Just a little update. I see where we can sync multiple PCs together over a shared folder. I just did a testcase and I did not see the change on the secondary pc, so I must be doing something wrong.

Is there a step by step procedure that shows how to do this?

Thanks again

I've been using Moneydance for years and with MD 2018 (I believe) they added the Dropbox sync support. My wife and I use that to sync our accounts between PC and Mac. Try setting up the Dropbox sync approach. That works for us, the transactions change every few seconds as we change them. If we both change the same transaction, the last one to change "wins".

Thanks for the pointer. After I first posted, I found the Dropbox pointer.

There was also a pointer to using a shared folder, and that is closer to

what I ‘d like to do. I attempted to setup a shared folder and my test case

did not show that it worked.

I’m not one big on cloud storage for my data (concerned about hacking). The shared

folder looks interesting. What I now need is a cookbook on the correct steps to

get the 2 PCs to communicate.

Thanks again.

Phil

onlinefile13tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/453843712018-05-30T21:50:35Z2018-05-30T21:50:35ZKeeping multiple PCs in sync.

I am not support staff, just a user.

Just for clarification MD 2018 has not yet been released.

If you purchased 2015 then you are entitled to a free upgrade to 2017. If you purchased an earlier version you can get a 50% discount. Check using upgrading box at https://infinitekind.com/purchase

With 2017 you have three syncing methods available to you, the best method is called Dropbox Folder. To use this you need at least a free Dropbox account with Dropbox client installed on your computers. The next is Dropbox Connection for which you still need a free Dropbox account but to sync you need to be online. The last uses other cloud based shared folders. With the Dropbox options you can also sync to mobile devices such as phones.
Enter a transaction on one device and within 30 seconds see it appear on another device.

When Moneydance uses Dropbox, it uses end to end symmetric AES256 encryption. As used by governments and banks for example. Keys (syncing encryption passphrase) are not held in the cloud, only on your devices. So, if Dropbox was to be hacked they would only get an encrypted set of files.

See http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/syncing-and-sharing-data

You can use 2015, but you must be careful. Unlike 2017 were your data set must be on your hard drive with 2015 you can move your data set to a cloud sheared drive to be opened by different computers. But unlike 2017 you must not open your data set on more than one computer at a time or you could corrupt your data.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/453843712018-05-30T22:17:08Z2018-05-30T22:17:08ZKeeping multiple PCs in sync.

I'm a fellow user.

With the Moneydance 2017 syncing engine a prime requirement is that the shared location must be accessible whenever you are using Moneydance hence the Shared Folder option is mostly used for computers on the same LAN where at all times you have an accessible File Server.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/453843712018-05-30T23:03:50Z2018-05-30T23:03:50ZKeeping multiple PCs in sync.

Thanks for the info.

Just checked and I do have 2017. However I tried the “shared folder”

sync and had some problems. Like in my primary PC I did not get the

option to enter the passcode (or whatever it is called). On my secondary

machine I was able to enter the passcode. I will get back it in maybe tomorrow.

Thanks again.

1st I do have 2017 (my error). I have tried the shared folder option

and had a problem. I think I’m getting an idea of how it is supposed

to work.

Oh yes I am on the same Lan.

I’ll try it again later, maybe tomorrow.

Thanks again.
