shape for the new year 2013. I just recently installed Moneydancer
and am still learning the program. One thing I have struggled with
is setting up the program to sync with my iMac, MacBook, and
iPhone. I have installed dropbox and enabled syncing, however the
data I see on my iMac is not showing on the MacBook. Can you give
me some guidance in having all accounts sync'd across devices.</p>
<p>Thank You - Todd</p></div>Todd Millertag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/233521602013-01-02T18:02:48Z2013-01-02T18:02:48ZSync between devices<div><p>Hi Todd,</p>
<p>Dropbox syncing via the option in the Moneydance menu bar is for
syncing between your desktop version of the program and your
iPhone, not between two desktop versions of the program. Detailed
instructions on setting up this method of syncing can be found at
<a href=

http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/iphone-ipad-and-ipod-touch-app-inst...</a></p>
<p>To sync between two desktop computers, you will need to place
your data file in your shared Dropbox folder. To move your data
file, see the instructions at <a href=
"http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/moneydance-2012/how-to-move-your-data-file-to-a-different-location-in-moneydance-2012">
http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/moneydance-2012/how-to-move-your-da...</a>.
Once your data file is shared in Dropbox, you should use the "open
other" option on the welcome screen on the other computer to point
that installation of Moneydance to your data.</p>
<p>Please let me know if I can be of further assistance,</p>

<p>Are you using Moneydance by downloading it from our website or
from purchasing it from the Mac App Store? Can you tell me what
version of Moneydance you're using? This can be found by going to

<p>I believe the current version in the Mac App Store is 12.3, so
that's probably what you're using. Unfortunately there's a bug in
that version that's affecting syncing with iDevices via Dropbox.
We've submitted a fixed version to Apple (12.4), which is currently
being reviewed, so when they finish reviewing it you should be able
to download it and get Dropbox syncing going. Hopefully it won't
take very long for them to review it.</p>

there is no way to do that. What do I do?</p></div>tracyftag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/233521602013-02-05T15:58:56Z2013-02-05T15:58:56ZSync between devices<div><p>Hi Tracy,</p>
<p>Syncing with Dropbox is the only option for syncing with the Mac
App Store version of Moneydance and we are also phasing out Wifi
syncing in our direct download version, so we strongly recommend
syncing with Dropbox as it's more reliable and more robust.</p>
<p>As well, syncing via Dropbox uses end-to-end encryption, so the
encryption code you enter in Moneydance is used on the Apple
iDevice and nothing unencrypted passes through Dropbox. Your data
set is also not stored on Dropbox, so only some transaction data
and portions of your data is stored on Dropbox at any time, and
only in an encrypted form.</p>

Using MD11, I set up Dropbox synching to/from a Mac mini, a
MacBook, and an iPad 2. All was well until I added a second iPad
(mini) to the mix. I entered data on the desktop machine this
morning. Both iPads were reporting synching, but not actually doing
the deed. When I revved up the laptop, it synched the data
perfectly, and then I watched with awe as the two little Pads
updated themselves. So my current guess is either that there's a
master/slave relationship between the computers or that I've set up
a priority in some way. I tested with dummy data afterwards, and
all went well, but I haven't yet done the acid test from the
desktop. Any thoughts?</p></div>Sashatag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/233521602013-02-06T16:36:55Z2013-02-06T16:36:55ZSync between devices<div><p>Hi Sasha,</p>
<p>When you say that the iPads weren't actually syncing, were they
not syncing to each other? Also, are the Mac mini and the MacBook
sharing the same data set via Dropbox or some other network share
method?</p>

<p>Since the 2 iPads had the identical outdated data, I can't tell
who was actually synching to whom. I thought the whole group should
have been synching to the correct Dropbox file, since all are set
to use Dropbox (encryption codes have been re-entered on both
iPads). Dropbox, via an in-house wireless router, is the only data
share system I use for Moneydance. What else should I be telling
you?</p></div>Sashatag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/233521602013-02-06T17:25:03Z2013-02-06T17:25:03ZSync between devices<div><p>Hi Sasha,</p>
<p>The two iPads should sync together themselves and then whenever
Moneydance is next opened the entire system should sync. It's
possible if this didn't happen only that one time that there was a
delay in the network or something else that is hard to isolate. And
as long as you're sharing the same data set between both computers,
it shouldn't matter which one Moneydance is opened on for the two
iPads to sync to it. Is this still happening or did it just happen
that one time?</p>

the morning on the desktop, saved to Db. Later in the day, the data
gets read by the iPad 2, with occasional offline entries (buying
gas I.e.), synched when the iPad gets home. Your first sentence
above implies that iPads don't synch back to Dropbox unless the
metadata on MotherShip is open. Or on the laptop. If so, I now
understand my problem: can't synch an iPad's data unless a full
version is running. Do I read all this right? I've untangled
version conflicts before, and hoped those days were over.</p></div>Sashatag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/233521602013-02-06T23:41:54Z2013-02-06T23:41:54ZSync between devices<div><p>Hi Sasha,</p>
<p>I'm not sure that I'm entirely clear on what you're trying to
do. Moneydance does need to be open to sync the data from the iPads
to it--it doesn't have to be open while you're entering
transactions, but it has to open to read the sync data from the
iPads and write the sync data for any new information entered in
it. Where is the syncing breaking down exactly? And are the two
installations of Moneydance sharing the same data set?</p>

There is one data set, which
I want accessible to any of three devices: the desktop computer and
the two iPads (I plan to retire the laptop if possible). I thought
that using Dropbox, in addition to being y'all's recommended
synching method, would cause MD to behave like my other Dropbox
files, which can be accessed, modified, and replaced by any of the
devices. Actually, what I've described is how I define synching;
all of the devices access the same data set. So I envisioned the
actual data as residing on DB's servers. Am I wrong, then?</p></div>Sashatag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/233521602013-02-07T01:27:30Z2013-02-07T01:27:30ZSync between devices<div><p>Hi Sasha,</p>
<p>There are two different things that are often referred to as
Dropbox syncing, so there may be some confusion there. The first is
sharing one data set between two computers on Dropbox, which it
sounds like you're already doing. The second is using Dropbox
syncing to sync to Apple iDevices--this actually functions
differently from the first thing. It doesn't utilize the entire
data set--the iOS apps don't use the entire data set and only have
a subset of all the data available in your data set--and it
generates transaction changes. So it has a certain amount of
transaction data that comes from Moneydance (which is a date range
that can be specified by going to File -> Syncing), then it
creates encrypted change files that other iOS apps can read and use
and which Moneydance, upon its next launch after the syncing data
has been created, will integrate into the main data set. So the
Apple iDevices don't actually interact directly with the data set
you have stored on Dropbox, but utilize their own data in the
.moneydancesync folder on your Dropbox folder, and require
Moneydance as an intermediary to sync any data you enter on your
iDevices to your main data set.</p>
<p>I hope that clarifies things!</p>
