repeated through 2015, 2016 and 2017 (snip attached). What am I doing wrong, it's driving me nuts!

Hi Neil,
Make sure to re-open any closed accounts in MS Money so that they too can be exported.
During the import process, when the Import QIF File window opens try setting the Date Format to MM/DD/YY. I've seen this resolve strange Date issues in the past.
Account balances will change throughout the import process due to transfer transactions involved amongst the various accounts.
Balances may or may not need to be adjusted post import by entering an 'Initial Balance'.
Stock splits will need to be re-applied so as to bring investment accounts into balance.

Mmm. OK. Do I need to import every file from Money, even if I don't want
to, because there may be transactions between the accounts I do want and
those that I don't? It's behaving strangely in that even if I just set
up one account, and import the relevant file for that account, the
Moneydance account list shows a load of accounts that I haven't set up
or imported, meaning that each individual exported file from Money must
have information for other accounts included.
When I'd set up all the required accounts earlier in Moneydance I could
see the balances changing in accounts that I hadn't yet imported files
into when I imported a file into an account, presumably this is because
it's recognising transactions as you point out, but they don't end up
being correct when the process is finished and all account files have
been imported - I wonder if I do indeed need to import every single
account.
It is very odd though, the last time I set up and imported just one
account it had transactions way back in 2012 for a deposit of £100,000
into my current account that hadn't ever happened (unfortunately) but
from an entity that I had dealt with. it seems that something is getting
very confused somewhere, and while I can delete the erroneous entries
from the future (2015-6-7) easily enough I can't go back and check and
edit every transaction to remove any erroneous ones, and entering an
initial balance wouldn't resolve this issue either.
On a separate note, and assuming I eventually get the import issues
worked out, is there a way to change the available currencies? My main
working currency is British Pound, I have two US Dollar accounts, but I
also have two East Caribbean Dollar accounts and there's no facility
that I can see for this currency, manually inputting it somehow maybe?
The edit account feature doesn't seem to allow it. I don't need it to
accurately update conversion rates. The list of available currencies is
a bit odd - Zambian Kwacha, North Korean Wong?! I wouldn't have thought
either of those was very popular.
I also had a quick look at online banking and all I see is a list of US
banks, nothing from the UK at all? Am I missing something here?
Thanks,
Neil.

Hi Neil,
Per the instructions in the following KB article, I think that your best chance at ending up with correct balances is to import ALL of your MS Money accounts.
http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/importing-data-from-banks-and-other...
I'm not experienced dealing with different currencies but from what I've read on these forums, the account's currency must be set before entering / importing any txns into it. User-defined currencies can be created through Tools > Currencies. Unwanted currencies can be deleted. Personally, I have only one currency remaining in Moneydance.
Moneydance uses direct-connect to download data from financial institutions (FI) The program connects directly to the OFX server of the FI. It is my understanding that most UK banks do not offer such servers. Moneydance can manually import OFX, QFX, QIF files if your FI provides them. It can also import formatted CSV files through the use of either of 2 available extensions. CSV file can not be imported into investment type accounts in Moneydance.
It is unfortunate that MS Money makes it so difficult to export it's data. Equally unfortunate is the use of QIF files. QIF files were never intended for data transfer and can cause any number of issues.
If it turns out that you can not successfully import your data into Moneydance, request a refund. You can at least use MS Money. It is my understanding that early releases of Win 10 broke MS Money but that a Windows Update resolved that issue.

Hi Kevin,
Well, I've just another few hours very carefully importing all my MS
Money files but to no avail, I'm still getting all sorts of odd figures
and strange dates. I think I will unfortunately have to give up, plainly
there is a big problem here and i don't know how to fix it, if indeed
it's even fixable.
How do I request a refund?
Thanks,
Neil.

Hi Neil,
Sorry to hear that you were unable to get things sorted. It certainly isn't because you didn't give it your all.
To request a refund, I would start a new thread so that it doesn't get lost in this one. You may want to include a link to this thread so as to show that you gave the import the ole college try and that a refund is warranted.
At least you still have MS Money. I still use the Sunset version of MS Money along side Moneydance. It provides a sort of checks and balances for me.
Good luck, it was nice chatting with you.
P.S. Were you able to get MS Money working on Win 10? I'm leery to take the leap to Win 10 if it's going to break MS Money.

Hi Kevin,
OK, I'll start a new thread ref. the refund.
After some digging around I found a workaround on
forums.windowscentral.com that seems to allow Money to work with Windows
10:
Open Registry Editor (RegEdit).(USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.)
Navigate to the following registry key:
(64-bit Windows)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
(32-bit Windows)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
In the right pane, look for Version registry value.
Modify the value date to 9.11.10240.0.
DO NOT CHANGE ANY OTHER VALUES. Even a small error in the register can
have a profoundly bad effect.
I just did this on a laptop running Windows 10 that wouldn't open Money
(I got the message that it needed Internet Explorer 6 to work...) and
now Money works as it did on Windows 8.1, with no error messages. It's
too early to tell whether this might have affected anything else though,
but hopefully not.
Thanks for your help,
Neil.

Hi Neil,
I'm glad to hear that the registry hack worked for you. When I was researching it earlier there seemed to be some users that it worked for and some that it didn't.
I read recently that a Windows Update for Win 10 resolved the issue and that the hack was no longer needed.
Anyway I think I'll still hold off on Win 10 for the time being. My first experience with it broke my LAN and there doesn't appear to be any new drivers for my network cards. I reverted back to Win 7.
If you're interested, there are some clever people who have put together a couple of apps that allow MS Money users to continue to download txns from their financial institutions via OFX (not so much for UK users)
There is another app that allows users to update stock quotes. (this one might be more useful for you)
Here's a link to the OFX app:

Here's a link to the quotes updater:
